It seems that there are discussions to move future Stockholm GP from Friends arena to the other new built arena in Stockholm called Tele 2 arena.

Which is located next to Johanneshovs isstadion and Stockholm Globe arena, just south of central Stockholm.

Även inom VM-speedwayen – nästa helg körs deltävlingen på Friends – förs diskussioner om att flytta till Tele2.

Friends as an arena is very nice but a little too big/expensive and without proper infrastructure while is a bit smaller but with

good infrastructure, subway station Globen is just a few min walk and there is plenty of parking facilities nearby.

So we'll see what happens.

HAVEN'T heard that but no doubt it will be a topic of conversation this coming weekend now that you have brought into the open.

Agree with your comments about the Friends Arena. Fantastic stadium but is it a deliberate policy to almost ban cars from the area?

Not sure what the crowd will be come next Saturday but current crop of Swedish riders aren't bestowed with huge box office appeal although Andreas Jonsson's win in Vojens might have sparked some additional interest.

Polish fans, for all sorts of reasons, don't travel in the numbers that they did, probably in part because they like most of us find cities like Stockholm very expensive.

  • 2 weeks later...

One would have thought the series organisers would have sufficient expertise to advise new circuits on the best layout. Ole Olsen has never been one to hold back on how he thinks tracks should be prepared (and didn't he even suggest chicanes in the corners at one point?), and surely Tony Olsson knows/knew something about tracks?

Almost entirely down to who coughs up the readies, or where BSI can hire a track cheaply enough to run one to fulfil their contractual obligations. There are umpteen GPs in Poland because their municipalities were until recently, daft enough to pay ridiculous money for the privilege, and no doubt this also explains some of the more esoteric GPs in non-major speedway countries.

I don't think it can be said that Auckland was really a success. The promoter openly admitted to losing a lot of money, and attendances weren't really that good despite official claims.

Would think expansion is down to finding sufficient mug.. erm.. promoters willing to host, and the fact that SGP is starting to encroach on the Polish Leagues where riders earn most of their money.

That's the problem with New Zealand - basically the speedway interest is midget cars, sprint cars and sidecars. Not much actual solo speedway in NZ nowadays - main tracks (not every week) are Rosebank, Moore Park and Oreti Park. Much the same in USA - not a nationwide speedway following - just Champion in New York State on the East Coast, and the other solo action all in California.

The big motrorcle track interest USA nationwide is Flat Track (Dirt Track) while midget cars and sprint cars also compete nationwide - and pay mega-dollars to the top racers.

But a USA GP could create more speedway interest there - look what the World Cup has done in regard to USA football.

Has the football world cup in the usa 20 years ago really grown the sport in the us?

I'd say yes. It's not turned 'soccer' into a major sport, but it does now appear to be able to sustain a professional league in both the mens and womens' game, and the USA has qualified for every World Cup since 1994.

I think womens' football has particularly benefitted, even if it's totally over-hyped.

HAD a chat with the Finland promoters in Stockholm. There are changes being made to the soccer pitch at the stadium in Tampere because Finland will play their home Euro championship qualifiers there. Once that has been done they will set about laying the speedway track ... wider corners, shorter straights. Don't shoot me... I'm just the messenger!

Story in the paper on this today.

Starting next monday, atleast 1 million euros to widen the soccer pitch by 2 meters, dig up the whole pitch and install heating.

The actual home of our soccer team, Helsinki Olympic stadium will be renovated and the team is in exile for 3 years. No mention of SGP in the story, but I bet no one expected it either. They will work as long as the weather allows, then start again in the spring. Excellent and very precise plan IMO. :approve:

GHOSTIE! Caption of a picture on the first page states: "This has not been done anywhere before... combining football stadium with apartments..." Except naturally in Eskilstuna...? This is regarding another football stadium in town, not Ratina.

Not exactly, when they penned the deal with Riga they already stated that in 2015 they would go back to Daugavpils.

"SGP rights holders BSI Speedway have signed a two-year deal with promoter Speedway Grand Prix of Latvia to bring the series to its fifth capital city for 2014 and Daugavpils in 2015."

So BSI have given up on Riga already...?

THE track in Riga is being completely relaid with more drainage and new material. The facility there has huge potential and not just for speedway. The promoters are still determined to have a SGP in their capital city.

Expect more 2015 venues to be named over the weekend

So if they are having to improve drainage and relay the track in Riga it wasn't just the weather that caused the cancelled GP as BSI wanted us to believe. Thank you for confirming that!
