stevebrum
Happened to us in 2007 in the PL, finished top but lost in the Play Off semis. At least we had the consolation of winning the cup and premier trophy but losing the league hurt. Would be the same this year if we finish top but will take a lot of pride and satisfaction from our performances and seeing our younger riders develop enormously. If Wolves cant win then i seriously hope the Stars do. The best assembled side in many a season. They have been a joy to watch.
Star Fever
That means nothing if they don't win the play offs tho! Finishing top means nothing. I seriously still cant see any team beating the Stars over 2 legs. As far as I'm concerned finishing top of the league at the end means everything - it would prove Lynn were the best team over a league season of 36 matches. Winning the play-offs is something else (mainly a money-spinner) and yes that determines 'The League Champions' but really it only shows who's the best team over after a measly 4 extra matches. That'd be the icing on the cake ofc but regardless, I'm sure no Lynn fans would ever forget 'the year we topped the league' whatever the outcome of the play-offs.
Trees
The play offs could be turned into a big money spinner with a sponsor perhaps and be very significant! Every year, every team that finishes top of the league standings but goes on to balls up the play offs are robbed of praise for their efforts during the year, of course it's not right. If only the BSPA thought it significant enough to award a Top of the League trophy or something like that, why not?

Topping the `league` and not winning the play offs means you failed at the business end of the season. Gone are the days of `topping the league wins`. There are plenty that believe it should still be that way still tho! Facts are the Play offs (whether you agree/like them etc) decide who wins the league, nothing else matters.

Fair enough. But you can only win the play offs - not the league.
tellboy
Is there any other sport that you can't win the league without winning the play-offs? I would be very happy to finish top of the league knowing you would have been the most consistent team over 6 months and 36 matches. But I would be disappointed to lose the play-offs over a 4 week period of 4 matches.
Bagpuss
Rugby League & Rugby Union. To me is not the fairest way to decide who are champions BUT its been this way for twelve seasons now, its nothing new and everyone knew the rules before the season started, and its a winner with Sky as well as the punters who fill stadiums for play offs year after year. I think its important though to recognise the achievement of the team who does top the pile each year, however that may be.
Daniel Smith
Fair enough. But you can only win the play offs - not the league. There will be no celebration from me 'if' & it still is an if we finish top. Finishing top as I said earlier is merely an advantage to choose you semi final opponents and the choice of having the home leg last in the final. You win absolutely nothing for topping the table. Absolutely nothing to celebrate. Finish top and not win the PlayOffs is failure. It all comes down to that last meeting. I love the PlayOffs massively. If finishing top won the league, just how boring and pointless would the rest of the season be. At least there's something still to really really really look forward to (if we're in it)

I believe this should be the case aswell. As in football you are champions in the leagues below the Premier league if you finish top and you get a trophy for your efforts. And then there is the play-offs to which the winners also get a trophy everyone's happy are they not.

But that's in promotion / relegation, completely different circumstances. The top teams don't get involved in the PlayOffs

The top teams don't get involved in the PlayOffs Yes I know. What I was trying to say is it just seems worthy that the team who comes out on top gets rewarded at least a trophy at the end of the season for their efforts. And then enter the play-offs to see who wins. Maybe with speedeway in such a state at the moment an extra trophy is not affordable.
semion
Maybe finishing top should be rewarded with a cash bonus. No point in being awarded a meaningless trophy

Finishing top gives you choice of semi final opponents and the 2nd leg in the final. Trophies are for winners and in Speedway topping the table makes you a qualifier. That's it, need to get your heads around it and be prepared for disappointment.
stevebrum
Maybe finishing top should be rewarded with a cash bonus. No point in being awarded a meaningless trophy I like the idea of a reward for finishing top. However the only trophy that MEANS anything is the Play off title Edited July 4, 2014 by stevebrum
Daniel Smith
Maybe finishing top should be rewarded with a cash bonus. No point in being awarded a meaningless trophy That's certainly an option, the higher up the table the larger proportion of the league finances from sponsorship etc
Trees
Of course, perhaps again it could be sponsored, I'd love to think it could be sponsored by the fans, £1 a piece every year or whatever people want, nice lil bonus for the team eh! Sophies Mate
Is this topic about Eastbourne vs Kings Lynn or about who can win the league and the play offs? If its the latter then the topic name needs to be changed! Dont wish to be rude but can we actually discuss the meeting??

Not being rude but if there were some Eastbourne fans around to discuss the meeting then it would be. It's not easy talking to yourself
Trees
What have you to say then Sophie's Mate about the meeting? Meanwhile does it really matter if the thread goes off on a tangent?
