Rebels V Comets July 4th

Recommended Posts

I live 15 miles from the track the time is 16-10 and it hasn't rained all day.

While looking at the weather radar it is just starting to rain at the track.....which just goes to prove that where you live has little or no bearing on the weather at the Oaktree Arena  !

That is very true, I was surprised it said track waterlogged on Rebels web site. You will be pleased to know it has now started raining lightly here at 16-30. Will not have to water the garden tonight.

Ex Rebel Christian Hefenbrock is riding in the European Championships this Sunday, on Eurosport.

pity this meeting is off... Workington are on an unbeaten away league run. think only Edinburgh have the same away record. ie. unbeaten in away league fixtures.. i think we would have kept that away rum going as well..

Has it been raining?

I live about a mile from the track - it rained between 4 and 5pm, but though it was a cloudy and dull evening, there was no more rain. You can understand the logic behind an early call-off, but I think they got this one wrong. And yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but got to feel sorry for those Worky fans who did make the long journey - even Taylorj. So frustrating.

its an easier decision to make when you have a few riders missing aswell, happening too often nowadays IMO....if a track is waterlogged then fair enough, but on the strength of a forecast is getting dafter and of course is open to abuse.

Always thought that after the incident at Belle Vue a year or two back an official SCB referee had to make the decision, upon inspection of the track, as to whether or not to call a meeting off, dont know if that's what happened here or if it ever actually happens at all?

Seems a bit strange that a few posts suggest the weather wasn't all that bad and there "could" have been a prospect of the meeting going ahead yet the strength of a weather forecast swayed the argument, maybe if clubs were made to provide photographic evidence of the track conditions prior to a call off we might start seeing a few less of them, just a suggestion and "not" a swipe at Somerset, it's not in their interests either to lose a fixture?

Not really. As I said, it rained sometime between 4 and 5, but then nothing till after 10. Although I realise the OTA has it's own micro-climate, I'd be amazed on this occasion if it was any different at the track.

Have to agree with Arson fire, calling off a meeting some 10 hours before tapes up due to, what proved to be, an inaccurate weather forecast is not the way to go, in my opinion. I'm sure the promotion had good reason, but that's not much consolation to Stoneylegend and his companions. I'll wager that if the weather forecast is similar next Friday, we won't see such an early call-off!

Think Somerset used the weather as their Get of Jail free card here, after travelling since 9.30am we passed the track at 9.05pm and all roads were dry , yeah the forecast looked poor most places but having no rain all week and even on Friday wasn't forecast til after 4pm , think calling it off at 9am was premature to say the least. Agree with Arson Fire here, its all too easy to call off a meeting on the strength of a possible rain off, especially when the hosts are missing two key riders. And Willowman wonders why Somerset leave a bitter taste in my mouth !!!! I bet you next Friday I'l be standing under my bloody umbrella for 3hours to watch the PL Pairs

For all of you moaning about the early call off remember the promotion aren't made of money and any call off comes with signifiacant expenses to them. The earlier the call off the less this expense usually is so with the news last week that 1 track has probably ceased racing and another two struggling to be able to run next season already it makes 'business sense' for the promotion to make the call. A poor weather forecast has a dramatic influence on the attendance anyway so if they had held on and on and got the forecast rain and called it off at 7.30pm with fans inside the stadium they would have been slated for that as well. They really can't win but if you want to see the sport continue the fans also need to think of the wider picture of the whole thing from their point of view. Yes it is frustrating that some didn't get your speedway 'fix' last week but we live in England supporting an outdoor sport and the weather is unpredictable so we have to deal with the issues it throws at us. No speedway this week is better than no speedway for the whole of next season or beyond.

I sympathise with the Worky fans upon ther long journey for no speedway but Somerset ain't a bad part of the world to spend a night! Until we get a roof over the OTA (!!) anytime you make that journey from Cumbria it is the risk you take. Some you win some you lose!

I think Ronnie Allan is based nearby to the OTA and so is possibly used as the SCB point of contact in helping with decisions re meetings going ahead or not. I seem to recall a mention of him being invovled for the PL Final 2nd leg last October during the day whent he weather was not at its best.

For those suggesting the weakened team being a factor i would like to think the Somerset boys would still have been too strong for the Comets, ex Rebels and all, anyway.

I sense the BSPA make the call this week rather than the Somerset promotion but with SKY in town i reckoon it is unlikely to get called off too early.

If that's the case, it won't be the fault of the Somerset promotion, so you're casting your line in the wrong direction. It will be down to the BSPA meeting co-ordinator, as you well know the pairs is a BSPA shared event, and not a club meeting.

Having said that I suppose that won't stop you saying otherwise, as I know you love a spot of fishing.

Ooops....Looks like Drew2 beat me to it
