Peterborough Panthers 2015

Must say I'm not excited by that either..but hope I'm wrong and he's great...Blackbird has a higher average than him and he hasn't been great for us this year..not that I'm knocking him with the crashes he's had.

That rule is written terribly. As it suggests that riders don't drop down on their current EL average converted but there start of the season (or end of last season) average.

and not the only example of poor wording - in fact tgere are many poor/ambiguous ramblings within it IMO.

However Im with the Pussycats on this one!! Clearly the average used should be his current one in this instance and not his start of year figure.

Agreed. The rule is badly written but I think we can all work out what it means.

Speedway rules: written with the intention of being flexible enough for any given situation or request

Peterborough Panthers have swooped to sign Swedish star Jacob Thorssell this morning (June 30).

The city club have persuaded the former World Under 21 finalist to race in the Premier League for the first time in his career.

Thorssell (21) is a standing dish at Elite League level where he is currently enjoying a fourth successive season with parent club Wolverhampton.

And Panthers supremo  Ged Rathbone is convinced he has pulled off a major coup by attracting Thorssell to the second tier.

Rathbone said: “This is a signing that ticks all the boxes. Jacob jumped at the chance to become a Peterborough rider and comes in within budget and within the points limit.

“It is a real coup for the club and I hope the fans are as excited about the arrival of Jacob as I am.

“He is a very highly-rated rider with lots of top-level experience both in this country and his homeland. He expects to do very well in the Premier League . . . and that is exactly what we expect of him.

“The league – and plenty of the tracks – will be new to him, but that is not a concern.

“He will suss things out very quickly and he will also make starts which is something we have not been doing lately.”

The capture of Thorssell completes a painstaking search for a replacement for Olly Allen, who suffered season-ending ankle injuries in a March smash.

Panthers have successfully called on guests to fill the void left by Allen, but that is no longer possible due to him dropping from the top of the club’s averages for July.

Skipper Ulrich Ostergaard takes over at the top of the order with Thorssell slotting into the main body on a mark of 7.42.

He is set to make his debut when Panthers entertain bottom side Redcar at the East of England Showground on Sunday (July 5, 3pm).

Rathbone added: “We have said all along that we would make the right signing at the right time – and hopefully we have done that.

“We felt we needed to react after losing twice at home lately and hopefully this move shows our ambition to reach the play-offs and challenge for the title.”

Peterborough Panthers line-up with averages: Ulrich Ostergaard 8.63, Jacob Thorsell 7.42, Robert Lambert 7.26, Lewis Blackbird 6.85, Michael Palm Toft 5.39, Simon Lambert 5.04, Rafal Konopka 3.00.

he will get swallowed up by the pl guys. as we all know, the pl is stronger than the lite league. cats just got weaker. :o

Kenneth Hanson came into the pl on a converted el average of 7.70 and found it a bit tougher than he thought. now averaging around 5.00.

still when tortoise shell gets his proper average, maybe 4.50. Peterborough can get rid of the B.S.A. boy and replace him with a.n. other. by that time the league will be lost.

Yes he'll find riding in the PL much tougher than riding as a heat leader in the EL (like he was at the start of 2015) against the likes of Doyle, Iversen, Holder, Janowski, Harris, Andersen, Bjerre, Batchelor. Gimme a break!?!?!?

I agree that the gap between the PL and EL is closing, largely due to the draft system (which is not a bad thing) but it is still there. I do think the 60% ratio needs looking at though. That or the PL needs to get in line and have draft system too - you know to avoid any further Greenwood/Konopka debacles.

Back to Jacob, IMO he's not quite ready to be a heat leader at EL level YET (but he will be) but he is a better than average 2nd string. He rides fast tracks like Lynn well and so i think he'll be a decent addition to Panthers and one who I look forward to seeing.

Who else would Panthers fans have wanted?

Shaun the whole rule book is badly written.

Cant believe your all underwhelmed with Thorssell. Cracking signing.

The Panthers supporters are not, it's just the odd one from Rye House that seems dissapointed.

And Panthers supremo  Ged Rathbone

At least the website has gone sensible. A local journo off the leash in a minor local comic is a dangerous thing. Ged doesn't deserve that!

I'm sure that MP is glad that his rockets supremo friend keeps publicising his work or else we'd miss it :D

The way I read the rule was that anyone with a starting average of over 6 was ineligible to get a converted PL average for the whole season. I think this is all related to the rule that you had to have an EL average from previous season to be eligible to double up/down (ie why Lambert was barred from joining Newcastle last year).

I agree that common sense dictates thorsell should be available to ride, but with the ridiculous riding system in EL nowadays this can lead to averages becoming totally unrealistic depending on if you are in top 3 or not (hence easy/hard rides).

Anyway - good luck to him, I think he will find PL a bit tougher than expected

Most Panthers have been calling for their promotion to make a signing to cover Allen, they have done so. Maybe Thorsell will prove to be a cracking signing, maybe he wont, but surely he deserves a chance at least.

A couple of don't knows on the BSF is hardly representative of the fan base. Any rider signed gets a chance. It's what happens from then that matters.
