Conkers Posted June 17, 2014 Report Share Posted June 17, 2014 (edited) Russian Ice Speedway fans are mourning the loss of Andrei Gavrilkin, of Samara Ice Knights. He died following a road accident near his home in Saransk on 16th June, just days before his 24th Birthday. Gavrilkin was considered one of the best up and coming riders in Russia, winning the European Championship in 2009, aged 19. He was second in 2012, and has won the Cup of Russia for the last three years. Gavrilkin was born in Saransk, and started his career with his local club, before joining Samara in 2012. Reports from Russia say that Andrei was returning home from Togliatti, having signed a contract to ride for Mega-Lada in the 2014/15 season, when a truck collided head on with his car, and he was pronouced dead at the scene.
