george.m
How refreshing is it to see a competition of this nature where the outcome wasn't rigged with an obvious high profile winner. Full marks to the MEN. Well done PC! Edited March 11, 2014 by george.m

g13webb
Could try Speedway General Discussions. Peter never rode EL. Cheek!!! He rode in this league when it was ' The Elite League' in the world. Now it's just a name of our top league, but it's not the best in the world anymore...... manchesterpaul
Not sure where to put this, but a great big well done to Peter, up against some big names also. http://bellevueaces.co/newsitem.aspx?id=1087 There was already a thread running in the General Discussions section http://www.speedway-forum.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=75836 It was more fitting for it to be there as i guess he received the award in the main due to his World Championship win which placed him in the consciousness of the general populace. Admittedly the speedway fans who voted for him would be aware of his feats over the years for his club and the breathtaking entertainment he gave week in week out. I remember posting in the Manchester Evening News when the awards were first ever mentioned the excitement and pleasure he gave to thousands of fans. Absolutely stunning victory for him when you see the full list of rivals for the award. Could try Speedway General Discussions. Peter never rode EL. That crossed my mind too
LagutaRacingFan
This is a genuine achievement, This is bigger than winning the world championship in the small world of speedway. This is a major award, Against the likes of George Best... wow!
stratton
This is a genuine achievement, This is bigger than winning the world championship in the small world of speedway. The White Knight
Who got the award for the 50's & 60's? I doubt there was one - BUT - if there was it would have to be another PC. Peter Craven, of course. :approve:

manchesterpaul
How refreshing is it to see a competition of this nature where the outcome wasn't rigged with an obvious high profile winner. Full marks to the MEN. Well done PC! To be honest George i don't think the MEN assisted Peter's win other than having to include him in the nominees list in one article. Peter Collins win was all the more creditworthy as he wasn't even mentioned in the original article in the Manchester Evening News. In a later article which stated that George Best had emerged as an early favourite the only mention of Peter was in the list of contenders and no actual comment about him. Incidentally the fans did him proud in the comments section as 19 of the 20 nominated Peter Collins Just to clarify the actual structure of the awards was; "Manchester Evening News readers will now get the opportunity to vote for the nominee they want to take home the sporting legend title for each decade. The winning legend for each decade will be revealed at the awards ceremony on 10th March in front of 400 guests. The event has been created by Manchester PR Consultancy BIRD for the We Love MCR Charity and the money raised will help the charity carry on supporting and improving the lives and opportunities of the people of Manchester."The campaign has been set up in conjunction with the Lord Mayor’s We Love MCR charity and aims to celebrate those who have left a sporting legacy in Manchester and raise vital funds for charity at the same time." Get what you're saying. Point I was making is they could have hindered his win for a more popular one.
