Edinburgh transferred their licence to Wembley in 1970 . Was near the end of the seventies before the Monarchs were operating again .

Friggin Spring Trophy as an opener and the Monarchs twice in 3 weeks at Ashfield. Had hoped this shyt would be canned with the re-launch of the Tigers.

More opportunities to stuff them surely.

I know , you would have thought they would have went all out to get a really big opening meeting against an EL club . But alas no , the Big Spring in a daud of plywood against the Smugs

An opener against Edinburgh, chance to take on the PL Champions with a strong 1-7 hotly tipped to have a big season….new era, stadium improvements etc….it is a bit of an open goal that one.

A win/narrow defeat against Edinburgh will leave people wanting more, a dead rubber against Coventry probably wouldn’t.

It might be the case for the diehards, but it is a new promotion trying to attract new fans and drag people back who haven’t been before.

They are going to want to see a meeting where there is a bit of emotion and drama involved, talking points, races that matter.

“Aye it was good on Sunday, we turned them over and the new Number 1 beat their Number 1”.

It might happen another 19 times across the season but first impressions count.

Racing at the end of March even at the best tracks is usually pish with the weather and track being too wet/cold to think about making a pass and riders not wanting to risk it in what is essentially a challenge match.

Big name opposition from the EL would have been just the ticket for the launch meeting, supposing we got a humping, it would be great to see Holder, Iversen etc rather than trundle out the same old 'bragging rights' bull that gets spouted when Edinburgh are due to visit. Supposing we beat them, I really couldn't care, just don't want to see them any more than we have to.

Iversen and Holder are just names to most new fans…

I understand the idea of seeing EL riders….hey, I say this from experience as a Berwick fan….dont dwell on what mistakes you think the promotion are making though. Celebrate the things that they are getting right!

Its a double edged sword really. First meeting things can go any way so there is always the chance that it might not go the way you would want.

As for it being Edinburgh, I think really that almost had to be a given. Its the first meeting of a new era, new facilities, upgraded track, new owners and they have made it clear that they want a big crowd. That immediately limits your choice of opposition, really only Worky - although of late their travelling support has fallen off - or Berwick would be alternatives. From the grand opening and press coverage point of view whether we are sick of seeing the same opposition 7 or 8 times a season or not a fixture against Edinburgh makes good marketing sense.

The only alternative marketing of it to existing fans would have been to make it for a one off trophy in honour of the opening. Two problems with that - we might not win it (and we have enough egg on face from last few seasons) and secondly its not really fair on Edinburgh as we would be asking them to forego a second leg at their home.

Spring trophy was inevitable as the opener really
