Sheffield V Scunthorpe Pl 12/6/14

Recommended Posts

I was debating whether or not to go tonight - six home matches and the third visit of Scunthorpe.

I did go in the end, but came out after heat 13. There was nothing wrong with the racing and no complaints about the result but, yet again, on a perfect night with only one fall which didn't delay the racing, it was 9:35 p.m. as I got back into the car.

110 minutes after the meeting began I has seen 13 minutes or so of racing and had therefore spent 97 minutes watching the tractor going round, watching the riders gardening at the start line and watching some woman trying to open a box with a key that didn't fit and watching nothing much in particular.

When I was a kid and there were 13 heats, my mum and dad wouldn't let me stay for the second half on a school night and, living 12 miles from the track, I was generally in bed for half past nine. Now, if I stay for the 15 heats, living three miles from the track, I am rarely in before 10:15.

Looking around the crowd tonight there was hardly any kids there. I wouldn't take kids on a school night with the presentation as it is.

Looking round the stadiums and seeing the ever dwindling crowds is it any wonder that people aren't coming. The presentation is awful and its too expensive to be on every week.

Please, just get on with it and let us get home at a reasonable hour. It's boring.

Well that was pathetic. Wanting to make Sheffield a fortress and the Sheffield riders were up for getting revenge against Scunny. What a joke. Tigers are like a poor away side on their own track. Scunny won at a canter. Fair enough we got near mid match but again a poor start and a poor finish did us. We have riders who look defeated as soon as they start and either no power or worst still no confidence to improve.

Simon S. looks like an individual who just goes out to win by as far as he can.

Taylor looks like he will never reach the standard that he had before his injury.

Leigh would be ok as a second string in a better side.

Andre maybe the years have caught up with him

Ty, not there tonight, but must be one of the worst 9pt rider signings we have ever had.

Simon N tried his best but not much sign of being any better.

Josh now an assett , but not looking like an under-21 champion at the moment.

Bottom of the League, out of the league cup and probably out of the KO cup, where do we go now. With the world cup now on unfortunately there is nothing to get me excited enough to get down to Owlerton. No entertainment and no enjoyment. £17 will now be better off staying in my pocket and go towards finding other things to do on a Thursday. For me tonight was a sad night, as after being a Tigers fan for 45 years, i think thats it for me.

Some decent racing and a very good track last night i thought

What was it with the start marshall, silly old goat, constantly pointing at the Scunthorpe riders then up the refs boxs??

Did anyone else think the ref got it wrong at end of heat 14,Auty seemed to slow down to let Jorgensen take the win, which i thought he did...but ref gave it to Josh???

On the Tigers front,Steand really is mustard around there,Bates looked injured and the rest hit and miss

Fastest way around last night was the outside and you got Hall sat having his Tea in the carvery!!!!---for fecks sake, that team needs him in the middle order --not sampling the carrots!!!

Well said. For entertainment at Owlerton Richard Hall is the man.

Some interesting points made, but I would point out that;

Fortress Owlerton; Only one team has beaten Sheffield at Sheffield this season.

Bottom of League; Yes we are, but look at the meetings rode and you will see that on average most teams have rode nearly double the amount of meetings we have.

Out of the KOC; Not yet, I still think that we can pull that one back.

League Cup; I give you that one, but it was Edinburgh who are looking as though they could go through the League programme losing very few matches.

Josh Bates; No secret that he is carrying an injury, so that is probably hampering him.

Okay I would not disagree with the fact that the team are not performing as they should or could, but the fact remains that was only the 6th home meeting that raced and we have reached mid June, generally you would expect to have seen the team race double those amount of meeting by this stage.

The present Scunthorpe side is littered with riders that are ex Sheffield riders or Sheffield track specialists and to beat them we needed to have the team at full strength and everyone fit, I certainly would not judge the team on 3 performances against the Scunthorpe team.

The one thing that the Promotion have shown is that they are not afraid to make changes and if things continue where we are losing matches at home then I think that we might just see a few if the right riders become available.

Thought I saw Mr Hall and his family on the 4th bend terraces near the pits. Josh failed to get the court order banning Richard from within 100 yards of him, it would seem !

I think the Tigers fans would welcome him as a home track specialist judging by the moaning on this site. Yeah, he may be a bit dodgy away, but most of the fans only care about what they see on a Thursday night at Owlerton.

Only 2 Tigers won a heat, 5 for Simon Stead and 1 for Leigh Lanham, and that is not good enough. As Spike Milligan used to say, "what are we going to do now, what are we going to do now". Can't really see anything can be done until next month's green sheets are issued and we know how many points are available. For me, Richard Hall would be a welcome addition for entertainment at Owlerton.

Couldn't agree more.

Sheffield's promotion traditionally has a reputation for standing by its riders, but how long will they persevere with under-performers? I got a slating on this forum for suggesting that they should be on the phone to Argentina inviting Facu to return, but there's no doubt on last night's showing that he would be a more-than-adequate replacement for any one of four riders.

If this were the end of the season, there's no way the promoters would be offering new contracts to numbers 2 to 6, so why don't they grasp the nettle and make some decisions NOW about the inevitable rebuilding? Disappointing as it may seem, heads will have to roll if Sheffield is to salvage anything from this season.

Is Compton not at least riding to his average he will never be the rider he was but IMO overall he is at least doing the job he was brought in for scoring 6+ and helping the younger team members,Prehaps the manager better dust off his Kav's and try and pull things together as a stop gap ,Hall is not the answer IMO to hit and miss and always has his eye on Longtracking .

I would say riders get more advantage from knowing the Scunny track. Sheffield riders and all the other teams riders can be seen practicing at Scunny. Us fans are forever saying our lads don't have much track advantage. however they do have more track time themselves riding for us. which is a bonus for them! Pointless making excuses. A rider is either down on confidence or having a spot of machine probs. It happens!

The best time to make changes will be when we get the new set of averages then we know what we have got exactly to play with.At the moment I would expect Nielsen to make way and proctors average to drop so probably 6.5 ish.Who can we get for that ? Poole would possibly drop to reserve so that would surely be a shot in the arm for him.If he cant turn his season round from there then he has to go.We really need proctor to step it up.Hes getting plenty of meetings lately so he cant be using that excuse now for poor form.As for last night the result wasn't a shock,i just think it was stupid taking scunny on while we a rider short and out of form.Oh well lets move on and hope for better things to come.
