They earn a living paid for by supporters going through the turnstiles and the least supporters should be allowed to do is voice their opinion. If the riders don't like it, don't read the forum. Higher profile sportspeople receive criticism in a far wider range of ways and the measure of them is how they deal with it. Nothing is different with a speedway rider. The reality is that six of the riders in this season's line up have been Rockets before and all bar one (Kennett) have fallen short in their last spells with the club respectively. They are on the averages they are on for a reason. Riders and managers get an easy ride compared to most other sports, especially football. I don't buy the argument that footballers earn so much more money, so it's ok to give them abuse, I've heard players abused playing at a very low level, on comparative money to speedway riders. Forums like this are a medium to vent frustration. I've fallen out with people (the Rye House promoter being one) because I've had the temerity to portray their favourite riders, or team, in a less than positive light. Silver even went to the local rag to have a pop at me and a few others who'd rightly critisized poor performances on here and on Twitter. Another aspect in which speedway differs from top level football is the way you can interact with the riders. The way that some people attach themselves to a particular rider even though he doesn't race for their side has always baffled me. I suppose discovering speedway comapritively late in my early to mid 20's I've a football mentality, everyone else is the enemy. I probably differ from the majority of speedway supporters in that I'm not a particularly massive speedway fan, I'm a Rye House fan, I want to see them win, not particularly bothered how they do it. Just because you moan about your riders/team doesn't make you any less of a supporter than those who think they're beyond criticism. I've earned the right to critisize, spending thousands of pounds of my hard earned following my team up and down the country. I certainly wouldn't have the bottle to do what they do. Just seems to be perhaps a little weak. So, Stummo has decided no more negative posts. I do enjoy my Saturday night visits to Rye, just frustrated at Len. But......the positives. They all know they'll be paid on time. They'll have a freebie skiing and bonding trip A well run club Good supporters at heart And finally they could just prove me wrong and have a good season. Let's hope so! Looking at his results on speedwayresults.com - started out superbly, but tailed off at the end of the season, definitely has the ability Eddie should be superb, like last season & the rest should increase their averages. I think once Bunyan left, the team were more positive, and the end of season performances improved We have two of the best reserves, and when Luke got his mojo back, was exceptional towards the end of season Not sure about the Dane, but the rest are great racers - so plenty of entertainment Hoping for a top 6, then anything can happen - Can't wait 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Other than comments from Bunyan and Possibly Mellgren what trouble was that? Riders time and time again agree that the amount of dirt at Rye House is a difficult question given the tight bends, current bike set ups, silencers,lay down engines and a loss of track width due to the air fence. Poor more dirt down for 2015 let's see how many NL riders manage to turn the bikes. No Len Silver doesn't get everything right, far from it but given his track record of Promoting at more venues than I can remember, multiple league titles, Manager of the National Team when speedway was at its height and responsible for being entrusted with the track prep at Wembley for the biggest meetings around, what does he know But of course the Forum experts know so much more about track prep. Of course Rye can finish in the top six. With a good team spirit, the crowd behind them, and the track prepared the way the riders want it. Why not? If this team go out and give it their all and provide close entertaining racing then they will be a top team no matter where they finish in the league. You need a decent number one which Kennett can be. You need another two decent heat leaders which we may have in Garrity and Nelson or Boxall What we do have is a team that will rely on natural progression, experience, and decent equipment. If all of those things come good we could have a decent season. Too many ifs and buts for my liking but December is a little bit early to be condemning them to another poor season. Len Silver has already assembled a revamped Rockets team that he is determined will be more successful than last season’s Premier League cellar dwellers. The club’s second side, the Raiders, is also set to be re-born at a National League level, with Silver’s son, former England international Andrew Silver, taking his first step into management as the man at the helm of that squad. Now, news has followed that Silver’s long-serving co-promoter, Hazal Naylor, has decided not to continue in that role, citing the growing demands of her parallel role within the expanding Silver Ski Holidays business. She herself says, “I have enjoyed my many years of involvement with Speedway, supporting Len behind the scenes and ensuring that the club never got into difficulties. But my ever increasing work load for Silver Ski, as that company continues to expand, has made it impossible to continue. It was a hard decision to take, and I will really miss my involvement with our team.” Silver has been quick to pay tribute to Naylor for her reputation as one of the sport’s most astute administrators; one renowned for ensuring all riders have been paid on time and keeping Rye House debt-free, sometimes during difficult times. He has gone on to admit that “This decision has realistically been coming for the last two years, so it is not really a surprise to me…. but it does not alter the fact that I will miss Hazal's support immensely. Fortunately we work closely together in Silver Ski, so she will always be there to help if needed. “It goes without saying how grateful I am to her for the many years of hard work she has put into Speedway." Dave Stummings Posted December 15, 2014 Report Share Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) Isn't that the team managers job?Funny, I can imagine the phone call If she was taking to the referee at Rye House it would be something like"If you want to be paid don't exclude any Rockets riders" The Supporters Club I couldn't agree more with that. OK, the days of dinner dancers and discos are perhaps a thing of the past, but it could be the start of a trusting relationship between management and supporters. I mean having a raffle draw after heat 1. Alright perhaps that's not quite the case but it should be done during the interval. Currently the 50-50 draw rakes in I would say about £70 a week. I'd prefer to see that money go into a pot for perhaps riders tyres or dop and oil. I don't buy raffle tickets currently coz I don't exactly know where that money actually goes. Most other clubs have people going round selling them before & during the meetings. As far as I know the only place they're sold now is at the entrance with the programmes. Supporters club was disbanded in the early 2000's amidst rumours of financial impropriety, not sure how much truth there is in that. I've had experience with the Berwick supporters club, which is well run. They organise subsidised away coach trips and an end of season presentation which are always well supported. I don't think you'd get as much of an enthusiastic response from Rye fans though. The days of Jan & Dave Longman organising the fantastic Rockets tours are long gone.
