racers and royals
I think I remember reading that Speedway in Japan was on tarmac tracks and because betting was such an important aspect of the sport there, the riders were kept under lock and key for hours prior to meetings. iris123
Grachan is the expert on the sport in Japan. He has been there and seen it for himself. But i thought it was on concrete. Not sure. But i do remember as a youngster seeing some film of it at possibly the MCN stand at a London Motorbike show in Earl's Court.I seem to recall the riders came out on the back of a truck which drove them out on this massive track to their bikes. Was all very theatrical.I think this was preceeded by dirt tracks at some point though. Was also,i think the first time i saw Ice Speedway on screen

I've got no reason to treat someone differently because of their age thanks.

Guest
I wonder if Stewart Goodall is any relation to John Goodall N.Z. who rode for Sunderland for half a Season in 1971. He had the makings of a really good Rider - but left Sunderland under something of a cloud. Stewart Goodall is John Goodall's father. The Doctor...
Ian, (The White Knight) is a respected member of the forum with over forty years' experience of the sport and makes a strong contribution to the British section of the forum. He is a traditionalist who fights against things that he sees as wrong with the modern sport. He occasionally lets his enthusiasm get the better of him, but then nobody's perfect. He is an honest contributor to this forum. Some might not agree but there's plenty more who would back him, even if he does go on a bit - sometimes - bit like me as well, but then when you get on a bit this kind of thing happens, as I'm becoming painfully aware. Likewise John, (gustix) who bear in mind was founding editor of the Speedway Star SIXTY-TWO years ago in 1952 has his 'moments' but again is a genuine fan of speedway who has worked in for longer than the average member of this forum has been alive. I don't agree with him much of the time but his efforts over the years deserve some respect. It is said that you can judge a society by the way it treats its children - in many ways you can tell much more by seeing how they treat their weak and elderly. "The Doctor" by contrast is a negative, offensive poster who appears to have respect for no-one and the sooner the forum is rid of him the better. To admit that he is deliberately carrying out harassment of another forum member is not only against the terms of his membership of this forum but also against the terms of his contract with his Internet Service Provider. Some people come here to discuss, some to learn, some to share knowledge - some come here just to be unpleasant and upset others. Apologies for having to make this posting but sometimes you have to make a stand - and sometimes you lose the capacity to care for the consequences, but then unlike cowards such as "The Doctor" I don't have to hide my identity. Rob McCaffery. Excuse me Rob - for the second time in probably a month you've made this ridiculous statement that i'm hiding behind a username, and yet again i'll advise you that i've posted under my real name many many times. My name is Tom Elwood, for the umpteenth time - and i have at NO point admitted carrying out any harrassment of any user, so carefully read what i wrote before you throw around ludicrous accusations around about me breaching terms of contract with my internet provider - Ian has come up with that based on me simply stating that age doesn't play any part in how i treat someone - their actions do. So before you start getting all uppity about hiding behind usernames, get your facts straight please, it's getting boring having to correct you over and over. Besides Jimmy Ogisu, who rode in Australia and briefly the UK, there was also a Japanese woman rider Nanae Okamoto and she rode in Australia during 1964. I have an idea that she may also have appeared in New Zealand? Edited March 23, 2014 by Guest

To add to the previous message: I think that besides his Internationale appearance at Wimbledon Jimmy Ogisu also rode in the second-half of a meeting at Hackney on that visit. A Japanese speedway (not Autorace) rider Hideki Ota competed at meetings in California at one-time, no specifics as to when, but it would seem to have been the late 1960s. Guest
Brian Collins' excellent International Speedway website details these test matches as having taken place in Israel. Bavarian
Hideaki Ota is Japan's one and only active speedway rider of the 2000s. He rode in California for a few years and was last seen riding in a speedway meeting at Ivan Mauger's short lived Malaysian venture a few years ago. Malaysia is of course another speedway outpost. Some thought it could become a future stop-over for the SGP series, but sadly it did not take off and was all over after just one season.
