Vince
Why one sided? current riders would adjust to the rules if we reverted back ( I know there is no chance ) but flyers should not be made to lose out if the tapes are not broken or touched .I never enter into old riders being better than the current crop but Mauger &co would have been the same riders in this era as they were in their own.My point being that he would adapt to rules and use them to his advantage and spend half his life having make restarts by the way the sport is run by "refs " these days. One sided because under the old system starts were very unfair and it was very rare to get 4 riders leaving at the same time, something that happens far more often now in my opinion. My solution to stopping rolling and therefore lessen the mistake of good gates being penalised is simple. Once the start marshall has positioned the riders anybody moving backwards by so much as an inch is sent back to the penalty line. Then nobody can get a roller and if the tapes aren't touched the start has to be good.

I respect your views but I have no issue with rollers I like to see movement on the line and accept that is just my preference ,I don't want to see four static riders IMO movement adds another dimension to the sport .The sport needs to be unpredictable it needs the personalities to have their chance to display there characters not be totally sanitised .I do apologies but the starting rules in s/way (changed from the 70's ) is my main bone of contention and one of it's biggest faults IMO.
Mike.Butler
agreed. It certainly gave home fans the chance to boo the likes of Mauger when he got a flyer....I hadn't realised until you said how sanitised it has become..you're absolutely right..speedway needs some villains to get the atmosphere going..
BWitcher
Oh dear.. the relics are out again harking back to the 'good old days'. The old way of starting was awful. It's awful even watching it now seeing riders roll into the tapes, back out again, in again, back out again. Awful. What is annoying now is when races are called back when someone makes a fantastic start. Quite simply, if the referee lets the tapes go, meaning he is happy no rider has moved backwards, then if a rider doesn't touch the tapes, let it go. agreed. The minute modern day speedway gets any form of villain they are castigated by all and sundry.. particularly the older fans!

Speedway is missing villains. It used to be great years ago when you had Riders like 'Crazy' Jack (Millen the Villain) Millen, Tony Childs, Taffy Owen - these were all characters that the Home Supporters loved but that the away were enraged by, due to their behaviour. It made for atmosphere. People would come along just to watch these 'Characters' sadly this side of things seems to be lost to the Sport. Like things I have alluded to on other Threads - most of the Riders are the same these days. Oh - I nearly forgot BW - I'm 69 in about two weeks time. I don't know whether THAT qualifies me as an "older fan" - but - I loved those characters, at least they were entertaining. BWitcher
Yes, looking back it does look awful but the current system is even worse. Endless reruns which are often unjustified either because nobody was actually moving or even worse the perpatrator was left at the gate and given a second chance, how stupid is that? Something in between is required. If it wasn't too costly to implement I would go for some sort of automatic random gate where the ref puts the green light on and a random timer releases the tapes. If nobody touches the tapes then off you go. Don't know how well it would work but something to consider and if it reduced the number of pointless restarts then everyone's a winner. Not disagreeing with you. It angers me every time a race is pulled back when someone has simply made a great start. Aaahhh!! That's better BW - I can't agree with that. Speedway is missing villains. What passed as being a character and 'entertainment' has long since changed.

ruffdiamond
if the tapes were made from 'bunjee cord',,, I bet the offenders would definately think twice about doing it again :-)
