Handicap Restarts?

Recommended Posts

One of the greatest frustrations in Speedway is seeing your rider leading only for someone else to fall off and we all know what happens in the restart - they usually trail in third.

How about giving riders some credit for where they were in the original race and start from gate, 10 metres and 20 metres depending on the order at the time of the stoppage.

It could also get away from the need to award so many races and give the fans a bit more entertainment.

Just a thought.

Sounds a good idea but what about gate positions? Even when it's just one rider starting from 15 mtrs back he has to have the outside gate so confusion could reign.

Now that's what I call a great idea!

Shouldn't think the gates would be too much of a problem as the three remaining riders would have a 'staggered' start with more room to manoeuvre.

Decent idea, it would certainly help to stop the tactical lay downs, where a rider falls, looks up to see his teammate on the wrong end of a 5-1. Normally when that happens, and there`s a rerun you can guarantee the rider who was leading will be at the back.

One problem though, if a rider was literally right on the back wheel of the rider in front, and there was a rerun, I think a 10m handicap is a bit to much of a penalty.

Like it but I think 10 metre gaps may be to large. 10 metres is tough when a rider touches the tapes so would be extremely harsh on a rider who wasn't at fault for the restart, especially if they were right on the back wheel of the rider in front.

5 metre gaps may be better as it's enough of a start for the leading rider but also enough for the others to really get their teeth into chasing down those in front
