Any "veterans" on here see James Bond ride? Did he have a smooth style and enjoy a post meeting martini?

BOBBATH
Yes of course I remember James Bond and indeed saw him ride. I always associate him with guys like Cyril Francis, Tommy Sweetman, and Pete Jarman (RIP). James was never a heat leader but one of those guys who was the backbone of speedway and always gave it his all. Wolverhampton were always a great team to watch-hope he is still enjoying life and thanks to him for giving us fans a lot of pleasure. I think he just crumbled! There was Arne Pander, Colin Goody for Oxford Cheetahs...so called because those devils from up the A420 were always cheating! The Swedes Fundin, Michanek, Sjosten, Nordin, Nygren, Jansson, Harryson, Persson were superb riders, most of them rode at The Abbey against a GB side that included local Robins Ashby, Broady, The Boococks, Betts, and kiwis Briggo and Mauger in a test series in '68, won 2-1 by Sweden. The Marlborough flyer Crash was GB's top scorer in that series.12,000 packed into Blunsdon that Saturday night. Good times. I was at one test around 80/81 when Robin Stevie Bastable top-scored for GB as they beat the Yanks at Blunsdon. Don't remember the crowd being that big. Do remember some Brits with star-spangled banners supporting the USA!

moxey63
My all-time fave is Paul Tyrer, ex-Belle Vue, then Peter Collins... lots of riders I like, not all with Belle Vue links either. I find the likes of Garry Middleton, Kenny Carter, Steve Gresham, characters etc, really interesting... and the riding styles of Carl Glover, Richard Hellsen and many more, really eye-catching. To be honest, the bread-and-butter riders make my list more than any superstars on it... But I'd rather read the life story of a rider who struggled to make it in the sport rather than, say, someone like Jason Crump, who I admire. Pinny
Favorite Newport riders from the years i attended (1999-2011) Wato Henriksson Ben howe Gjedde Frank smart Emil lindqvist N k iversen Visitors id always look forward to seeing: Stonehewer Michael coles in his prime Paul pickering Danny bird Frede schott Peter I Karlsson Topinka Zagar Harris Not a great list but those are the standouts for me. Gjedde pure class for the wasps never have i seen a more dominant rider don the number one jacket for newport and that includes wato in 1999. Gjedde was absolutely quality to watch
EnglishRoundabout
Tommy Jansson always crops up on your list Sidders. What was it you liked about him? Yerropes earlier mentioned Ed Stangeland. I I seem to recall him being signed mid season around 75. It was a dire season from memory, but Ed seemed to brighten things up with his blasts around bends three and four. 'Norm the storm Hunter' also joined the Robins around that time and provided some entertainment too with his unusual style, left leg leading as he entered the bends. Good times, awful Swindon teams though!
stratton
Tommy Jansson i first see him ride in a test match at the Abbey for Sweden against New Zealand in 1973.For me he would of been a force with PC up until the eighties.A great riding style a great temperament great aquipment he had everything he beat Crash for the helmet and also beat Jessup .I thought at the time PC,Jansson,or Crump( on his Streety machine) could break the monopoly of the great brigade Mauger,Olsen,Michanek, but it wasn't to be i actually think Jansson would of had a squeak in the 76 katowice final.
