IMPORTANT BANK HOLIDAY CLASH FOR SCORPIONS

 

FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions head into their clash with the Redcar Bears at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Bank Holiday Monday (3pm), knowing that a victory will help consolidate their current place within the top six of the Premier League table.

 

It forms a 30-heat feast of speedway, with the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Stags also entertaining the Buxton Hitmen in National League action.

 

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We need to bang in a result and take three points off the Bears – it’s as simple as that.

 

“With the cut-off deadline for the championship play-offs approaching, it’s all about us getting the points on the board.

 

“We will not under-estimate Redcar, who won here in a League Cup fixture at the start of the season. However, I feel if we perform as we know we are capable at the Eddie Wright Raceway, we can take the Premier League points on offer.”

 

With Scunthorpe’s last home meeting against Sheffield disturbed halfway through by rain, Monday will mark Josh Auty’s full return from appendicitis.

 

Auty looked extremely sharp in his two outings against the Tigers, passing Simon Stead in fine style on his way to an unbeaten 5 paid 6.

 

“Josh looked so fast”, commented Godfrey. “It’s why we signed him on a full contract earlier this season. He is such a quality rider, and it’s a big boost to have him back in our line-up.”

 

The Scunthorpe Stags will be looking for a positive result against Buxton, the team immediately above them at the bottom of the National League table. Both sides are packed with potential stars of the future and a great match could be on the cards.

 

The Stags are boosted by the news that Danno Verge did not suffer a broken foot at King’s Lynn on Wednesday night as first feared.

 

Verge escaped with bad bruising and nerve damage after a freak accident in the King’s Lynn pits, which saw him catch his foot on an uneven piece of concrete.

 

Monday’s adult admission price for the double-header is £17. It’s just £2 more than a single Premier League meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway, for 15 extra heats of action.

 

The circuit rightfully has won the award, several times, for being the best racetrack in the Premier League, so a full and exciting day of racing is ahead.

With Nicolai Klindt braking his scaphoid riding in Denmark, I think scunny should go RR for this meeting. I am not sure what Nicolai's recovery time will be but I guess scunny might have to find a replacement, possibly a double change is needed if scunny are going to stand a chance of winning the play offs.

Doesn't seem much forum interest in this match but read on the Leicester website that Klindt is hoping to ride for Scunthorpe and also if time prevails the later Leicester/Coventry match but it might not matter as the weather outlook looks appalling with heavy showers forecast which is annoying as the regular Friday night racenight was perfect for racing.

If they ever get some decent weather Scunthorpe should qualify for the play offs but how much longer can they carry Matt Williamson in the side to mount a serious challenge

HOME MEETING AGAINST REDCAR STARTS MASSIVE WEEK FOR SCORPIONS

 

IT’S A MAKE-OR-BREAK WEEK for the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, with every Premier League meeting taking on the importance of a cup final – starting with the visit of the Redcar Bears to the Eddie Wright Raceway on Wednesday evening (7.30pm).

 

With the Scorpions currently in a precarious sixth place in the Premier League table - the last qualifying position for the championship play-offs - the team are involved in four meetings in five days against the two teams snapping at their heels!

 

The Scorpions’ schedule for this week is:

Wednesday August 27th (7.30pm) – Home vs Redcar

Thursday August 28th (7.30pm) – Away vs Redcar

Saturday August 30th (8.30pm approx. – second half) – Away vs Workington

Sunday August 31st (3pm) – Home vs Workington

 

Somerset, Edinburgh, Ipswich and Berwick have all safely qualified for the play-offs.

 

Newcastle sit in fifth place with 33 points, with 26 out of 28 Premier League meetings completed.

 

Then come the sixth-placed Scorpions with 31 points from 18 meetings. Redcar are seventh with 28 points from 23 meetings, while Workington are ninth with only 21 points, but have a large number of meetings in hand, with 13 meetings staged and 15 to be raced before the play-off cut-off date of September 14th.

 

The mathematics are complicated with so many meetings still to be staged, but one thing is certain – the Scorpions can’t afford to slip up at home to the teams chasing them in the table.

 

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “This is the most important week of the season for us so far. In particular, the two home meetings are absolutely massive.

 

“We can’t afford either Redcar or Workington leaving here with a win.

 

“Earlier on in the season, we’d done more fixtures than anyone else, and it was up for everyone else to catch us. The boot is now on the other foot. We’ve got meetings in hand on most other teams and it’s up to us to win those – especially the home meetings.”

 

Redcar’s visit to the Eddie Wright Raceway on Wednesday is a clash re-arranged from Bank Holiday Monday, when it was rained off. Wednesday evening has been selected as the new date, due to the favourable forecast on that night.

 

The Scorpions will be without No 1 Nicolai Klindt, who is in action in Denmark.

 

Godfrey explains: “Our fixture on Wednesday is a re-arranged fixture, which means we have a facility to cover for Nicolai. We will be using rider replacement in his absence, with everyone able to take a ride for him.

 

“Nicolai injured his scaphoid in Denmark last week, but it seems he’s OK riding with it. We’ll see how he goes in Denmark on Wednesday. As long as he’s fine after that, he’ll be joining us at Redcar on Thursday.

 

“Rider replacement at home to Redcar should work well. Thomas Jorgensen is now fitting fit again after the illness that struck him earlier in the month, and everyone could see how sharp Josh Auty looked in his two rides, before the Sheffield meeting was called off.

 

“Josh has come back from his enforced break due to appendicitis in good shape. He’s looking more relaxed and happier.

 

“We realise that Redcar are going to come all guns blazing at us on Wednesday, they need to beat us home and away. We won’t under-estimate them and we need our fans in good voice behind us. This is like a cup final for us. We must win this meeting”, Godfrey concluded.

Close scoreline but distinctly average racing by the high standards of the EWR. As Rob said the track was as slick as it's been for a long time, not by design, apparently.

 

The Scorps missed Klindt and would have edged all three league points with him in the line-up IMHO.

Yes, until heat 15 came along this meeting was a bit of a let down with all the recent lack of inactivity but credit to Redcar who deserved a point from this meeting and who knows with the falls to Graversen and Wilkinson while in scoring positions and gifted Howe 2 extra points while at the back could have been all 3, if Scunthorpe are to make any progress in the play offs then a replacement for Matt Williamson has to be found asap as he is still unfortunately way off pace and never looked like scoring any points.
