Sheffield V. Scunthorpe 10/04/14 Lc

Recommended Posts

Please don't hesitate to tell me if I'm wrong, but if the track was unridable for heats one and two why did the the winner of heat one post the best time of the night by more than two seconds? It appeared to me that the Scunthorpe riders came prepared to go out and get on with it whilst the Sheffield team just weren't ready for it for some reason. Vissing and Douglas attacked the track, whereas Stead and Compton didn't. He who dithers - doesn't win!

Auty was so much faster than everyone else, so didn't have to take any unnecessary risks! A good night for the Scorpions and an extremely bad one for the Tigers!

On form a comfortable home win but from a Scunny perspective let's hope that this is the start of better things.

Obviously the League Cup has gone for us now but any confidence we can take from tonight will be welcome leading up to Sunday's league meeting with Somerset.

Safe meeting for all please.

An appalling performance from a Sheffield team that seems to have become intoxicated by its own (so far unproven) potential. Sheffield seemed so convinced that victory was assured that they didn't bother turning up until heat 9. Quite clearly certain riders had not prepared their machines to a competitive standard, their gating was atrocious and, with Sheffield riders finishing last in eleven of the fifteen heats, they've forgotten the speedway axim that victories are built on NOT finishing fourth.

By the halfway stage I was beginning to wonder if we'd EVER see a Sheffield heat winner because they simply didn't look to be up for it.

As I've stated in other topics in this forum, the much-heralded appointment of Joe Screen as manager may not be the master stroke that some have claimed. On last night's showing, the learning-curve needs to be a very steep one if he's to produce team results in the near future: as I've said before, the jury is very much still out on the wisdom of his appointment.

A thirty-minute hold-up after heat two to prepare a competitive surface is unforgiveable. I've said it before: the paying punters don't fork out their hard-earned cash to watch the tractor go round. There can be no excuse for a track that is a danger to race on: they've had all week to prepare it and the weather has not been an issue. Someone needs to get their finger out. The patience of supporters is not inexhaustible. It's the racing hold-ups that ultimately will drive away the paying public; if it's not rain it's the sun dazzling the riders, and if it's not the sun it's interminable delays for repairs to the fence. Now we have the new impediment of under-prepared racing surface! Is there no end to the excuses for race officials to repair to the pits for a cosy cuppa while the customers twiddle their thumbs on the terraces?

The new promotion clearly has a lot to learn and, unless they present us with a team that is able and willing to compete and an organization that is able to deliver, time will run out and so will the crowd.

So everyone is complaining about how long the meeting took as a result of the track being unrideable and last week the air fence being fixed.

Jeez guys you dont half moan alot!

1. Would you rather the riders came out and injured themselves?

2. The air fence is there for a reason...

Call yourself fans? I suggest you all look in the mirror and remind yourselves you dont need to "waste" your money on the weekly speedway fix. Why dont you go to the casino next door and place a few bets instead?

To be honest with you, I can see this team going far as soon as the riders have had a few meetings to get there feet back on the ground. Your all acting like its half way through the season, when there has actually only been 2 home meetings so far!

How about getting behing the guys and cheering them on rather then moaning.

Talking to an ex rider the other day and fans seriously dont understand how hard it is for the riders to come out every week in front of you moody so called fans. Give them a break (and also the track staff)!!

Rant over!

Sheffield fan through and through.

Bit harsh blaming the promotion for the track preparation - Graham has been preparing it for donkey's years and can normally be relied upon to provide a smotth and fast surface. Compton said that on the track walk they all thought that it was fine. Think we just got beaten by a team that nearly all hit form on the right night - when was the last time David Howe was unbeaten in his first 3 rides anywhere? when was the last time Auty had a decent meeting at Sheffield? when was the last time somebody turned up with a reserve like Douglas?

It was only when Compton caught a crab in Heat 2 that the track was deemed a problem. In these circumstances it's always the home team that let's matters get into their head whereas the away team just rides a track as they see it on the night.

After the week from hell for Scunthorpe, Sheffield were unlucky to catch most of the Scorpions on good form for the first time this season.

I agree. The track man has been there years. They've put the money in for drains and shale. Short of doing it themselves what can they do? Same with the team. They've built a good team. We all know the team is good, unlike the last couple of years, but they failed to deliver last night for whatever reason. It's not ability so itust be mechanical or attitude. THATS where the promotion need to ask some questions . Hopefully it was a blip. The other thing is Scunthorpe are one of the best teams in the league on paper. They've started badly but unfortunately Auty hit form last night, and Ryan Douglas was just awesome! He didn't seem to mind the track! Just kept it wound on for 4 laps and passed our guys like they were stood still. A bad day at the office for Sheffield but I'm not slashing my wrists yet. The riders need to get their heads back on the racing and the Captain needs to lead from the front.

Who saw that one coming?

Great news for Scunny - maybe a few gremlins out of the way now although it was only one meeting. Let's hope for continuation of this form on Sunday.

For the Tigers - the fans seem very downbeat after one disappointing result although it does seem as though other factors played a part in their lack of enjoyment. I'm sure they will be OK going forward.

Speedway - don't you just love it!

Can't see Douglas being at reserve for long once the rolling averages kick in. He was without doubt my 'rider of the meeting' last night. Another Aussie following in the footsteps of Crump, Holder, Ward and all the others before them. Can see him putting at least 2.5 points on his average if he maintains that form.

hope our new promotion are listening because last night was a shambles and it wont take long to lose the fans we have gained

From what has been posted on this thread it appears the key man behind the new promotion (Mr Clifton-James to those in the know) thinks all was all right last night!

why was track dangerous to race on ...times seem ok???

Not for the first time at Sheffield (the infamous 2004 PLRC certainly springs to mind), it sounds like the track, especially in the earlier heats, had to be ridden aggressively because it was so grippy ... in those circumstances, you're bound to get a combination of quick times from the riders with good-enough aggressive skills to generate stacks of speed from all the grippiness and crashes/complaints from the riders who can't cope with (or don't like) such a track.

Either Howe or Jorgensen will be though. The way Scunny have built they are always going to have 1 strong reserve at least.
