Guest Posted March 31, 2014 Report Share Posted March 31, 2014 I was looking through my old programmes and was surprised on how many national league meetings i attended.I always enjoyed watching that league and see some great entertainment over the years what a decent product it was.Who were people's all time top five riders? and another top five who were they're favourites here goes.Didnt include Lee,Carter, both Crump's and Tiger Louis. 1.Joe Owen( the king) also did well in the BL 2.Tom Owen. 3. John Jackson. 4.Steve Lawson. 5. Laurie Etheridge. My favourite all time five riders in the NL were Malc Holloway, Mark Courtney, Pete Jarman,Paul Woods and Bob Humphreys. I would just like to clarify that the riders listings I have given in previous messages are FAVOURITES and in no way meant to be read as a ratings list. It's somehow become jumbled in transmission? Charlie Monk won the 1965 Internationale but did not top the averages. You will find the averages at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1965_British_Speedway_League I was there to see Charlie Monk win the Internationale at Wimbledon and no I can't remember him smiling when he accepted the trophy. Apparently he rode that morning in an Exeter v Glasgow match, which had an 11am start. He scored 14 points in a 46-32 defeat before heading to London for the meeting at Wimbledon that evening. mervjankefanclub Posted May 5, 2014 Report Share Posted May 5, 2014 (edited) I think it's the circumstances surrounding Steve Lawson's loyalty that make him stand out that bit more. The Tigers were absolutely dire throughout the mid-80s and Steve fought a lone battle on away trips, quite often scoring more than the rest of the team put together. He could so easily have walked away and joined any team in the NL, but he stuck by the Stripes and for that every Tigers fan will be forever grateful. A nicer guy you couldn't wish to meet either and he was immaculately turned out season after season, some effort for a busy farmer. Hardly ever had an EF and probably only fell off unaided less than ten times throughout his career, a true professional. I think it's safe to say if it wasn't for Steve and Jimmy Beaton the Tigers could so easily have went under during those desperate times at Craighead Park........and to think he almost signed for Edinburgh before plumping for Glasgow ............as a wee aside I was just a kid when he came to Glasgow in 1978 and for the first few meetings I thought the announcer was saying Steve AUSTIN, so I thought he was some sort of 6 million dollar man Edited May 5, 2014 by mervjankefanclub 4 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

FAST GATER Posted May 7, 2014 Report Share Posted May 7, 2014 Joe Owen ,John Jackson ,Steve Lawson ,Tom Owen and Pete Jarman Imo there was very little between Jacko and Joe except that Joe would just go to the edge a little bit more than JJ.I think that both of them were exciting to watch and had very different styles ,Joe using his incredible natural strength and JJ having the balance and delicate throttle control on the bike I have rarely witnessed outside the company of Mauger & co.
