george.m
Due to the unfortunate incident with the burger making our team stronger, we didn't want to be seen to be greedy, so settled on just winning the league On the subject the forum was started for, I would agree the 1991 Arena Essex side was much stronger than the current Monarchs side, and stronger than any other teams at this level since I started going in 1984 I never witnessed the 1982 Newcastle team, so can't comment on how that would have fared against the 1991 side. Was it the '82 Newcastle side? I can remember the one around '77 / '78 or so. Owen bros., Blackadder, etc. Now that was a strong side!

I'm seriously thinking I'm getting dementia these days as my memory is like a, like a, like a ...... Brazilian defence.
Chewbacca
Newcastle ended that season with a combined average of 54.13 and that was with a #7 averaging 1.71 The top 6 scored 19 full maximums and 16 paid maximums between them. Cookie is good but he's not Joe Owen Just checked the 1976 team Combined average of 57.35 with a total of 56 maximums, of which Joe Owen scored 28 full maximums from 39 matches and averaged 11.54. He was 19 years old. If I remember correctly his only dropped points in the league at Brough Park were due to a broken chain although he did lose to John Jackson in the Silver Helmet match races (won away though and then the decider). There is no doubt at all that Joe Owen was the best 2nd tier rider ever and but for serious injury would have been world class.

Certainly the best i've ever seen at that level

SCB
Glasgow 2011 until Grazjonek got injured, best I've seen KL 2009 with Ward as well Yet Newport chewed them up and spat them out in the KOC.
scaramanga
there are some good riders round at the moment but overall i dont think that the quality in depth is in speedway as it was a few years back its allways hard to judge different eras as the equipment is different and tracks are prepaired different edinbrugh are on a role and pulling off results that really most dont expect some of its luck some of them are just the right place at the right time when other teams are having a off night at home due to injuries or track conditions
Bagpuss
I think Edinburgh are reaping the rewards of taking punts on both Sedgemen and particularly Worrall, both were arguably risky signings but have come off spectacularly. Add that to a home advantage which is stronger than most and the best number one in the PL by some distance and it's been a recipe for dropping very few points up to the middle of July. I think they deserve credit for putting faith in these two riders when others chose not to. Edited July 12, 2014 by Gordon Bennett

Bagpuss
I think it was if you consider his form for you guys last year. Chances are he was going to have a better year this year regardless but nothing is certain, and very few people could have for seen what he has produced. dontforgetthefueltapsbruv
stevie on a 3 point was never a gamble.... Totally agree but an improvement to 5+ wouldve been seen as exceptional. To be averaging over 8 and have his rolling above 6.5 by July is something no one wouldve predicted.
Bagpuss
Depends on your definition of 'gamble'really, I guess his average was never going to drop but three pointers are usually signed with a view to putting a point or two on.
