Phil Collins Ideas In This Weeks Speedway Star (may 10th 2014)

Of course the possibility of change would difficult or impossible to do this is" speedway" were talking about after all that appears to adopt all the self distructing changes and non that would help it in regards to saving the sport or it's participants money.Won't waste too much time on this subject but as was said there could be a gradual move to phase out the present machinery over say a max 3yrs ANYTHING is possible if the parties involved are remotely willing to change .

I haven't read Phil Collins article, but reducing costs, all round, has to be the way forward to try and get speedway growing again. Perhaps a way to introduce the new engines, would be to insist that existing engines are restricted to a certain power output. In other words, reduced to a similar output to the new engines.

there isn't currently a will TWK but they can't bury their heads in the sand for ever

 

even promotors must realise that if machinery costs were lower riders would need less pay and they could make more profit

What we have at the moment is a long time manufacturer that was on the brink of closure,but is now at the moment saved.So that tells us there isn't much money in making speedway engines.What we have are speedway riders who spend quite a bit on engines,but also spend more maybe on getting those engines tuned.The people making money out of the sport are the top riders and the top tuners.It doesn't seem like the engine manufacturers are making much.So if you make engines cheaper will the manufacturers make more profit?Will the riders and promoters pocket the money saved or will the riders spend it on more tuning etc?

I remember Phil telling me some time ago that the reason he packed in speedway was because of the tracks getting slicker making it harder to race and pass, don't remember him mentioning cost. I wonder should the emphasis be on the track prep/surface not the engines.

Matchless had a speedway engine back in the sixties.

 

Bill Landels of Edinburgh was a works rider for them.

 

It was pretty crap though!!

There is an advert and picture in "the speedway star" Nov19th 1965 for the "new speedway engine from Matchless" based on the G85CS trophy winning engine, an all alloy unit as used in the Rickman Mettise, These engines are still being manufactured in Holland for classic scrambles

I'm sure All leagues -including Poland Sweded and Denmark could introduce a standard engine formula.

It's not just the UK that needs to reduce costs but the sport seems to be run for a few riders prepared to pay zillions for

Machines and tuning leaving the rest to try and compete.

 

I think the quicker the UK sets a 'different' agenda to the Euro teams then League racing might survive.

It's nice having the World Champion coming from the UK but what has it done for sport here.?

Most forms of motor sport have reduced the costs involved but at the same time they have mid/long term plan & not speedway's lets make the rule's in November for 4 months time.
