Scunthorpe Scorpions Vs Redcar Bears (pl) - Friday, July 25th (7.30pm)

SCORPIONS IN DOUBLE DATE WITH BEARS

A VITAL COUPLE of days lay ahead for the FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions, as the team face the Redcar Bears home and away in Premier League action.

The Scorpions firstly travel north to the South Tees Motor Park on Thursday, before entertaining the Bears in the return fixture at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening (7.30pm).

Scunthorpe currently sit in third place in the Premier League table on a total of 28 points, the same number of points as second placed Ipswich. Two positive results will see the Scorpions move into second place, behind only runaway leaders Edinburgh.

Last week, the Scorpions hit 60 points for the first time this season, registering a 60-35 home win over Rye House, with a back-to-his-best David Howe scoring a fine paid 18-point maximum.

Redcar, having ridden one meeting more than Scunthorpe, are currently in eighth place on 19 points, some nine points behind the Scorpions. However, the Bears completed the early season double over the Scunthorpe in the League Cup, so there will be no complacency in the Scunthorpe camp.

Redcar contain two former Scunthorpe riders, Carl Wilkinson and Jan Graversen, in their ranks, with Wilko, in particular, being a Scorpions’ legend.

Team manager Dave Peet says: “In our last 3 or 4 home meetings, we have been very dominant, and that was been very pleasing to see. Our riders have really started to perform on a consistent basis around the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“We need another performance like that at home to Redcar on Friday. They won at our place in April, and we’re determined not to see a repeat of that.

“But if we’re going to turn into real contenders in the Premier League, we need some consistency in our away performances as well. We need to take the confidence built up by our recent home performances, take that in our away meetings, and start performing on the away tracks as well.”

Scunthorpe are likely to again use the rider replacement facility for Josh Auty in the two meetings against Redcar. The 23-year-old Yorkshireman is recovering from having his appendix removed.

SCHOOLS OUT FOR SUMMER…

With North Lincolnshire’s schools having broken up for the summer holidays earlier this week, Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey is hoping for a bumper turn-out of youngsters at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday evening.

Scunthorpe changed their cut-off point for admission prices for children prior to the start of the 2014 season, raising it so that all those under 18 are now regarded as children in terms of admission.

Speaking at the time of its introduction, Godfrey said: “I think we might be the first club to do it. The cut-off point is normally 16, but we’re going to raise that to 18.

“It’s the sensible thing to do. I suppose we might lose a few quid from those already coming in; but I prefer to see it as an opportunity of encouraging a few more younger people along.

“16 and 17-year-olds don’t have a lot of money and these days they have to still be in some form of education. By the time they are 18, they can leave education and are subject to a higher minimum wage.

“The school-leaving age has been raised, and it makes sense to move with the times. I think it will benefit us in the long-term. We’ll monitor it and see what it brings in.”

Godfrey now adds: “The schools have now broken up for the summer and the days are long and hot.

“By the evening, the young people from this area are probably looking for something a bit different. If they are, I hope we can tempt a few in the direction of the Eddie Wright Raceway.

“If they are under 18, the admission price is only £5. What better way to spend the night than coming along with your mates to watch the only motorsport with no brakes.”

There are 24 heats of action in total on Friday, with a nine-heat second half, including a Midland Development League match between Castleford and Long Eaton.

Admission prices for Friday:

Looking forward to my second meeting at the EWR, if only to listen-in on Rob Godfrey's conversation with the referee ;-)

No thread for tonight's meeting at Redcar it seems......are the updates incorrect or did Sunny elect to not give their top scorer a seventh ride in the final heat?

EDIT just seen the thread, apologies

A brilliant meeting tonight. Both teams going for it. Passing and re-passing. Well done both teams for a thrilling match. Ref had to spoil it. what the hell was he playing about at in ht 11, crowd was really angry shouting at him. we were looking at each other wondering what happened as none of us could see any wrong doings and we were stood near the start line. Another 3 pts cracking result!

The score line does not reflect the closeness of the match. Every heat had plenty of action. Felt sorry for Rob, last week he had the main sponsors in attendance and must have been keen for a close entertaining match. Unfortunately Rye House were shocking and the meeting was not the usual offering, pity they were not there tonight.

Brummie supporter and came up for this one, should have been at Lakeside watching my team in the EL, but this was a far better meeting than I would have seen if the Brummies hadnt closed down.

Great action, plenty of overtaking the odd fall, top class riding from all concerned Douglas and Jorgensen awesome riding from this pair, very enjoyable racing, nice people to talk to, well run and professional meeting.

Really hope we come back in the PL a far superior league to the so called Elite league, thanks Scunny for a good day.

Great to hear you had a nice good night,im thinking Scunny should extend the offer made to the Birmingham fans to the Newcastle supporters, then they will at least see how to prepare a race track and put on some entertainment

Fair play to the track guys,7 days of plus 25 temperatures and not a speck of dust all night

Joking aside,it was a top class meeting, both sets of riders adding to the entertainment, got to also say bad luck to Aaron Summers, rode his nuts off for very little reward

Really enjoyable night last night - track was superb.

Thomas's penalty in Heat 11 was a bizarre, while Hugh Skidmore will be left kicking himself for not looking back sooner on the final lap, although it didn't make any difference to the outcome - three points to the Scorpions.

Ryan Douglas really on it last night, and good performance all around from the Scorps.

Fantastic to read the thoughts of P T Preece. :t:

First ever visit to Scunthorpe - this track anyway as we've been to the old Quibel Park or whatever it was called - and what a brilliant set up it is. So glad I decided to go home from North Yorkshire on Friday instead of Saturday so we could call in and watch this meeting as the Bees weren't riding. Loved everything about it and the racing was great. What a shame my local track Leicester couldn't have been built like this instead of the one the promoter designed which just mainly produces gate and go racing. Also being a dog lover, (although I'm sure no-one has got that impression of me) it was lovely to see so many dogs around the place. All different breeds and sizes behaving themselves - I've not seen that many dogs in one place since Crufts. Unfortunately my two just went to sleep as usual so didn't appreciate the cracking speedway.

Forgot to add - £1 for a programme. Just the right price as I don't want to spend the usual £2.50p plus on something I'm going to chuck in the bin when I get home, hence the reason why I print my own programme for Coventry matches. Promoters being deliberately awkward and putting the teams in alphabetical order won't make me buy one as I just take a blank piece of paper to write the scores down if I can't find out the riding order.

haha.... So it's not perfect then?? Mark lemon says it was a very tricky track last night??

No tricky is not the word, just different. It actually produced some absolutely fantastic racing. And no dust in sight, despite the heat and an enforced 15-minute "sun break".

The inside line was probably the fastest last night, if the rider could keep the speed while riding tight. Normally it's the other way around. Both Nicolai Klindt and Ryan Douglas used the inside to pass riders. Mind you, Ryan also went around riders as well - he was properly Flyin' :t:

Another fabulous night of racing at the EWR - if you don't believe us, believe the Birmingham and Coventry fans who have posted on this thread

All the best

Rob
