ColinMills
if theres enough people interested, why not make use of this forum to give a young brit (no particular one in mind) a massive step up?....at a function i was part of a sponsored darts match 24 hrs raised £1,100...10 players all topped £100 in sponsors..which made me think, if, say, 30 people on here, arranged a sponsor day, of some kind, between us, we could hand over roughly £3,000 to a deserving rider, or even a struggling club?....as i say, just a thort, bit IF people are up for it, lets do it!
Guest
Are you linked to another Poster who also comes up with these sort of ideas. Gemini
When the forum first started in 2001 one of it's titles was FAST - Forum Assistance for Speedway Training (I think!) I'm sure one of the older members will correct me if I'm wrong. Some of us donated a small sum of money each month (I think...... again!) towards helping young riders just starting out. As my memory is awful the only one I can remember is Ben Wilson but I'm sure there are others who will be able to reel all the names off. Personally these days I wouldn't donate as I prefer to give money to abused dogs as I think they are more needy.

Gemini
And another one whose name I can't remember who became more famous for having himself filmed on the toilet. James somebody was it? Money well spent there. .....gustix.....After the fiasco of the "Save Coventry meeting" that originated from you. I will not be donating in any way to this project. That comment is really uncalled for. The only reason the 'Coventry Meeting' has come to nothing is more to do with the reluctance shown by the fans to do anything at this stage. Guest
And another one whose name I can't remember who became more famous for having himself filmed on the toilet. James somebody was it? Money well spent there. I used the term fiasco because one could never get a stable answer as to what was happening. It always had the appearance of being disorganised? One could never find out exactly what was happening. Let me make this clear: there i nothing I would like more than to see Coventry speedway continue. I have had an intetest in the club since its post-war revival in 1948. In the latter part of the 1950s I regularly attended meetings there - travelling up with one of the Bees' London-based riders. Why when talk of a meeting did the organisers not get the stock car supporters involved in the save Coventry - the stadium as well as the Bees. The cars have been there since 1954 and, of interest, the final of their first meeting was won by a former speedway rider - Percy 'Hellcat' Brine, the older brother of Wimbledon and England star Cyril Brine. I am sure the assistance of stock car supporters would have brought a reasonable attendance to a 'save Coventry meeting.'
ColinMills
im reluctant to answer gustix, for fear of "going into one".. but to answer above qustion.....there was no organisers!..all i was trying to do, was to highlight Coventry Speedway"s plight, and maybe foolishly, thinking there would be loads of like minded people..Having arranged Mr Pawsey, (who bent over backwards to help), i then arranged tv, and local press..All this done 125 miles away!..and may i add, not many MPs would give time of day to someone outside their voting perimiter!! On three occasions, i asked for 1......just 1 spokesperson, to speak up on the day, with Mr Pawsey, again, i could of quite easily of done this, but i thought it wouldnt go down to well with locals if i was to do this..No one person came forward for this. I had 8 people confirming they would attend this meeting..I called up and spoke to the Honeycombe public house, who were very accomadating in letting us use there venue..i had messages on Coventry Speedway fb page as well, so after all this, for someone to call my efforts a FIASCO, does slightly niggle me..I was more than happy to drive down on the day, think other club fans would, but hence this oppertunity in now passed. I personally think the Coventry public desperately want speedway to remain, but i also think, you may now be leaving it too late..As stated before, just look how long its taken Belle Vue to get new stadium, Leicester, Birmingham..theres also many that never returns, long eaton, cradley plus others..As for the sponsorship idea, gain i dont care if people want in or not, but im no rip off merchant, again was just willing to help, but just sometimes ( a lot in speedway) you can end up hitting your head against a brick wall

Well the comment I made - as seen above - earned at least "one like". You will find it's no good "firing one arrow" and hope it lands in the right place. You need to pre-plan carefully, consider the possible good and bad points, then start building the format for the meeting - speakers, venue, date. Tbh I have been around speedway far too long to worry about people "going into one" over one of my comments. Basically people may not like home because I strike at points they may well want to hide or belive have not or will not happen. Your idea for the meeting was a good one: but you failed to do the groundwork before announcing it. Edited June 22, 2014 by Guest

I felt for you at the time - you clearly stuck your neck out with a lot of people to try and get things moving and met apathy. You led the horse to water but..... Imo you did all you could At least you tried and did everything you could feasibly do to garner interest and action - I wonder how many of us could really look in the mirror and say the same. The FAST scheme mentioned by others was run in the earlier days of the forum and had not a bad input for 3 or 4 seasons. A number of forumers paid in I think it was £5 a month and sponsored riders who at that time were CL level and still to break into PL speedway. My memory is Ben Wilson, William Lawson, James Cockle and I think maybe 2 others one of whom may have been Ben Barker though I dont remember him. I will have something on it somewhere on an old hard drive but it was done on a very basic basis although there was a constitution, I recall there were wee cheap keyrings and we tried to do cheque presentations every month to the chosen 'sponsored' rider/riders at different tracks with different members doing the presentation - it was £100 per month it gave to the youngsters. Like everything else though it had its shelf life especially with the recession starting to bite and naturally it was one of the first things people would cut back on and it just basically ran its course at the time

How did i fail to do the groundwork gustix? i had MP/TV/PRESS all sorted, i had date, and yes i had venue albeit a bit late on that count..i had every single aspect covered...the one and only thing i didnt have was a local speaker, despite numerous attempts for one. not knowing any local coventry fans, i think you would agree, i needed someone to step up. the other thing i didnt have was public backing in enough numbers. 8 people in fact..so excuse my ignorance, but the groundwork in arranging the date and the important people WAS sorted, 125 miles away. if the coventry public couldnt/wouldnt spread the word, i couldnt do anything about that..as i stated, this thread and coventry fb was notified...theres do-ers in life, and theres moaners..as big bro says..you decide! Do you care enough about coventry speedway to join me? take my challenge and show me your true colours? show me how much you want to help?..i will go through all the connections again, if you throw all your weight behind this........ i await your reply........i have all the important numbers, contacts in my book, all ready to go
Gemini
James Cockle? Yes that's the one. I mustn't be too critical as I suppose being filmed on the toilet is what young lads do these days. .......Lioness...... Also Fleece, Caps and Tops all with Speedway Forum embroidered on them. I know because Ray still has his and wears them regularly and I have my Fleece. I keep trying to throw the cap away because it's rather faded now but I think Ray is very attached to it and won't let me.

Why should I. It was you who instigated the meeting on the BSF and I weighed in with as much advice as I could to help make it a success. Read all my messages, collate the good points that put forward and use them in the planning of any meeting. what a surprise.....gustix replies with his NEGATIVE comments right after my previous posts, yet when i ask him to do something POSITIVE......its oh so quiet????????????? I stopped looking at ths thread days ago, which is why I never replied to your message. As I said, I am not prepared to devote time to organising a meeting because my experience of the sport is that little positive will come from it. The fact that as you say eight people indicated they would attend your proposed meeting sadly proves this venture is very much "a dead duck in the water." Unfortunately, I cannot give you advice other than what I have previously to make a possible meeting a success. I attempted this in 2009 with my husband (he had been involved with F.A.S.T.)-- at the time I was sponsoring Josh Auty and we had fliers printed which we handed out at Coventry asking people if they could donate as little as a fiver every month. Everyone agreed it was a brilliant idea but, alas, no money was forthcoming. You can but try. I now sponsor (albeit modestly) 2 riders who both are very grateful and even though it's not a fortune they assure me every little helps. Yes that's the one.
