CITY GEARBOXES Coventry Mercia-Vikings open their 2014 MDL season with the visit of Kings Lynn to Brandon tonight.

The MDL match follows the Elite League Coventry v Kings Lynn clash and features two 125cc races involving the Thompson twins , Dan and Joe, along with Sam Wright and Steven Whitehouse.

With new signing Conor Dwyer out with a broken collarbone sustained guesting for Scunthorpe against The Storm, the Vikings give a debut to 19 year local lad Tom Sipos --a product of the Coventry Training Schools.

CITY GEARBOXES Coventry Mercia-Vikings 24 Kings Lynn Lightning 11

 

The CITY GEARBOXES Vikings started their 2014 Midland Development League season in fine style racing to an emphatic 24-11 win over Kings Lynn at Coventry.

Without the injured Conor Dwyer the Vikings gave a debut to 19 year old local lad Tom Sipos, a product of the Coventry training schools . The youngster started his career in the best possible way with a paid win in his first outing but crashed out in his second ride injuring his wrist.

Things started badly though for the visitors when Adam Kirby pulled out on the first lap before team mate Layne Cupitt , a Tai Woffinden protégé, crashed leaving the Vikings duo of Ryan Terry-Daley and Sipos to race to a 5-0 opening heat win.

The Lightning shared the spoils in heat 2 with diminutive former road racer Alec Wright taking the chequered flag followed home by another Vikings debutant Adam Sheppard and home skipper John Markham.

Wright took his second heat win in the re-run third heat after Sipos had crashed heavily into the air fence on the second bend and the 4-2 heat win for the visitors brought the scores to 10-7.

Adam Kirby fell in the 4^th heat and was excluded and in the re-run Vikings duo Terry-Daley and Sheppard took maximum points to put their side seven up at 15-8.

With Sipos out of the meeting Sheppard took his place and raced to his maiden heat win in Vikings colours with skipper Markham team riding him home. The 5-1 heat success put the home side in an unassailable position at 20-9.

Heat 6 saw a tiring Sheppard take his third ride in succession whilst the unbeaten Terry-Daley and Wright clashed with the home man securing a 9 point maximum by defeating the Kings Lynn rider.

Thankfully Tom Sipos has only a bruised and sore hand after his crash .

There were also two 125cc races held with Joe Thompson unable to ride after a minor operation during the week but he lent his twin brother Dan his engine , which he rode to two wins over Sam Wright and Stephen Whitehouse.

The Vikings KO Cup clash at Stoke on Sunday has been called off with no new date as yet. Their next meetings are at home at Brandon next Friday v Long Eaton Invaders and away on Easter Sunday (20^th) against table topping Milton Keynes at Mildenhall after the Fen Tigers v Coventry Storm National league clash.
