I think this because they don't need to work to get to the top.

Its like this with the most talented sportsmen, be it George Best, Alex Higgins, Micheal Lee or Darcy. Where you get riders like say Nicki Pedersen who is not the most naturally gifted rider ever but has made up for that with hard work and determination, he obviously knows how much hard work it has taken to get him to the top and how much it takes to stay there.

Thats absolute rubbish. On one hand you've said one thing, and on another you've said something else. It doesn't matter how naturally gifted you are in any choosen sport, you still have to work very hard to get to the top. NOTHING is given to you on a plate..

Was mauger more naturally gifted than collins?

Nielsen more naturally gifted than lee and k moran?

is hancock more gifted than gollob?

was briggo one of the top five most naturally gifted riders of all time?

Im sure all top riders work hard, but some are clearly more professional and work hsrder than others.

Its a valid point.

you won't be a world champ withour both tslent, professionalism and hard work. So far starry which aspect would u say ward is lacking in?

So you're saying these flawed talents are working as hard as some of the others? George Best was in training every day, eating the right foods, avoiding alcohol and in bed early before the next days game? Alex Higgins and Jimmy White were dedicated to practicing hours on end every day? Mike Lee and Darcy were in the gym all the time, eating the right foods and avoiding drugs and alcohol?

There are many a lesser rider/player who has done everything possible to maximise their talents through hard work and good living and got nowhere near the level of these examples who have not worked as hard which proves that with the sublime talent that some have will still get them to the top of their sport over less talented hard working riders/players, and if they had been dedicated they may have gone further still.

Depends on the dedication of the person, how far they want to go. As for the above, they would have had to work hard to get where they were in the first place. Save for serious injury The rest is up to them.

Agreed sommelier. And it took him years of dedication to reach the top. He wasn't by any means a "natural". When he first came to England as a 17 year old he was, to put it bluntly, a flop. But he went away, worked hard and dedicated himself to the sport. He came back when he was ready, worked even harder, and we all know the end of that story.

Without getting too boring on the subject, could I add that Tom Farndon too dedicated himself to the sport. He was probably the first rider to take physical fitness seriously with regular training, was tee-total and didn't smoke. He too wasn't a natural but it was his dedication and hard work that paid off.

Isn't always the case that the people blessed with all the talent are the ones who seem least well equipped to deal with , just look at people like George Best or Alex Higgins and a few more that we could mention across may walks of life

It's not always the case. Did Hans Nielsen or Erik Gundersen go off the rails at any point? Did they even need any mentoring?

I have to be honest with you Norbold, dont know that much about Farndon. I started going to Wolverhampton in the late 60s. Norman Hunter was my hero then! When Olsen came to wolves was amazing, The epic races between Olsen & Mauger around Monmore were memorable.

West Ham's loss was Wolves' gain I feel. Norman was always good value.

Everybody is blessed or cursed with different personalities though. Some may need mentoring - others not.

Was just thinking today that they could do remakes of 2 classic films with Darcy in the leading role in both, but as a deaf mute to save him struggling to learn his lines.

No 1 A clockwork Orange, with Darcy playing Alex

No 2 Quadrophenia with Darcy starring as Jimmy.

Can you think of any other films he could be in. Placed him as a Mod in Quadrophenia because I can't see him as a rocker in dirty old tee shirts and leather jacket covered in studs, more the Mod with his Italian designer suit on.

Both Alex and Jimmy are thugs that had gone off the rails so I think he would be able to play both parts with no problems..
