Cardiff Could Other Venues Come In For Consideration For The British Gp In The Future.?

Recommended Posts

After Saturday a decent meeting and a great occasion could other venues come in for consideration for future GPS.?I say this because i don't know if it is correct? but was the gate only 31,000? a terrible gate if that is true.West Ham move into Wembley soon and there are rumours that the track is staying, and it is not impossible about a speedway return the landlords are interested in any revenue coming in.If that gate is true what a drop that was do they usually get 48/50,000? surely that is a worrying sign would WEMBLEY entice more people in? I believe it certainly would.

Don't know where "sidney" has heard about West Ham United moving into Wembley ?? ... they're moving into the London 2012 Olympic Stadium in a couple of seasons' time !!

Like Wembley, the Olympic Stadium doesn't have a roof over its playing area which is such a useful aspect for speedway's biggest capacities at both Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and Copenhagen's Parken Stadium.

Yes, the athletics track will be staying at the Olympic Stadium but the lower deck of seating is going to be adapted so that for football matches it can be moved over the outside athletics lanes to bring the crowd closer to the football touchlines (a simple concept that was built superbly with big hydraulic jacks into the initial construction of the Stade de France in the mid-1990's, nearly a decade before London even won its Olympic bid, but why that wasn't copied by Seb Coe and his chums is another story entirely).

As it's expensive enough to lay a temporary track of around 280-metres at either Cardiff or Copenhagen, I doubt BSI would want to also pay the cost of the extra materials needed to lay a temporary 400-metre track directly over the Olympic Stadium's athletics track so any attempt to stage speedway there would almost certainly be with another 280-metres track.

In any case, especially after past shambles at Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium with a Cardiff/Copenhagen capacity but no roof, BSI's policy seems to be very much based on only going through all the cost and upheaval of laying a big stadium temporary track if there's the luxury a roof to avoid all the hassles of a rain-off (and even that luxury almost wasn't enough at Cardiff last year !!)

I am sorry "Arthur you are right i meant the Olympic,( Barry Hearn the dictator after not getting his own way, grizzled and ended up putting Orient up for sale!) Would Wembley be an option i hope so, for me this is speedway's home a real tonic for the sport if it come true. Edited by sidney

CANNOT see the British GP being staged anywhere other than the Millennium for the foreseeable future... it's a perfect fit for all concerned.

good we dont want it anywhere else. Ive been to a fair number of stadiums in britain and nothing generates atmosphere like cardiff does with the roof closed

There is no other venue in Britain that could create the same atmosphere as Cardiff. It would look crap at Wembley the stadium would only be half full and your miles away from the action. Also if it rains your screwed at least it cardiff it's guaranteed to be on.

disagree with that. yes the weather is always out of hands. but wembley would be an absolute mega draw, publicity wise would double as well, to think cardiff has a better atmosphere than wembley, the people that says this, clearly never went to wembley!

2 points on this for me..

1. Why fix something that isn't broken? Cardiff is absolutely perfect! It's the biggest and best GP of the season, the city of Cardiff love and embrace it all weekend and there's not much more could be done to make it better. Hotels prices etc do go up, but London would be do exactly the same I'm sure, it's just the norm for most big stadiums.

2. Would 2 GP's a season affect Cardiff's attendance and importance? Like in my first point, Cardiff is known as the biggest and best GP, if there was 2 GP's a season I can bet a big percentage of the crowd couldn't afford 2 weekends a year, and possibly affect attendances at both GP's.

Like I said, don't fix what isn't broke.. Keep on improving Cardiff if that's even possible!

I went to Wembley on numerous occasions and I think that over the year's, at times, Cardiff has surpassed the atmosphere at Wembley. Cardiff is the new Wembley for the new generation. 14 years of history and growing each year!

How much of the wembley atmosphere was also driven by the fact that it was world final night - not part of the gp series? While I am a big advicate of the gps, they cannot replucate the tension of the one off final.

I agrre with other posters, it would be madness to move the gp from cardiff.

agree totally with that...a tape touch is not as vital under the gp system, it was lethal in a one off final...clearly its madness to move from cardiff, BUT, if wembley was ever an option, id favour wembley anyday of the week

81 world final was magical, yes some dull races (if watching on tape), but those penhall moves???????????????

It is not the best ,the occasion is great no doubt about that but we have been blessed with some great GPS this year at other venues. For the racing spectacle over the years,Cardiff has not been one of the best as i have said it is a great occasion and i hope people enjoy it for many years to come.

"Paddi " when you pulled up outside Wembley with endless other coaches the excitement and atmosphere was electric, for me alot different to Cardiff a different era.None of the racing was great, even the Penhall final was overrated but what a day out fans from all over supporting different riders.Friendly banter amongst the fans that day always showed that speedway was a great family sport.

It still does not beat the atmosphere at Wembley though Dean.

Sorry Sidney, but I think you're looking back on a time when Wembley was head and shoulders the best stadium in the UK. It simply isn't anymore. The new Wembley is very functional, but devoid of any real charm - the same goes for the surrounding area. In fact with the escalators and sushi bars in the concourse, Wembley can feel more like a shopping centre than a stadium. In my recent experience, I'd rank the Millennium Stadium, the Emirates and Twickenham as superior stadiums.

I have been to all three, Wembley, the Emirates and Cardiff, and the Emirates comes out on top but i would still place Wembley in front of Cardiff. My main preference is that if it is in the capital it might entice more through the gate especially from the foreign brigade.
