Coventry Stadium Sold

Recommended Posts

It has been on the market for quite a while. It is a shame that bspa and someone like speedworth cannot find the money for a joint bid. Too much money leeches out of the sport without any planning for the future. Speedway should have a strong property portfolio instead 30 years of mismanagement and property boom and we are left a poor relation tenants.

Thing is, since day 1 of the stadium being built it was owned by speedway people (The Ochiltrees for most of that time and Sandhu more recently until he was forced out) so even that doesn't stop anything bad happening.

On that note, I would hope that if a new stadium is built that Charles Ochiltrees name is remember in some way.

Surely Ryton area worth exploring, good for motorway connections, A45/M6, just down the road from Brandon, less residential property around, brown field sites..

you only have to look at the fields along the m6 between J1-2 and then think what Somerset achieved, anything is possible with the right people behind it.

Why.

Did he not sell Leicester's,Blackbird Road to Barrett Housing while Speedway racing was still taking place there in 1983,and the promoter Martin Rogers reading about in the local paper

So Leicester can build and burn effigies then but he run Coventry Speedway longer than any other promoter has run a speedway track anywhere else in the UK.

i think the biggest shock for everyone is that we have gone from the stadium up for sale, no news, to a press release saying we have three years left and if you know of a plot of land let us know.....

which implies they haven't been looking at all...

meanwhile more coventry money is spent on buying assets, who are them immediately loaned to Pboro....

we can all read from that what is expected to happen!

I bet until last week Peterborough were buying Jacobs, then following Fridays news the management decided that technically Coventry would buy him to "prove" there is a future. Just a bit of clever PR really. Peterborough asset? Coventry asset? Same thing.

Except it is not Coventry money is it ? It is Mick Hortons money ,and he is a tenant at Brandon. No doubt if the bees go under then Mr Horton will just set up elsewhere. As SCB says it's just PR.

It's been discussed umpteen times on here, but from recollection the Ochiltrees were minor shareholders and it wouldn't have their decision.

True, but Charles knew what was happening with regard to Blackbird Road, yet still allowed Martin Rogers to re-locate to Leicester without warning him that the track was under the hammer. First Rogers knew of it was when a letter informing him dropped on the doormat.

Lets not have any actual facts deny the small element of Leicester supporters who would wish to , their opportunity to gloat , leave them to enjoy their long held misconceptions until the realisation that losing the flagship stadium and club is bad news for all speedway fans, slaps them in the face like a ton of bricks

Read Martin Rogers book. Can't quote directly as I'm at work, but the jist of his views on the matter goes something like- "I don't blame the company for selling Leicester, but I can't forgive the way it was done".

It is very clever of mr sandhu to issue a statement fronted by Mr heaver, Stadium manager. Giving the speedway assurance of at least three years. Will try to secure a new stadium for both motorsports. This is just a front for what actually is going to happen. If people believe what is being said then he will surely pull the wool over everyone's eyes and be laughing the other side of these 3 years. Does anyone actually think that he will finance or help to find a new site? Once he has made a tidy profit on Brandon stadium, if it is redeveloped then there is no obligation to do anything more for the speedway club. The speedway supporters and everyone need to stand firm and fight for THIS stadium. We need to fight to stop planning permission for change of use. Will a new stadium be built? I think not. If they can find land for another stadium then why can't they use that land for housing instead? Because there will be no other piece of land, in the statement it asks for the general public to help find a piece of land, this is just a token gesture to try and smooth this whole situation over. Why should the club move when there is a stadium sitting there purpose built for speedway - Brandon stadium. If planning permission is not granted then development of housing will not happen. it will be a long fight but one worth taking on. Otherwise Brandon is just another on the list of stadiums just pushed aside and re developed. It will not be the last.

Yes this is private land and if the landowner wishes to sale, speedway are just tenants, but the power of fans united together may stop the planning permission being successful. Speedway fans united together.

West ham was sold to the dreaded GRA to fund the refurbishment of brandon stadium. The first thing the GRA did was pull down half of the stadium. The writng was on the wall for that great london venue.

Taken from CET:

Coventry Bees promoter Mick Horton has declared “the hard work starts now” following the news that Brandon Stadium is set to cease as a sporting venue in 2016.

Horton has committed himself to efforts to secure a new venue in the area for motorsport, sentiments shared by outgoing owner Avtar Sandhu who remains heavily involved in the stock car scene.

The immediate closure of the greyhound racing operation, promoted by Harry Findlay, over the weekend sparked speculation that the stadium could be set to close its doors immediately – which would have been disastrous with the new motorsport season only weeks away.

Aside from a packed speedway programme of over 30 meetings, car racing takes place under two different promotions, and this year’s schedule includes the Formula 1 World Final in mid-September.

But Sandhu, while confirming that the stadium is to be sold, has allayed those concerns and says he also wants to be part of a long-term future elsewhere.

Sandhu said: “The Coventry Bees and Brisca F1 stock cars are guaranteed to continue for the next three years regardless as to the ownership of the stadium, and during those three years I will be trying to secure an alternative site for a new stadium in the Coventry area.

“All three sports have become something that I enjoy on a personal level and the respective fans have shown me a great deal of respect over the past 12 years.

"As such I want to ensure we do everything we can to see these sports continue. I am giving my word that I will do everything I can to ensure we succeed.

“In terms of the stadium site itself it will be sold and re-developed - it’s just a question as to when that re-development will take place.

“It will not take place for at least three seasons and that gives us time to find alternative sites for development into our new home.”

Horton is going into his third year as owner and promoter of Coventry Speedway, and having met Sandhu over the weekend he says the news should not cast a shadow over the new season.

Horton said: “Deep down I think everyone knew the stadium was going to be sold eventually, and I’m pleased I managed to extend the lease last year because three years does give us some breathing space.

“Sandhu is a man of his word and he guaranteed that we have those three years, so really the hard work for me starts now in terms of finding a new home.

“I’m 100 per cent committed to that and in many ways the prospect of taking the club into a new venue excites me, although I know with the history of Brandon it will be heart-breaking to leave.

“Three years should be just enough time to make it happen. There are a few options, we want to work on it now and I would also hope with the fan-base we have the local authorities will be supportive.

“But I really don’t want everyone to see this as a negative ahead of the new season. We have two very exciting teams this year, the Bees and the Storm, and we’re all looking forward to seeing them in action.”
