Scunthorpe Scorpions Vs Plymouth Devils (pl) - Sunday, April 27th (3pm)

BUSY WEEK FOR SCORPIONS

FLUIDAIR POWER Scunthorpe Scorpions entertain old rivals Plymouth Devils at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Sunday (3pm), in a busy week that sees the club involved in three Premier League meetings in four days.

The Scorpions compete in two away meetings, at Ipswich tonight (Thursday) and Rye House on Saturday.

The clash between the Scorpions and Devils at Scunthorpe on Sunday is followed by a National League fixture between the Scunthorpe Stags and the King’s Lynn Young Stars.

The Scorpions are actually top of the Premier League table at the moment – having defeated reigning champions Somerset 46-44 in the only PL fixture so far this year!

With another three PL fixtures in the next few days, the Scorpions have the chance to steal a march on their rivals.

Scunthorpe promoter Rob Godfrey said: “We’ve got a good chance of taking some good points from this week’s meetings.

“I’m not going to set a points target, because it’s been very unpredictable so far this season. In the League Cup, nearly everyone dropped points at home at one point or another.

“The Premier League promises to be a wide-open, competitive league in 2014, which is good for every team in the league.

“We’ve gone for a horses-for-courses policy regarding the guests for the injured Anders Mellgren this week.

“Leigh Lanham used to ride for Ipswich, so we’ve book him for the meeting there, and likewise with Pontus Aspgren on Rye House on Saturday.”

At the moment, it seems likely that the Scorpions will utilise rider replacement for the visit of the Plymouth Devils on Sunday. R/R scored paid 10 against Newcastle at the EWR on Good Friday.

Any Scunthorpe vs Plymouth clash always has plenty of spice.

The two clubs battled for the silverware at Conference Level in both 2006 and 2007, with a Scorpions team led by Tai Woffinden - now the World Champion - and Josh Auty nearly always coming out on top.

Sunday’s fixture sees the return of Plymouth’s Kalle Katajisto to the Eddie Wright Raceway, who suffered neck injuries at the track last season.

Ben Barker is the No 1 for the Devils. Last year, the breathtaking duels between him and Josh Auty, when Barker was riding for Ipswich, had to been seen to be believed.

Sunday’s adult admission price for the double-header is £17. It’s just £2 more than a single Premier League meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway, for 15 extra heats of action.

The circuit rightfully has won the award, several times, for being the best racetrack in the Premier League, so a full and exciting day of racing is ahead.

Admission prices for Sunday:

Adult: £17.00
Student/OAP: £15.00
Child (10 – 17): £5.00
Child (0 – 9) Free (accompanied by paying adult)
Family Ticket £39 (2 adults, 2 Children 10-17)
Match Programme: £1.00
Expected teams for Sunday (English unless stated):

FluidAir Power Scunthorpe Scorpions: 1. Rider replacement for Anders Mellgren (Sweden), 2. David Howe, 3. Thomas Jørgensen (Denmark), 4. Ashley Birks, 5. Josh Auty, 6. Matt Williamson, 7. Ryan Douglas (Australia).

Looks like the home fans are looking forward to this Rob, with all the postings they're making!!

It's unusual for nobody to pass any thoughts on what might, or might not happen.

I reckon the Scorpions will emerge victors, but Plymouth are no mugs, and they'll put up a good fight.

Does anybody local reading this, no what the weather forecast is for tomorrow afternoon please?

Ta ever so much.

Local forecast is similar to todays, that is sunshine and showers- although all the showers seemed to have missed us today. EWR drains well and dries out quickly so unless it persists it down, it will be game on.

I'm about to leave home, even though the weather looks very suspect here. Hopefully the speedway will be on up there, failing that I'll have to find a good pub in the Scunny/Lincoln area and treat my wife to a meal!! Oh dear, hope we go hungry.

Devils = a pretty impressive 3 man team!!

1. Ben Barker - 2, 3, 6!, 3, 0 = 14
2. R/R for Kyle Newman - (BR - 0, KK - 0, RJ - 2, RB - 0) = 2
3. Roland Benko - 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 = 0
4. Rasmus Jensen - 2, 4!, 2, 1, 2', 2 = 13+1
5. Sam Simota - 1, 0, 2', 0 = 3+1
6. Kalle Katajisto - 3, 0, 1, 1', 3, 2, 3 = 13+1
7. Ben Reade - 0, 0, 0 = 0

Usual good quality EWR meeting :approve: which would have been much closer if Newman had ridden.

Douglas impressive again, Benko deserved more, Birks and Jorgensen a concern.

What they had two tactical rides to get them back in. Who is worried about Tommy and Cap'n Birks not me? TJ at reserve will be mega points for him. I am more worried about daylight track drying out and losing what little home advantage we have on every Sunday and Bank Holiday meeting, looking forward to usual Friday night race nights. First and foremost I must say that in a couple of previous postings I've made on the BSF, I've been very critical regarding the gentleman behind the microphone (in referee's box), saying things that maybe I shouldn't have done. These were caused by my frustration of not being able to hear what he was saying, when everything else was audible over the PA system, especially the magnificent performances of Rob Godfrey. I have to say here and now, that yesterday, everything was spot on, but what really impressed me was the fact that the announcer, whose name I don't know, requested that I go up into the box to speak with him, to see if he'd been any clearer.

He didn't have to do that, and the fact that he did, has earned my utmost respect and admiration. You're a true gentleman sir, and I thank you very much indeed.

As for the meeting, WOW, WOW, WOW, what a fabulous show from both sides, on what has got to be one of the best race circuits in the country, particularly this season. Yes, there were some lesser performances from a couple of riders, but it's a team sport, and you win or lose as such.

Thank you to EVERYONE, who made it such an enjoyable afternoon, apart from whoever ordered that blooming cold weather again, does it ever get warm in that part of the country.

It will almost certainly be my final visit of 2014 to the Eddie Wright Raceway due to varying reasons, but what a memory to depart with.

Good luck for the remainder of the campaign, one which of course is going to see you end up as Premier League Champions, because Rob Godfrey said so....haha!!!

The Devils were a 3 man team but not impresive. I expected more from Simota as he was a rider i mentioned last year as a temporary replacment for David. On that performance, thank god he didn't.

As has been mentioned before, Rob has set this team up so anyone of the top 6 could ride at no1 during the season(awaiting Mellgrens return from injury but we could get Klindt, short term, as he knows what we are about. The top 5 all recorded wins but only 2 last places between them & that is the solid scoring we need.

A good meeting which kept us entertained to the end but required the bowser to be used more frequently to keep a bit of moisture in the track & keep the dust down in the last few heats as the wind blew in from the east.

Considering it was Simota's first ever visit to the Eddie Wright Raceway it was an ok'ish performance. He may of scored 3 or 2+1 in heat 13 to add to his points total, if he hadn't been stuffed by his own team mate in the first turn !!!!!! It was good for his average thou
