Kent Curfew

The noise situation is a farce. The bikes are running for 20 minutes and there are not enough people at most meetings to whip up a storm. There is significantly more noise at most football matches. I remember Romford having to close because one resident complained. Why are we such a nation of kill-joys?.

A 10-4 margin against changing the time curfew is pretty conclusive. My 'grapevine' tells me that there may well be concerns in regard to the future of the club...let's hope not.

A factor in all these council hearings is HOW MANY ACTUAL LOCAL PEOPLE attend the meetings? Their opinions are the ones that councillors have to accept - not those of people who come from outside the catchment area for where the track is situated. Harsh but very true.

It all reminds me of the closure of Hastings in 1949 which went to High Court because the 11 (or may be 13 people( who objected on noise grounds all owned property in close proximity to the Pilot Field.

The views of travelling supporters sadly do not count at the end of the day.

For all that, I am astounded and most disappointed at this possible blow to the long-term future of Kent Kings. Like others I eagerly await the view of the club on this matter.

I feel sorry for Roger Cearns and all the work, effort, finance etc to get this project off the ground.

The future of Kent Kings has got to be in doubt because of this poor decision.

So much for the Leader of the Council saying the things he did - a lot of good that was ?

With regards Kent and its current curfew, it definately needs to be changed from its current stringent timescale, I understand they have to tie in with the greyhounds, but that shouldnt be too difficult as Mr Cearns runs the Greyhounds and The Speedway. We have a Council who are happy to allow 2 1/2 to 3 hours of Speedway per week, however they are not happy to have it run past 20-30hrs mid week, they are also content to have Speedway run on Bank Holiday Monday afternoons. The solution is staring everyone in the face, but does not seem to have been debated, Saturday Morning racing or Sunday Daytime racing either it seems to me would be allowable by the Council, there is NO difference between that and Bank Holidays, and i think the planning Committee would probably be more in favour of that than the current weekday meetings, and i think they would find it almost impossible to object to weekend Speedway, and at the same time allow Bank Holiday Speedway. So Mr Cearns, Len Silver, Weekend racing at Kent is the way to go, and if it clashes with Rye House, then thats tough...

That's a very good point.

Sunday afternoon would be the shout and still have the Monday Bank Holidays.

I know they have Greyhounds on Sunday - but which would get the bigger crowds ? Speedway by a mile.

The greyhounds may have been too long established for a change of this nature. And what would the overall financial difference be? I asume, as happens at most greyhound stadiums, that the trackside bookmakers pay substantial "ground rent" to be there.

Sittingbourne also need to "keep sweet" they greyhound public in view of the other meetings on Thursday and Saturday. They may object to the loss of Sunday race meetings and show their displeasure by boycotting the other two days. A tricky one to solve there.

As an idea though, Sunday afternoon speedway has its merits.

So with kent considering their future, eastbourne looking like having no future and all the uncertainty surrounding rye house. These are very bleak times for speedway fans in the south east.

Yes it is not looking very rosey.

I do see the signs of mega-problems ahead. I worked in speedway through from late 1952 for the next 10 years. The years between 1955 and 1958 were especially critical but the sport had visionaries like Ronnie Greene, Charles Ochiltree, Charlie Knott and Johnnie Hoskins to guide it through. Who are the men of that calibre these days?

Nonsense!

The stadiums in the middle of an industrial estate!

You can't even see any houses anywhere near the stadium!

Sad indictment of our not so Great Britain!

It's not a question of where a stadium is but how far noise travels and its sound levels.

Seems odd how the commitee were allowed to vote on something that ultimately the commitee were confused what the applicant was asking for.

Perhaps this should make an appeal easier to plan.

Simple one liners in the next application.

"I want an extension to the curfew"

Look on Google Earth..there's a large housing estate about 150 yards to the south of the stadium.

I can't seem to get into Google Earth martin_1 but that nearby estate you mention (150 yards away from the stadium) will add support to the protestors cause unfortunately.
