Race For The Play Offs 2014

Recommended Posts

I hate play-offs. In any sport, the team that finishes top of their league are league champions. How can it be justified that a team finishing 4th. in a league can end up being crowned Champions?.

Too true, I thought I was the only one against the idea. Seems there a few more out there who think the same.

I hope Swindon wins the playoffs but do agree with your and GWR123s comments

Most of us oldies I would expect. I have the same gripe about the GP's. Why have a final when the winner need not be the rider with the most points in the meeting?. A rider can score 9 points from 5 heats, come 2nd, in his semi then win the final to win the GP on 14 points drom 6 rides. Another rider can win all his heats, come third in his semi so not make the top 3 even thogh he has 16 points. The World Champio is decided on points scored not "Finals" won...let's go back to the 20 heat formula which was always good enough for world Finals.

It's justified because it brings in a hell of a lot of money. Every promoter and riders love the play off's as it's a financial bonus. I would not think there was one promoter or rider that would not like the play off's.

Remember this is a business first and a sport second.

Poole smashed Lynn at Lynn. Yet Lynn have had to quite narrow losses at Poole. Yet they have smashed Coventry at home twice but one of them times Coventry had two 3 pointers in the 1-5.

Personally, If I was Lynn or Coventry, I'd leave Poole to take out Swindon. I think they're the team with the best chance of beating Swindon on aggregate.

I think that covers things ... Swindon have been poor at Poole this season . of course the big think who Poole got line up to guest if you take Woffy out then it's Zagar ,,, after that it's Watt Cook ,Nicholls etc .

Not many sports actually have that system anymore most have a playoff system to determine the champions. Some give a league shield to the team finishing top, maybe EL could do that?

I could have heard the howls from Manchester all the way to here had Liverpool won the title via a play-off!. I know football have play-offs to decide promotion which I am totally against...Finish 6th. in the Championship and go up, finish 3rd. and stay down. No thanks!. The EL has 9 teams (should be 10) and it's possible to finish 4th. and be crowned Champions. I know I'm a "dyed in the wool" old-time fan but for me Speedway worked perfectly well before all the changes.

I have always said if my team finished top of the league and failed to win the play offs i would personally buy the club a trophy to mark it, nothing to stop anyone else doing that or a bunch of fans clubbing together to get a really nice sized cup to present to their club, i am sure a picture could even be placed in the star and whilst the cup would be completely unofficial i bet there is nothing in the rule book that says you cannot do this.

There should be something to show for coming top of the league, even if the majority of matches this season have effectively been select sides playing each other.

This is an open challenge to fans of either Kings Lynn or Poole (which ever one finishes top) if you subsequently do not win the play offs, get your supporters club to arrange for collection so that a trophy maybe purchased and engraved marking the fact you finished top of the league and make it public so fans from other clubs are aware of it and this can then be made a seasonal tradition, does not matter what sky or the bspa think about this, its an unofficial but merited trophy, nothing they can do about it.

The challenge has been made, will you accept it?

As a football fan of many years, most spent in the championship and lower divisions then I say the promotion play offs have been the best thing ever introduced into football..many a season I've spent watching teams go through the motions in the second half the season and me thinking what is the point of even being there.now even teams near the drop zone still have hopes of the play offs and some have made it from there....football is far far better with the play offs ..meaningful games all season which never used to happen

I think there is nothing wrong with the play offs in speedway either...the problem is speedway teams today are too riddled with guests and it is highly likely that the teams you watch in the play offs bear little resemblance to the team that did most of the season or even finished the season ...that can be a farce and take a lot of shine off the event.....in principle it's the best way of deciding it in my opinion but it doesn't always work out like that due to the make up of the tems taking part

Also I much prefer the GP to the old one off world final which was great in its day but by the end was a shadow of its old self and had seen better days...the line ups were not great if you look back...riders were out of contention after 2 rides and could give up the ghost a bit...I've been to many world finals and in their heyday they were great but they had finished in my book and times move on and the GP system is far better now I would say

Well i did say I was "dyed in the wool" and a boring old fart who pines for the old days. I fully accept a lot of what you say and helping to avoid meaningless meetings/matches has to be good. We all want to see teams/riders striving all season, in whatever sport. I just can't shake off the conviction that 1st. means 1st. or in football terms, 3rd. means promotion not 6th.. Thanks though for your well-reasoned arguement.

Isn't the GP system more like a league system where the best, more consistent rider wins over the course of the season.

But you think the play-offs are ok,which is more like the old world finals(which you no longer like) where pretty much anyone can win if it is their night

They used to do that. It failed. It failed so badly people forget they have the EL Champions and then have the play-off afterwards for the Craven Shield.

Before my time mate

- the Craven shield as far as I recall was some rubbishe affair with 3 teams playing round robin KO speedway.... and was dreadful...

The Craven Shield was the play-offs. Obviously once we have the play-offs for the league title it had to change to something else so they come up with a squashed in at the end of the season 3TT.
