Shale Searcher
You're right, riders have got into the habit of only riding in fine weather... The riders that ride virtually every night of the week a're probably not going to miss a UK payday once a week because it's rained off, they'll still get their ex's paid and whatever payment they have agreed with their promoters... Years ago, when riders only rode twice a week, perhaps 3 times if lucky, couldn't afford to lose 50% / 33% of their income, if Darcy Ward or NKI miss a meeting here for a rain off, they'll only lose 14% / 16% of their weekly income, easily make it up in Poland/Sweden/Denmark/Russia that week.... SteveLyric2
Rain-off tickets from last night's abandoned meeting can be used at any remaining Poole 2014 EL home fixture for the admission price of £4 for Adults/£3 concessions/Children-Free!! E I Addio
We're constantly told these are highly skilled motorcyclists, so prove it! Really? Have you got any links to show we are "constantly" told that ? All I seem to read on here are comments about over-paid foreigners wobbling round at the back not that they are highly skilled. We get your general point but exaggerations devalue the point being made. I am not sure riders are always keen to have a meeting off. It's more that these days people a quick to complain but when meetings go ahead under dodgy conditions nobody really mentions the point. I don't know what the track was like at Poole as I wasn't there but I don't think you can generalise. Bottom line is that rain-offs are always a difficult call, sometimes they get it right and sometimes they get it wrong.
bluejigger
Barry Briggs had the perfect answer to riding in the rain on wet tracks - get out in front and stay there. He was always the cleanest rider at the end of the meeting !
Shale Searcher
It seems to me that the riders who have multiple commitments, especially those who ride in Poland, Sweden, Denmark and possibly other Countries and who ride 5/6 sometimes 7 nights a week are the riders least likely to want to race in less than perfect conditions here.... As I said in another post, in those scenarios, their earnings from UK meetings must be the smallest of their wage packets, so why risk 14% - 16% of their weekly income by riding in less than perfect conditions, and picking up an injury that stops them then earning the other 84% - 86% of weekly income.. The lesser riders (no disrespect intended) who only ride in the UK cannot afford to lose maybe half there weekly income (Leigh Lanham for example) he's working in the family chip shop business to make ends meet.... E I Addio
Except when he came up against Craven and Fundin. To be fair, Briggo did win one of his four World Titles in the worst conditions it's ever been run , if you look at the film of it, tipping it down with rain and sawdust everywhere. Far worse than any conditions we have seen an EL meeting run for many a year.. And he did it on an 15 point max when nobody else scored more tan about 11. One of the great performances of speedway history. Wish I had been there to see it.

He told us he had the answer later too with his 'dirt deflectors'.. which he told us would help solve the issue of rain offs as riders would be able to see. Hasn't turned out that way has it.. still, he's creaming off the money.

Ah yes, that famous oracle of speedway expertise and unadulterated verbal diarrhoea Nigel "Woffy Woffy Woffy" Pearson. I guess if he says so it must be right. I guess if he says so it must be right. TBF, I was being slightly facetious in my comments. My point stands though, it rains and they want to call things off. Or they say let the tractor go out for a bit and they feck it up! Honestly not convinced taking a tractor out after it's rained is the answer. It's just rained, you have quite an even, consistent covering of water. Take a tractor out and you just have slurry unevely placed all over the track. The rain-offs are more to do with promoters and/or the riders.
