In fact last time I went to a speedway meet, Peter Collins was riding. So.. Finland has finally got a GP and we're all excited about that. I was just posting to say that if anyone is coming over for it and you need any help about getting to Tampere, let me know on here and I'll try my best to help. We are flying direct to Tampere from Stansted so I do not think we have any problems at the moment but will keep your offer in mind. We are assuming there is a bus from the airport into Tampere. We are staying at the Holiday Inn and it looks as though it is within walking distance of the stadium which is good.
racers and royals
Hi Matt. . We are staying at the Holiday Inn and it looks as though it is within walking distance of the stadium which is good. From Ryanair website Tampere Airport is situated 18 Km from Tampere city. There is a bus connection to the city centre, operated by Tokee; the journey time is 25 minutes and a ticket costs €6.00. Arriving passengers can buy their bus tickets to Tampere city centre from the airport information desk. Departing Passengers pay their bus tickets when bus is arriving to airport. Timetables online: http://www.airpro.fi/bus-schedules Edit with Ryanair changing the flight times I`m sure they will change the bus times to coincide with the revised arrival/departures. MattR
Hi! Plenty of buses to and from the airport http://tampereairport.com/to-from-tampere-airport Your hotel is indeed about 10 mins from the stadium. Tampere isn't a big place but has a good nightlife and everyone speaks good English. Just sent you a PM with my number if you're up for a coffee before the meet. We've got to get back afterwards and we're on motorbikes, so no beers unfortunately for us! Public transport planner http://joukkoliikenne.tampere.fi/en/ Tampere http://wikitravel.org/en/Tampere You have to try a real Finnish sauna whilst you're here. Wood-fired, not electric! http://www.visittampere.fi/activities/wellbeing/sauna
MattR
Try again.. Mods! My posts are going missing! So.. Your hotel is 10-mins' walk from the stadium. There are regular buses to and from the airport http://tampereairport.com/to-from-tampere-airport If you're arriving on Friday night, that means on Saturday morning you'll have time to : Rent a bicycle: http://www.tamperecitybike.fi/index.php And then go and check out a real wood-fired sauna and jump in the lake! http://www.visittampere.fi/place/821 Everyone speaks great English in Finland so you'll be fine! f-s-p
If you want to experience sauna at Tampere, you go to Rajaportin Sauna.
MattR
If you want to experience sauna at Tampere, you go to Rajaportin Sauna. Good idea. Then you've only got the railway lines and the dual carriageway to cross to get to the lake in your birthday suit.
f-s-p
Good idea. Then you've only got the railway lines and the dual carriageway to cross to get to the lake in your birthday suit.= ) Actually it's two of the three main east-west roads and the only railroad. But I wasnt going to dip in the lake, I was recommending the sauna. It's a public sauna, like Kauppi, but a history of around 100 years. Google it. I've been there enough times... It's no spa, it's a public sauna like no other. Never been to Kauppi sauna, but often read that the people attending are close to burning the whole building down while competing on "who da man" taking it... EDIT: and theres no beach there. Also they are building a tunnel nearby, so the water cant be that nice looking. Edited March 7, 2014 by f-s-p
MattR
Rajaportti looks the business! You should invite your foreign visitors to your city, F-S-P ;-)) In Helsinki there's the Kotiharjun Sauna in Kallio which is a great laugh, sitting outside on the street. http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/harjutori,sauna/Interesting

Ghostwalker
MattR, whats the weather like in Finland in May ? Also, how does the price of drink & food compare to England ? The weather in Finland in May is like for the rest of northern Europe very unpredictable. It could be anything from +12C and rain to +20 and sunshine. Cheers Matt Hi Matt Hope that life in Helsinki is good. Do they still have the Helsinki ex-pats v Stockholm e-pats cricket match in the summer in that park just north of the city centre? I got roped into that once in my youth/backpacking days lol I'll be with some friends (Mr & Mrs Brummiestormer) and doing the Finnish SGP a little differently to most. We are flying into Sweden on the Thursday, then going to see Gripana v Lejonen on the Thursday night before sailing into Helsinki on the Silja Line ferry on Friday night (arriving Sat morning). We are hiring a car to drive to Tampere before reversing the journey on the Sunday, and catching Indianerna v Elit Vetlanda on the Tuesday before flying home on the Wednesday. Be grateful if you can let us know if there is anything we need to know, e.g. important things like where there are Aldi / Lidl stores where we can top up our stocks of beer etc. Thanks Martin

uk_martin
Last time in Sweden (Malilla) we got some nice bottles of imported German Pils at Lidl, at what we would call "Lidl prices" rather than "Swedish prices". Obviously from the information above, they would have been 3.5% proof or less, but they tasted nice and we thought that they were very good value for money. Thanks for the tips though. €15 for 24 cans really would be a good deal, even in the UK! Would be happy with that. Doesn't the ferry stop off at Mariehamm? Are there advantages to using it's tax haven status for getting even cheaper beer?

Are there advantages to using it's tax haven status for getting even cheaper beer? I think that the ferry shop is tax free, because it stops at Åland. If you come over by night, I think the stop is just long enough to load/unload the locals with their cars. And Åland is not especially cheap, same to rest of Finland. I dont actually know what the beer price is at that ferry, it's possible to google it from their site. But I can name you shop that sells beer for 21 euros a case everyday, and thats the cheapest I know at Tampere. I have my beer from Tallinn for around 11 euros a case. There's a Lidl store not far from Ratina next to Sokos at Hallituskatu. lidl is a good choice for beer... EDIT: citymarket stores in Finland have made it their business to have an extensive selection of beer. The one near me has over 250 different foreign beers. But then its 6 euros for a pint of bottled London Pride. Edited March 18, 2014 by f-s-p
moomin man 76
If you are travelling on an overnight crossing from Stockholm to Helsinki, the stop over in Mariehamm isn't really an option, as the ferry is usually birthed up for no more than fifteen minutes (or at least it has been every time I have travelled on the ferry).
