methanoladdict
Hi, sorry if this has appeared before. Was just wondering how many riders today use castrol r and when it stopped being the norm. Is it all fully synthetic now? If I go to my local track this year will I get any hint of the lovely smell? Thanks.

Thanks. Only if you have a strong sense of smell. Sadly that is another part of Speedway that is vanishing - like the noise.
methanoladdict
Agree, the noise was great too. When you say if you have a strong sense of smell, does that mean the new oils still smell the same, just not as strong? Is anyone still using castrol R, or M, which I'm told smells the same? I may be wrong - BUT - I believe it is against the Rules. Bl**dy 'Elf and Safety' again I think.

Modern speedway bikes are no longer total loss oil systems so the smell is not as strong. The used oil that dripped out onto the track (later on into an oil catcher) was made the very strong smell

Long Eye
I may be wrong - BUT - I believe it is against the Rules. Bl**dy 'Elf and Safety' again I think. You are wrong TWK. Castrol R & M is still widely used although it is more of a synthetic blend now. Plenty of other oils used are Castor based as well.

Just wondering. R40 racinv castor is not outlawed in the slightest, its really just that there are far better synthetic and semi synthetic oils about nowadays that castrol r has become almost obsolete in the sport

Tsunami
You are wrong TWK. Castrol R & M is still widely used although it is more of a synthetic blend now. Plenty of other oils used are Castor based as well. Some road motorcyclists must still use Castor based oil with their road bikes.. When a hot bike goes past me, I often have a "Bisto" moment smelling their fumes.

rusky
On the Simon Mayo drivetime show on Radio 2 tonight, the Friday night sports fixture was vintage scrambling. The guy who was talking about it was quite keen to emphasis the sound of the 500 singles, and the SMELL OF CASTROL R. He was saying these were the 2 things that people would enjoy if they came to watch.
