Rivalries

Recommended Posts

After reading some of the banter between Glasgow and Edinburgh, it got me thinking what other rivalries are there in British speedway?

Who? and why?

Bit of fun before the season starts.

My team Somerset is obviously Plymouth just purely for south west pride in the premier.

Lynn and Ipswich was one of the fiercest in the sport, particularly on Good Friday with home & away clashes. Been on hold since 2002 though and for some reason the Lynn and P'boro clashes were never quite as tense despite it being a geographically closer rivalry.

King's Lynn's main rivals are Peterborough & Ipswich. Reason is they're close and they're shyte. Always plenty of banter when the 2 teams clash (not always friendly). Always check for their results and love it when they get battered. It's just a great shame they're both in different leagues. One thing is certain though, I'd never want one of these tracks to close down.

In terms of rivalry in the Elite League today, the only little bit of bitterness remains with Birmingham but that has only filtered over from both our Premier League days. Some decent clashes and war of words between clubs management.

Other than that it's all hugs and kisses

The carrot crunchers from Compost Corner may be enjoying their time in the the sun at the moment but after so many years in the shadow of the mighty Witches they are still as pale as a snowmans ghost!

Scottish banter is the best banter 🚲💨

Coventry and Leicester always used to be deadly rivals. That battle can now commence again this season after 30 years. :)

The lack of vocal support and non-segregation of supporters in this country definitely detracts from the ability to create proper rivalries in my opinion, it's just too nice, there needs to be a bit of bite to it and I've yet to see it anywhere really in the 8 or so years I've been watching the sport. It may well have been different in the past but it certainly isn't the case now.

Going to watch the Brummies at Coventry and Wolves doesn't feel a whole lot different to going to watch them at Lakeside or Swindon for me despite the bigger number of travelling fans. Stick us all in one section and the atmosphere would improve tenfold.
