stevec
I would hate to be management. You get moaned at if you put together an average team. You bring in an exciting new teenage New Zealander to compliment your team of new and young Brits to reliable experienced ones and that's wrong! John Leslie
Another British lad dropped, very poor Eastbourne Agree. A NL team dropping a British lad to fit in a foreigner....disgraceful from Eastbourne.
berniev123
OK, I will ask the obvious question that no-one else has..........How can he ride in the NL when it is for Brits only and no, repeat no, none Brits allowed. If he has competed in the NZ Nationals and is a New Zealander how is he eligible? Can someone please put my question to bed pretty quick!
Ben91
He's either a Brit and as so eligible for a 3 point average or he's a New Zealander and therefore not eligible to race in the NL full stop.

That's been asked in several other places and no-one seems to have given a definitive answer yet that I have seen, it's just assumed that his parents or grandparents are British hence making him eligible to ride. Though what has been said is he is a 5.00 as he has ridden in state championships (NZ U21s) but not the NZ national championship, whereas essentially if he hadn't have ridden in that meeting(s) he would have been a 3.00. That's my understanding anyway.

No rider will want to ride for Eastbourne if they treat riders like that. Don't confirm your team and then change it right on eve of season, once declared that should be it !
blueherb777
I do not understand 2 things, 1) How come that article about the NZL lad is dated 10 December 2014 and nothing has been said ? 2) I thought it was the `National Development League and not the `International Development League ?
Penny Cross
Whos going to pay for the Eagles style Kevlars hes having made? Not to mention matching bike covers and guards. Doesn't just let down the rider, but sponsors as well. I agree with whoswinnin86. NL is for young Brits, not some Johnny foreigner to get in via a loophole.
Michael Ceglio
ROB BRANDFORD, CAMERON HEEPS, JAY HERNE, LEE HERNE, DAKOTA NORTH, TAYLOR POOLE All the riders have come through the ranks using the so called loop hole in NL. MDL states that only British Passport Holders can ride. (No Loophole) 19.9.2.5 All Riders must hold a UK Passport or have UK Patriality. 19.8.1 Riders new to National League racing will be given an assessed MA of 3.00 19.8.1.1 Riders qualifying by UK Patriality will be given an assessed MA of 5.00 Yes I understand that is disappointing for Brendon but this is speedway other teams have done it in the past, Jim Lynch made a mistake and named a team a few years ago and had to change it at the last minute. I cant wait to see the young Lad race at Arlington and I cant wait for the season to start, I was worried that the team was a bit soft but now I can see that the management have come out with all guns blazing and want to win! bruno
could the problem be thou that in the future he decides to ride for gb which makes him a brit which makes him ok for the nl. just a thought
Islander15
When SCB asked if Brendan was actually one of the most liked speedway riders, I think you only need to look at his tow witter or Facebook today to see that he is. builderbob
Good stuff! Its a real shame for Brendan but if this is true about the NZ guy we could have at least three in the team that could really increase on their starting averages. Team shaping up well in my mind. Just hope it is legit about Wilson-Dean at least five i would say Eastbourne realised they have a poor team but Brendan wouldn't have been top of my list to let go! are you for real
Halifaxtiger
That's been asked in several other places and no-one seems to have given a definitive answer yet that I have seen, it's just assumed that his parents or grandparents are British hence making him eligible to ride. That's my understanding anyway. Alan Jones has already said it but: 19.8.1.1 Riders qualifying by UK Patriality will be given an assessed MA of 5.00 The question remains: Does he have patriality? If he doesn't, he can't ride in the NL. Agree. A NL team dropping a British lad to fit in a foreigner....disgraceful from Eastbourne. According to his website, Brendan Johnson is 22 and has ridden NL speedway for 8 seasons (albeit punctuated by serious injury). Last year, he averaged just over 6.00, so its not unreasonable to say that he is becoming (if he is not already) an NL journeyman. If they had dropped Kelsey Dugard, you'd have far more of a point. I would hate to be management. You get moaned at if you put together an average team. You bring in an exciting new teenage New Zealander to compliment your team of new and young Brits to reliable experienced ones and that's wrong! Fair point. What some still don't seem to grasp is that the stand alone NL teams are a business and rely upon gate receipts to survive. As such, they need to make their team as attractive as possible to paying customers. I met Brendan Johnson last year and he's a smashing lad but I suspect this New Zealander is likely to pull in more people, so its difficult to blame Eastbourne for the change. Ask Mildenhall what Cameron Heeps did for them. are you for real Yes, he is. I'd have dropped Warwick. He's 31, has been around for 13 seasons and has spent most of his riding career in the NL. Further to that, his average is only marginally higher than Johnson's, his been out for a year and, in my experience, Johnson is far more committed. Personally, I'd say its far worse that Eastbourne have dropped Johnson and retained Warwick than they have dropped Johnson nad brought in a New Zealander. Indeed, how many would have complained if Warwick had been dropped for the New Zealander ? Edited January 31, 2015 by Halifaxtiger
Penny Cross
I agree with Halifaxtiger in that they should have dropped Warwick. He gained his average largely from his exceptional home form on IOW. Not so good away.I think his average will drop, as I don't see him as a small track specialist. Johnson however, although slightly below Warwick average wise, would imo, increase his average by around 1pt. Im quite sure he would have been a high scoring and consistent scorer at Arlington. Also exceptional with sponsors and actively works hard to get them and keep them Not at all impressed with Dugards press release. Clearly he hoped the NZ lad would come in on a 3pt average. So why not say so? Poor PR. Sorry Eagles fans, I genuinely believe the wrong rider has been dropped.

Indeed, how many would have complained if Warwick had been dropped for the New Zealander ? It was a tongue in cheek comment really, hence the tone. I just meant, as you've kind of pointed out, if they were going to drop a rider to improve the team (ie sign Bradley rather than a 3.00 man) I thought there are other riders in the team less likely to improve the team than Brendan.
