Hemsley: King's Lynn A Race Track No More

Recommended Posts

I used to go to KL during the Cyril Crane / Littlechild era. A basic stadium with little creature comforts, but there was a good view of the racing. The present Stadium has upgraded and improved beyond all comparisom the facilities. However it is very poor for actually viewing the racing.

The only place you can't see the racing is if you stay on the flat and are on the short side. Huge grandstand and terracing all around. What more can you ask for. ?????

Hemsleys spot on about King's Lynn!

King's Lynn was superb until the late 90's when since then it has been drag racing with little passing and the lack of a centregreen makes it even poorer!

I first went to King's Lynn during their non League season in 1965 after the operation moved from the defunct Norwich track and used to love going to Saddlebow Road on a Saturday night so I've seen many, many meetings at King's Lynn over the years!

I never thought I'd say this but Ipswich produces better racing than King's Lynn and going to the Norfolk Arena doesn't interest me much these days!

And the best value racing in Norfolk and Suffolk is Mildenhall!

Though from what I've seen of the new Leicester, while some of the complaints have maybe been a little over the top, they certainly have a lot of substance with the shape completely wrong cause the straights are too long for the tightish turns!

You'll have to expand on "the lack of centregreen" as I can't see how that affects the racing??

It doesn't Screamer but something could be done to make it look better, wouldn't it have looked cool with a huge Monster logo painted on it for instance?!:-)

My ass would look better with a Monster logo but it doesn't everyone would agree hey

It doesn't affect the racing but it looks horrible and looked much better when there was grass in the middle!

Just my opinion but many others feel the same and positive vibes help!

I am not short and do not stay on the flat and must disagree with your view.

Not been to Leicester so can't comment on the racing there... reading that, I don't feel inclined to go either. I'm not saying the racing is always fantastic at King's Lynn, but what track does produce superb meetings week in week out? Part is dependant on the track, part on the riders who are racing on it. But as I've not been to King's Lynn either this year, I can't really comment on the racing there weekly either.

However... we all know we're in troubled times for British Speedway. But for a change, Team GB actually go straight through to the final in the World Cup... which has to be a positive for British Speedway, and to be celebrated, irrespective of what happens in the final. But no, Mr Hemsley, let's turn that around and make it into a negative by acting like a child arguing in the playground over who has the better toy. That's really going to help British Speedway.

</end grumpy opinion>

Interesting reading about people's perception of tracks, Speedway racing then and now, etc.

Suffice to say that, I'm being TOTALLY unbiased here guys. But nowhere, repeat NOWHERE, beat Waterden Road for close racing and overtaking - a point maybe substantiated by a myriad of various riders (in the 70's and 80's) stating in Speedway Mail & Star that Hackney was their favourite track.

Maybe the high banking on the bends, coupled with layer after layer of fresh shale, had something to do with this?

Suffice to say that at many tracks these days, I watch this sport and know only too well why the sport is dying on it's arse. :(

....and the pong from the Boake Roberts chemical works next door. That's what's missing from speedway these days. The fans would get so high on the chemical fumes being poured out they would forget about the racing. ;)

Classic tactic to deflect attention from your own problems; make up ludicrous nonsense about something else!

It's so predictable and oh so boring. Much like many of the races I have seen at Leicester this season.

Feel sorry for Leicester fans in all this, I think they need to stage some kind of 'intervention' with DH to convince him that there is a problem with their track which needs sorting and that this is what he should be concentrating on and not spouting nonsense which casts their club in a bad light. They deserve better.

I think he has kicked off a very interesting discussion.. I too was a little disappointed in KL on Sat. However, Eastbourne is by cmmon concensus a technical track but its no better there. The modern machinery is to blame. If only we could go back to uprights...technology has a lot to answer for....

Wonder if it would be poss for a promoter to stage a meeting with current riders riding uprights and see how it goes. I would attend for one.

Can we have one with old silencers as well ?

If you're suggesting it's the 'racing' your argument is well and truly flawed.

As someone who went from watching 60 meetings a year to about 10 in 3 years I assure you that the standard of racing is NOT the issue. The 4 riders, 4 laps thing is as good now as I ever remember it being.

The politics and cheating is worse than ever.

Mr Hemsley's recent output reveals something. That he is increasingly desperate to generate new customers (who will visit once and then never return) and is now grasping at any "free of cost" opportunity to "market" his product to the unsuspecting public of Leicestershire. But the more he talks it up and makes ridiculous "guarantees" the more chance that any new punters will be turned off when they realise they've had £16 ripped off them. As I said, it's desperation stuff.

Here's a thought, perhaps someone asked his opinion. And he just answered the question. He is entitled to his own view on things.

Maybe - but it's the bit at the end that betrays other motives
