its a more difficult job in some ways than say football since if 4 riders are following each other round without any passing what is there to comment upon?

Also, they have to fill 90% of the time talking when there is no race actually taking place.

Can't be easy.

I'm thinking we should embrace the Nige and Kelvism's in a game of Grand Prix Bingo.... So members of the forum send it say 16 Nige and Kelvism's my contribution is "Greg Herbie Hancock".."How On Earth Did He Stay On The Motor Bike" We put them all on a bingo type card, and one by one during a grand prix we tick them off until we get a full house and reward our smugness with a beverage of our choice, hot or cold, alcoholic or non alcoholic whatever you feel is apt.

We then branch out to Elite/Premier league bingo on sky..Happy Days

I suppose todays commentators are faced with a situation unique to them, and that is that they are commentating every single week, sometimes twice a week and for 3 hours at a time.

In the 70's Dave Lanning was on maybe once every three weeks or so and nothing was live in those days - edited highlights only.

However, a quick glance at the synonym list shows that Kelvin has a choice of many words he could use as an alternative to his hugely excessive over use of 'terrific'.

you forgot to mention the great alec weeks who worked for the bbc sports, aye thats right bbc did cover speedway mainly the world champship in the briggs fundin era

I get annoyed with every commentator I listen to, in some way or other, whatever the sport. But as someone has pointed out already, in speedway's case at least the sport is being covered and in Eurosport's case, it's being covered pretty comprehensively.

So they can use Stanley Unwin for all I care, if he was still with us of course.

Back in the 80s, a fan, with studious attitude, actually wanted me banned from every speedway track in the country, simply for pronouncing Olly Tyvainerains name wrong!

I argued with him, having copped a look at his programme, that at least I knew how to spell the Dane's name!

I went to friends house for a GP party a while back and every time kelv or nige came out with one of their textbook sayings everyone had a shot of vodka. It's safe too say by the end everyone was slightly p***ed,good night though.

Also they are throwing the bikes at each other, not there not they are riding them.

Paddock, a type of Field (agriculture)

Paddock, the enclosed area at a race track where horses are paraded and mounted before a race, and unsaddled after a race; and by inference, similar preparation areas in motorsport

A bit pedantic but he's right in some odd way

Get Burnicle back on with his overt sexism and leering at the young ladies on view, he's comedy gold. I think he's a "hard charger" of a different variety.......

Aaah yes, good old Gentleman jack. I've met him a couple of times, smashing chap.

He generally copes well with bike racing, apart from being obsessed with what county riders are from. With 20-30 blokes (and the odd lady) and 20 laps to commentate on he does okay.

Which makes it harder to understand why he struggled with 4 riders over 4 laps, unless it was Sudden Sam confusing him!

How about, "[insert Riders Name Here] is trailing at the back!"

I would prefer the letter to Eurosport to be praising the fact that they are showing the GP and SWC given that SKY got shot of it and without Eurosport I suspect it would have mattered whether you like the commentator or not because you would have only seen results on the internet

P

Some people just have nothing better to moan about

Some people are perfectly happy to accept mediocrity and defend it by arguing that everyone should do the same because things could be worse. This is speedway's malaise. It holds the sport back in so many ways and lets those who make a living off speedway get away too often with rank amateurism. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to higher standards.
