Birmingham Future In Doubt ? Alan Phillips Has Had Enough!

Recommended Posts

Could Birmingham track share if a solution is found, but access to Perry Bar is delayed due to red tape? Just so they don't get a backlog of unridden home fixtures?

A good idea but how would the rental situation for use of the possible second venue be addressed. As they are presumably in default in regard to their present home, the landlords there could seek an injunction that any revenue from a second home be made over to them - at least that's what a "legal beagle" frnend of mine says.

Poole, Wolves, King's Lynn and Lakeside - clearly sturdy enough for the current level of the Elite League both in terms of their finances and stadium availability.

But after that ... what's your minimum number of clubs for a "meaningful EL" ? !!

And as for Leicester, how can anyone describe them as sturdy while David Hemsley remains in such dominant charge ? !!

David Hemsley is the owner of Leicester Speedway and so he should be. Don't the other clubs all have a main man? Track availability is not an issue and no rent needs to be paid to an outside source. I would suggest therefore that Leicester should also qualify for your sturdy Elite group.

From todays mail:

"Birmingham could race their last-ever meeting tonight at Belle Vue.

Crisis club Birmingham race what could be their last-ever meeting tonight when they head to Belle Vue with the future of the club still in grave doubt.

Former owner Tony Mole admitted over the weekend he has been in talks with the British Speedway Promoters Association, who are paying the riders for tonights meeting, about rescuing the ailing outfit.

But there has been a major stumbling block because of the amount of debts which will need clearing for the sport to resume in Birmingham including riders, other clubs, rent and staff.

The BSPA have pulled the plug on Wednesdays meeting with Leicester at Perry Barr because the stadium is unavailable until the rent arrears are brought up to date. British Speedway chairman Alex Harkess said: Its fair to say this could be the last meeting for Birmingham.

Any takeover is very complex and we will give a two-week period of grace to establish whether something can be sorted out after that time then Im afraid the club will fold and the riders are free to sign for other clubs.

I understand Mole pulled the plug on talks at one stage over the weekend but is considering one last push to try to take the club back on before it becomes too late."

not sure that will make much difference, the running costs of the stadium will remain the same and the cost of the team couldn't be much cheaper than he already has?

who would want to track share? and possible mess up the relationship with their own landlords?

Would it be possible for Birmingham's remaining home fixtures to be completed at another track with another person in charge. If so this would not see the demise of the Brummies and would not get in the way of any legal or outstanding debt issues which would still be the responsibility of the current owners.

Given that article above - Why is tonight's meeting at Belle Vue going ahead ?

By racing tonight, all it would appear to do is increase the level of debts to the Brummies squad, and result in a match that, unless an 11th hour rescue package happens, will be expunged from the records ? If I was a Brummies rider, I would not be at all keen to ride tonight, as it will just increase the amount of money that I am owed,,,,

Personally, I think its far more sensible to stop all racing activity by the Brummies, both home and away, until we know the outcome of any rescue talks, with hopefully Tony Mole or AN Other able to at least get the Brummies through to the end of this season.

Apologies. Need to read articles with a light on in future.

You are of course correct. so 8 is the minimum it seems.

I think you have to go back to the 80's when there was only six teams in the old British League division 1 set up. So saying "Elite League" was perhaps the only error in your comment. ;)

The riders pay has been guaranteed by the BSPA for tonight - as was last Wednesdays at Poole.

It will not increase their money owed as the BSPA have said they are covering last Wednesday`s and tonight`s money-presumably as an association they were mindful that poole and Belle vue had these fixtures in place and a late call -off of their home match would be damaging to their business.

Of course. Just over a hundred years ago, Harland & Wolff faithfully promised The White Star Line that the Titanic wouldn't sink. Look at what happened there...

No they didn't :)

But hopefully the Brummies have better luck than them :)

Not looking good though. Sad to see our first and second major city can't support speedway.

Is it just a sign of the times or that speedway has become an anachronism? :(

Club cannot sustain top flight speedway or maybe any speedway. Best to stop this year to cut further losses and drop down a league for 2015.

I don’t know if dropping down a league will help much, as Birmingham will still the problem of high rent, not much chance to maximise income through food/drinks sales and limited access to the stadium/track to for preparation, practice and bring on a youth team. The wage bill either in the elite or premier league may not be the problem but the overheads at Perry Barr might be.

Is there any chance Birmingham could find a home of their own in the city? Now that they have proved over the past 7 years that Speedway in Birmingham isn’t going to bring about a total breakdown in society (like some almost seem to think back in 2005)

Maybe the council would look more positively at applying to run at another site. There is a large brown field site some way back from the Aldridge road in between the canal and the M6 I believe it was where the old container base us to be. It’s not too close to houses and right next the M6 so I guess the ambient noise is always fairly high in that area.
