Tsunami
Wasnt it Mauger who was the first to arrive with two bikes? Honestly, just something I remember reading from BSF earlier... When he first arrived he had no bikes. Together with his mechanical Rolf, he bought up decent second hand bikes and then made up the best couple of bikes he could afford, and I believe slept in his flat nosed Bedford van, cadging rides anywhere he could. He worked harder at getting established than anyone else and wanted to be the best. When the Esso first came on the scene, teammate Alan Butterfield was the first to have one, Mauger would ride at least 1 ride in a team match on it to get used to it. Unfortunately his scores were often something like 3303, till he got more used to it and then he stuck with the new bike.

But would it be possible to do that today with the cost of modern equipment and transport costs? How long could you survive learning the trade? FAST GATER
But would it be possible to do that today with the cost of modern equipment and transport costs? How long could you survive learning the trade? IMO yes they can learn their trade ,we can go on forever about costs how to cut them or how to justify them but the bottom line is if they want it bad enough most ( not all i admit) will get there in the end.Riders start off in s/way for anything but the money ,they just want track time and to ride a s/way bike as fast as possible and emulate one or more of their heroes .The money comes later when the demands of life and earning aliving from a former hobby or past time kick in .
