Coventry Stadium Sold

Recommended Posts

How about forget it !

No chance any Middle Englander gonna want noise and disruption every week during the summer months.

As for Sandhu, he asks for contact via e-mail etc, but hey it's Jeremy Heaver who you sending messages too.

Sandhu could not give a monkeys and he paying his "monkey" for taking the flack.

Rip Sandhu !!!

At the moment it's hard to be optimistic. I can't see a suitable site in the area being found quickly. As the football club is looking for a stadium site then it's going to be doubly difficult. Reading Sandhu's words brings little comfort. There were promises made when Reading lost Smallmead and look at the current situation there.

The basic truth of the matter is that speedway has no clout or credibilty in this country. Over recent years it has lost the top flight riders and every season it is embroiled in a row over dirty tricks of some kind. The governing body has letting the sport die from the head down. Years ago the BSPA needed reforming. This is another consequence of the failure to govern strongly and fairly in the interests of the whole sport.

As for the city - no football, no speedway. What's next to go? The council need to wake up to the fact that the optiuons for entertainment in Coventry are going to be either binging in the city centre or a takeaway and telly.

Maybe Mallory Park!!!

Has just been taken over by Stuart Hicken and Eddie Roberts from Real Motorsports and are Speedway fans.

Looking to make full use of the 300 acre estate.

They actually reopen next Saturday March 1st where there will be displays of classic F1 and rally cars, vintage racing backs and speedway machines.

Present on the day will be Tom Sykes - world superbike champion and Tai Woffinden.

Are you always so nasty with any comments to do with Coventry as your last 4 posts have shown I sincerley hope one day all your comments come back to bite you in the A**e and other posters can heap misery on your beloved Poole no one normally likes to see another club and its fans cease to stay open but you seem to revel in other peoples misery :mad:

Not really, but you could have condensed all that into two paragrapghs.

Is the old airfield at Lawford Heath still laying idle if so that could provide the ideal spot .

Perhaps your promotion ought to put out a few feelers then. Because not being nasty, you really need to get out of Brandon, because you will always be looking over your shoulder, and it will always be hanging over you....

Coventry a place that Adolf Hitler tried to destroy 70 years ago and was vilified for it.

The coventry city council have achieved it over the last few years and I pay council tax for them to do it !!!

I am coventry born and bred and proud of its history - but disgusted to be part of its present !

Should not be part of a speedway forum I know, but once Coventry go, then the writing on the wall for 1st class speedway

in the uk is my opinion,

Britain lost its "Great" tag several years ago and such a shame.

When we can pay footballers gbp 300k a week - for pouncing around a football pitch, that says it all.

At least I may be able to still watch speedway in the gp's on TV going forward.

guess I just another sad old 50 year old that does remember the good times. Collins, Mauger, Olsen.

Let me log off now to find my slippers, pipe and horlicks and read this mornings Daily Mail.

I go back to the days of Boocock,Briggs and Fundin but I also remember the good times watching Harris, Hancock, Nicholls and Hamill more recently. It's not that long ago that speedway was a more vibrant sport in the city. From what I hear Coventry has survived the demise of its manufacturing base. There is employment to be found. It's not dead and buried.

A major part of speedway's problem has been the failure of its governers to regard the sport as a whole and to act in its interests - and that includes taking tough action on promotions who play fast and loose with regulations, the failure in youth development and the lack of promotion of the sport at national level. The answers are certainly not to be found in the past. If you keep looking back then you'll never go forward!

And by the way, if you believe too much of the Daily Mail then you'll end up thinking that we won WW2 on our own, that Johnny Foreigner is inherently inferior and that White Dee is more responsible than Fred the Shred for the banking crisis. Great Britain always referred to its size as Greater Britain. Personally, I prefer United Kingdom.

I understand what your saying and i do hear you. But should Coventry go, it will not be the end of british speedway. Your not a sad old 50 year old because i totally agree with you. No footballer is worth £300k a week, thats £1.2 million in four weeks, nice. But does Mr Rooney give a stuff? of course not, they will pay him, he will take it, thank you very much.

But as i said, your promotion need to put feelers out to find another place to finance a stadium, no, it won't be like Brandon, but you won't spend the next umpteen years looking over your shoulder for a man in a suit and bowler hat and a bulldozer. So its for Mr Horton to get his skates on and start looking...

I guess I was anti mick Horton at the start of his coventry regime (like a lot of folk, maybe I got him mixed up with his brother !)

However, with him and his team of Neil, and Blayne et al, would take my hat off to them (if only I wore a hat) for their hard work and enthusiasm in making good times back at coventry speedway (although the team let them down in 2013)

Not a good future for them in coventry, and wouldn't blame them for focusing their efforts in reviving the fortunes at EOS now they got their feet in the door.

Good luck Mick,Neil and Blayne - at least you tried !

There are a number of people on this forum who were in one camp and over the course of the last couple of seasons have posted to say they were wrong.

I haven't seen one single person post about changing their minds the other way.

For a simple snapshot of the general opinion one only has to look at the number of 'likes' my initial post garnered, compared to yours presenting the opposite view.

You yourself were complaining last season about the way the sport is run and some of the events taking place, yet when somebody stood up against it, you lambast them.

So where's the "many, many" you refer to? I think you will find I wasn't presenting the opposite view (although that is my view), I was merely pointing out the one-sidedness in your post and the ridiculing anyone who didn't agree with your "many, many" who happened to like your post (2 people when I just looked at the time of this post!!!!!!).

I can complain at how things are run if that is my opinion but what I do not agree with is the way the two club owners went about it! So you see your argument is fatally flawed because you think there are only two points of view and that your point of view is the right one.

I'm not ridiculing your point of view!

PS It's 2-2 in terms of likes - how is that for your simple snapshot?

If it's been sold for a million pound, & a new site is required, plus a new stadium & track, surely this would cost more. What has Sandhu gained by selling ?

What has Sandhu gained by selling, probably a fair amount. What do Coventry speedway club gain out of it? Next to nothing, because a million will get you knowhere. Then again, Perhaps mr Horton can write to Wayne Rooney, and ask him for a sub, he won't know what to do with 1.2ml every four weeks. He could live on the ruddy interest alone.

Least we have a few years to look ahead. Coventry not first and won't be the last in this mess.

Do you ? it all depends if people want to run Speedway and put money into it with only 3 years left. There is a school of thought that you could be paid money to step out of the way .

All in all a tragic day for Cov and the sport ... and let's face it is going to be very very hard to find another site to run speedway .

I did think the same. The only thing I can think of is Mr Sandhu probably has an overage on the legal documents, which means he could be entitled to an uplift on the selling price, if planning permission is obtained for housing. Perhaps Mr Sandhu is planning to build a 'work in progress' stadium and start with a track in a field and build up facilities. On the other hand it could be 'hot air'. I do hope Mr Sandhu does follow through, so to speak!

He'd gain the very handy option of what to do with that million quid !!

Bees fans would like him to choose to spend it on a new track for their team.

But it's his decision how and where to spend it, not theirs !!

He's asking Bees fans to trust him about finding their team a new home ... and the test of that trust will be when he has that million quid in his hands.

First of all, I hope the name of Coventry Speedway is still at the forefront of the sport in a few years time and beyond :t:

I also hope the missive posted by Neil Watson comes to pass and Coventry have some time at least to secure a new home and can prosper anew :t:

Unfortunately, the information I heard Friday morning suggested only one season is guaranteed at this present time - obviously things can change (and may have) in a short while and I do hope that that it is the case

Good Luck Coventry, the sport needs you :t:

Well said yerropes.

I have many memories of Brandon, some good (giving the Bees some good hidings at home in recent seasons) some bad, (notably the Bees giving the Robins some good hidings in 2007, Ray Wilson beating Martin Ashby in a classic run off in the British final 1975)

Quite frankly, a brilliant place to visit, and without doubt one of the first fixtures pencilled in by many Robins fans when visiting away tracks each year.

Will live long in the memory and a young 16 year old was completely gutted going home that night. Remember the Leicester fans banging on our coach windows in celebration.

Is there a clip out there of this race? Still remember is quite vividly from 39 years ago.
