Wolves Vs Oxford Vs Birmingham Vs Cradley (retro Fours)

Recommended Posts

Yeah.

4 fake teams with absolutely nothing to do with the so called teams they are 'representing'.

Actually, Birmingham could pass.

This sort of meeting is ok in a riders testimonial as that's just about raising a bit of money for the rider.. but to run it as an actual meeting is scraping the barrel somewhat. The £10 entrance might garner enough interest to make it a viable meeting, relying on a lot of support from the other teams though as can't see many Wolves fans showing up... Even the Cradley team doesn't contain a Cradley rider so not likely many of them will be in attendance either, not with them racing at home the next night.

CHEETAHS BACK... FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!

OXFORD Cheetahs make their first full appearance for three years tonight (Monday, 7.30pm), in a one-off Retro Fours competition at Wolverhampton’s Monmore Green stadium.

The Cheetahs last staged speedway at Oxford Stadium in Sandy Lane, Blackbird Leys in October 2007.

The fight to save the stadium continues, but in the meantime, there’s a rare chance to see a team representing Oxford in action.

Wolverhampton, Cradley and Birmingham form tonight’s opposition for the Cheetahs. Birmingham fans' recently suffered the heartache of their Elite League team closing down mid-season.

The Cheetahs will be led by 32-year-old Englishman David Howe, who rode for Oxford in 2006, their penultimate season. The former British Under-21 Champion currently rides for the Scunthorpe Scorpions in the Premier League, and is a former Grand Prix wildcard at Cardiff.

The classy Nicolai Klindt is currently in great form for both Elite League Leicester and Premier League Scunthorpe. The former Danish World Cup star is just five rides away from qualifying from the 2015 Grand Prix series.

23-year-old Ashley Birks is a fine young English prospect, and has recovered from serious back injuries sustained at Plymouth in September 2013. The Sheffield-based Birks won the National League Riders’ Championship in 2012. Along with Howe and Klindt, he currently rides for Scunthorpe in the Premier League.

The Cheetahs’ line-up is completed by Pole Rafal Konopka, who is in his first year of British racing at Premier League Redcar.

Another former Oxford man, Ben Barker, is riding for the Birmingham Brummies tonight.

Oxford Speedway Supporters’ Chairman Gavin Beckley said: “An event like this gives us the chance to show that interest is still alive in the Oxford Cheetahs.

“For the Oxford fans going along tonight, please take along your team colours – be it a jacket, scarf or whatever.”

New race jackets have been produced for the Birmingham and Oxford teams and these will be donated to the respective supporters’ organisations to assist with fund raising towards the revival of both clubs.

Admission has been set at a bargain £10 for 16 heats plus a top scorers race for the Gary Peterson Trophy, a rider tragically killed during a Wolverhampton vs Oxford meeting in October 1975.

Teams:

WOLVERHAMPTON: Lasse Bjerre, Ricky Wells, Rohan Tungate, Cameron Heeps.

BIRMINGHAM: Ben Barker, Danny King, Paul Starke, Ludvig Lindgren.

OXFORD: David Howe, Nicolai Klindt, Rafal Konopka, Ashley Birks.

CRADLEY: Gino Manzares, Kyle Newman, Aaron Summers, Stuart Robson.

I admit to being a little surprised to read this in the EL section?! But good luck to all the riders, especially Kyle Newman, for an injury-free evening.

Clearly there seem to be some 'fans' that are not in the 'any speedway is better than no speedway' camp, even though there is no live TV speedway on tonight!!

Probably none on bet 365 either -because they are showing Wolves v Eastbourne !!!!!!

I'm with 'BWitcher' on this one.

A totally meaningless meeting containing riders who have little or nothing to do with any of the teams 'competing'!

Only those with nothing else to do or should that be speedway supporters who must have some kind of a speedway fix on a Monday will surely turn up for this?

CVS states 'it should be a great evening'... but I wonder, who for?

BWitcher, when they have the next series of "Grumpy Old Men", why don't you go and apply to be on it. ;)

Yes, we get the idea, you're not keen on this meeting. Some of us are.

See you there tonight? (do you still go to Wolves every week these days?)

All the best

Rob

I'm against fans being treated like mugs tbh, plus its a disservice to a rider who lost his life racing for the club.

From your point of view I can see how you feel it is an opportunity to show support for Oxford.

I live in Portugal now so can't attend every week, I do when I'm in England.

A meeting for £10 with PL standard riders is a good deal as far as i am concerned.

The make up of the teams is ludicrous but it doesn't really matter unless you want to moan for the sake of it.

No idea why this is the EL section tho anyway either.

At least the meeting should bring some light relief from the dire Home Monday night performances of the main team.

Can only agree, complete waste of time running this sort of meeting mid season

Will be attending tonight for a fix of speedway but find it bad taste that Nigel Pearson is being quoted as saying that this event will give them an idea if Cradley fans will support PL racing, what a load of bull, why would any Cradley fan go tonight?

Its nothing to do with there team, maybe if they had thrown in Tom Perry or A N Other maybe but to use the attendance tonight as an excuse to stay NL next season is a joke.

Interesting how all those slagging it have a functioning club they can support, might be a while till the next Birmingham or Oxford fixture (hopefully only 7 months for the former).

It's not an Oxford fixture in any shape or form.

Those who go along thinking it is are quite simply mugs.

This is why speedway hasn't moved on for decades, promoters have long considered their fan base to be somewhat gullible and will turn up whatever league, competition, pretend teams are on show.

Well I am looking forward to this, its not like I have many meetings to look forward now my club has closed down. I just dont want to go tracks like Monmore or Brandon as a neutral, I would much rather see my team in action. This meeting gives us a chance to support our team, and hopefully impress any potential person coming in if we travel there in numbers. Apart from Cardiff I have not seen a meeting since mid june, I loved going every single week until the shambles at the Brummies happened.

So I applaud CVS for arranging this and will send a thank you email/letter to Wolverhampton Speedway in the coming days. What a mug I must be

Yeah, same goes for me as well. I'm attending tonight, as it will almost certainly be the last time the Brummies will track anything like a team this year.

TBF, I've always enjoyed the Monmore experience, and it's a chance to catch up with folks I haven't seen for a few months. Plus, I reckon it'll be a much better meeting than some are predicting....
