CRACKING LOCAL DERBY SET FOR EDDIE WRIGHT RACEWAY

FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions face a stern test, with the visit of a revamped Sheffield Tigers side in a Premier League fixture at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm).

It’s the sixth clash between the two local rivals in 2014. Scunthorpe have won all three meetings at Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium, while it stands at one apiece at the Eddie Wright Raceway.

Looking at league meetings alone, the Scorpions have a remarkable run against their local rivals, having won every PL encounter home and away against the Tigers since 2012 – a run of seven meetings.

Sheffield are currently located at the wrong end of the Premier League table, but have recently bolstered their side with the signings of former Scorpion Ben Wilson and Argentinian Nico Covatti.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “Sheffield do look a slightly different proposition now that they have both Ben Wilson & Nico Covatti in their team.

“The Tigers have a number of riders who go well around the Eddie Wright Raceway, and we won’t under-estimate them. We’re expecting a contest and a battle for the points.

“With the likes of Simon Stead riding for them, you know it’s not going to be easy. He’s the sort of rider who could go through the card, although last time he was here, Nicolai Klindt came out on top in their clashes.

“It’s a meeting that is likely to be hard-fought and contain some fabulous racing. Sheffield will be determined to get one over on us, but we’ll be equally determined not to let that happen.

“We’d love to beat Sheffield again, to make it four wins out of four over the Tigers in the Premier League this season, and keep the local bragging rights at Scunthorpe.

“We’ve been firing at home recently, and we need to put in another performance along the same lines to ensure we take all three points on Friday.”

Josh Auty will make his return from his appendicitis on Friday. He was actually due to return last weekend, but both Scorpions’ meetings fell to the weather. Auty has now had a further week to recover.

Meanwhile, all-time leading club points’ scorer David Howe will make his first-ever appearance at reserve around the Eddie Wright Raceway. The 32-year-old is expected to move back into the main body of the team in September, but could provide a real trump card for the Scorpions in the three weeks ahead.

SCORPIONS BACK TO FULL STRENGTH FOR LOCAL DERBY

FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions are set to track their full 1-to-7 for the first time in over a month, when they tackle local rivals Sheffield Tigers in Premier League action at the Eddie Wright Raceway tonight (Friday, 7.30pm).

Dane Thomas Jorgensen, who would have missed last weekend’s rained off meetings at Scunthorpe and Workington due to a chest infection, should be fit to take his place, while recent appendicitis victim Josh Auty will ride for the Scorpions for the first time since Sheffield were last in town on July 9th.

With last night’s Sheffield vs Edinburgh match falling to the weather, tonight is the first chance for Sheffield fans to see new signing, Argentinean Nico Covatti, in action for the Tigers.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “I think we’re in for a terrific match tonight. Sheffield No 1 Simon Stead flies around here, and the clashes between him and our lads will be worth the admission money alone.

“We’re hoping that the Tigers’ fans will make the short journey up to the Eddie Wright Raceway. It’s their first chance to see Nico Covatti riding for them.

“For the first team in a few weeks, the weather looks favourable for us, so it should be all systems go for a cracking local derby.”

Admission prices for tonight:

Adult: £15.00

Student/OAP: £13.00

Child (10 – 17): £5.00

Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult)

Family Ticket £35 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17)

Match Programme: £1.00

Expected teams for tonight:

FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Nicolai Klindt, 2. Thomas Jørgensen, 3. Ashley Birks, 4. Josh Auty, 5. Ryan Douglas, 6. Matt Williamson, 7. David Howe.

Sheffield Tigers: 1. Simon Stead, 2. Ben Wilson, 3. Mark Lemon (guest), 4. Andre Compton R/R, 5. Nico Covatti, 6. Liam Carr (guest), 7. Taylor Poole.

Yep, I'll wait to see new signing Nico Covatti at Sheffield - sounds like that the M180 will be closed from 8.00pm onwards westbound... shouldn't be allowed!

Thankfully the closure of the M180 tonight is now not going to happen:

Another wash out but ironically a few miles down the road no rain whatsoever, very little interest on this forum for this match and very little interest at trackside with size of crowd for a local derby,

Well done to Nico Covatti for at least having a good go!!shame so of his team mates last night didnt have the same attitude

Can you really blame anyone for not wanting to ride in those conditions? The track was pretty heavy at the start of the meeting, after light drizzle in heat 7 the riders were struggling and going very near the fence, then the heavier stuff came and on the first bend where we were the track looked totally saturated and like a skating rink round the inside line. As a Sheffield fan (who was totally wet through due to lack of cover) of course I would say that the correct decision was made as it gives us another chance, but this was pretty obvious wasn't it or do we now ride to get a result at all costs ??? The way Thomas Jorgensen passed Nico Covatti in Heat 8, the track was still fine.

Had things been pushed forward at that stage, the meeting would have reached Heat 10 before the really heavy stuff came down.

All the best
