Blackbird
I see that there's been a 0-0 at the Kent vs Cradley match to night! Has this ever happened before in Speedway league history i wonder?
steve19620
Yes it has. Happened at White City v Swindon in 1978. Referee excluded all the riders under the 2 minute rule including the replacing reserves !
Bryn
Although I was there, my memory of the White City meeting is somewhat hazy (to say the least!) thanks to ageing process but I've a feeling that the riders from both sides due out in the opening heat had problems getting to the track caused by heavy traffic as did reserves who weren't ready - hence the 2mins exclusions galore! Last night's 0-0 at Central Park was the first time EVER I've witnessed, or indeed had to announce the result of a heat that saw four riders starting it and none finish it with any points! arnieg
Off the top of my head I can think of four other times: 1969 - Reading v Plymouth 1970 or 71 Rochdale v Workington (or was it Workington v Rochdale?) 1991 - Coventry v Middlesbrough 2009 - Coventry v Peterboro Edited July 15, 2014 by arnieg
lucifer sam
Oxford 1980. Opening meeting of the season - Oxford v Nottingham v Peterborough (3TT - challenge) Also 2012 - Northside British Under-15 Round had a race with no finishers (three riders fell simualtenously on different parts of the track - none were able to remount!). All the best Rob

daveallan81
Oxford 1980. Opening meeting of the season - Oxford v Nottingham v Peterborough (3TT - challenge) Speedway Star reports this heat (13) as void. Do you recall what happened? The 1991 Coventry one, was that when the referee (Will Hunter?) excluded the only remaining rider (Rick Miller?) for not trying?

Yep that's the one - it's the only 0-0 I've witnessed
Leicester Hunter
I'm quite surprised no-one has mentioned the night of the infamous punch-up at Hyde Road in 1971. 10th July 1971, Belle Vue v Leicester. With the score at 35-37 in Leicester's favour, Aces' Dave Hemus broke the tapes and was replaced by Alan Wilkinson. Alan Cowland drove inside Wilkinson on lap 1, who fell. Referee David Miller stopped the race and excluded Wilkie, who was furious, and made his feelings known to Cowland as he returned to the pit gate. As this fracas subsided, some fans got involved, and a free for all developed outside the pits. While all this was going on, Miller excluded the three other riders, Belle Vue's Soren Sjosten and Lions pairing Ray Wilson and Cowland under the 2 minute rule. With a very sour atmosphere having developed, Miller then declared the match over, a two point win for Leicester. I suppose it was largely academic, as the Aces couldn't have put a rider out in the rerun anyway, their other reserve Ken Eyre having completed his maximum allowed races sometime earlier. I also believe Leicester's Malcolm Brown had completed five rides as well, just leaving Tom Leadbitter to complete four laps alone. This match also halted Belle Vue's unbeaten British League sequence at Hyde Road, which extended back 49 matches, Sheffield being the last team to win a League match there in September 1968. All in all, not a satisfactory way to end such a winning run.
BL65
Cradley Heath v Exeter, 18th June 1966. Heat 12 was declared void by the referee after a protest by the home side, so the score was effectively 0-0. Chris Blewett was originally declared the winner, having caused Chris Julian, Jack Geran and Chum Taylor to fall. Julian and Geran remounted and finished, which until the successful protest would have resulted in a score of 2-4. On 3rd June 1967, heat 7 of the meeting between Cradley Heath and Oxford saw Tommy Bergvist and Dave Schofield excluded, leaving the Oxford pair of Des Lukehurst and Maury McDermott to contest the re-run unopposed. Lukehurst won in a time of 80.0 after the pair had cruised round almost side by side for laps. The referee ignored the valid protest from the home team calling for the Oxford pair to be excluded for not making a bona fide attempt to race, otherwise there would have been another 0-0.
