Speedway Pubs

Recommended Posts

Was funny though . This irate Geordie said to him " think you're in the wrong pub pal " . We managed to explain things before it got silly  . Happened to him again , wearing the same top , in the New Barrack Tavern in Sheffield ( a Sheffield Wednesday pub )

Recommendations for a few before heading to Newcastle Speedway would be Cumberland Arms,Free Trade Inn and Cluny, all in Byker and all real ale pubs. ;)

Stayed at the Heart in Hand a couple of times. Landlord's a bit of a misery guts but he makes a top breakfast, serves a very good pint of real ale and his rooms are spotless.

The speedway pub used to be The Gunners at Ellesmere Port. Its still there, but I don't think its called that any more, nor does it have the speedway memorabilia.

is that the big geezer with the beard?, yeah bit of a miserable bugger. Good for Wiltshire Ham, Double Eggs and Chips.

Answer to the one at Poole is that there used to be the Tatnam but that is now a Co-op.........

The nearest now is the George on the roundabout in the town centre...........

RP

Gutted about the Tatnam. I served my apprenticeship in Sterte Avenue before the Holes bay road was built and spent many pay day lunchtimes in there. Used to be paid cash in those days. More often than not we would return to work and be sent home!

Pubs being taken over by supermarkets shouldn't be allowed!

One of my post footy haunts the Dolphin on Holdenhurst road is now a Tesco express. Like we haven't got enough of them!!

Paul, next time your down call into Station Rd Club or The Railway club if its open. Railway Club is just outside the ground about two mins on your right below the railway station, station rd club is left after the railway club and on your right hand side. Better and cheaper beer than spoons and only a five min walk to track!!

The Dolphin was always as rough as anything...........the nearest pub to me is now a good 20 minute walk and both leave a lot to be desired...........Gullivers at Kinson or the Kings Arms at Wallisdown..........even the Thatched House on East Howe Lane is now closed............

Used to be in the Tatnam a lot when I was younger..........well when you have an uncle who lives in St Margarets Road and your mother in law lives opposite where else would you go...........though to be fair it really went downhill for about 5 years before it finally closed.........

That's the chap. It would help if he cracked a smile once or twice but I can't fault his pub. Excellent real ale, big breakfast and spotless rooms for a reasonable price - and you can walk to the track.

I can recommend a few other places to stay if anyone is interested.

avoid the Fosse at all costs mate... :)

When I first went to Newcastle in 2004 I used to go in the Fosse every time, usually to watch the football.

The beer was good, the company as good and on occasion I was asked to help finish off a buffet (and didn't need to be asked twice).

When I told a few pals at Brough, they were horrified. It is, apparently, one of the roughest pubs in Newcastle.

Following on from the " best and worst " thread , what about us guys who dont bother with food at the speedway .

Glasgow - the Ashfield Bar is pretty much like the bar in Star Wars , avoid at all costs . Horseshoe Bar in the city centre then taxi to the track is much better .

Edinburgh - not really a pub near the track . There is one on the road on the walk from Armadale cross , but you walk in there and all the locals turn round and stare at you . Some not bad pubs in Bathgate though

Berwick - loved the Brewers Arms and the Queens Head , but the Black and Gold club is the perfect speedway bar

Workington - the bar at the track suffices , i do go into a Wotherspoons in the town centre which is ok . We do our drinking in Cockermouth beforehand

Newcastle - the Fossway is fine , unless you are my mate Alan who went in there with a Glasgow Tigers top which unfortunately had red and white vertical stripes

Redcar - no pub nearby , but the track bar is good

Sheffield - just love the New Barrack Tavern across the road and along a wee bit from the track

Peterborough - good Harvester pub at the entrance to the Showground , but a bit of a hike to the track from there

Somerset - excellent CAMRA pub in West Huntspill called the Cross Keys , Bristol Bridge near the track is good too

Plymouth - stopped at the Premier Inn near the track so just used their bar

Rye House - The Rye pub is the daddy of the PL pubs

Ipswich - stopped in a Premier Inn next to a marina and the pub next door was good . At the track though it doesnt open till 45 mins before the start and shuts bang on heat 15

Scunthorpe - we were in a pub in the town centre which had signs about having the right to search for weapons  was a bit of a dive . No pub near the track , but the bar there is ok

Swindon - Cold Harbour across the road is superb

Leicester - good pub in the wee shopping place along from the track , wee bar in the car park too is ok

Poole - couldnt see a pub near the track , but the bar under the stand is ok

Birmingham - Wotherspoons a short walk from the track is a decent boozer

Coventry - no pub near the track , but the Cocked Hat pub next to the Premier Inn i stopped at was good

Belle Vue - Snooker Club across the road was three pints for a fiver last time we were there

The George Hotel just up the Road from Poole stadium is ok, the Shar of persia up Longfleet road is good for meals, the New Inn on Wimborne road about 3/4 mile from the stadium is also ok, and half a mile further down at Fleetbridge theres a Harvester, and a bus stop right outside, which will cost you a quid to the stadium, which stops just past the stadium entrance.. And if you walk into poole Town centre which is just across the road from the George you have a host of Cafe's and Take Aways. You also have a Holiday Inn just passed the Dolphin Centre and plenty of B@B's in the Area. Then you have Poole Quay and the pubs through the Town centre which also do meals, and if you like, you can sit outside enjoy the view over our amassing Harbour and take in some decent, fresh air... Hope that helps with your Poole situation..

Oh do keep up..............we have already done the George to death..........

RP

Still open but I think it's reverted back to its original name The Sloop. Bit of a step from the stadium though if I'm thinking of the right place by the college?

Correct..............always has been the Sloop to most people...........

The only person who's done the George to death is you. You've only mentioned it several times!!

used to be my local.... It's ok really but I suppose everywhere is if you know people.... The pub I'm a regular at, looks like a prison camp from the outside but it's a very good pint and the people are salt of the earth... It's called the scrogg ( has a bad reputation but that stems from yesteryear ) and is about 2 miles from the track :)
