The White Knight
And here was I feeling that we were all as pure as the driven snow. Next we will be getting lectures on the demon drink. And - heaven forfend - FORNICATION. I think I will make a placard to walk around at Oxford Circus. THE END IS NIGH. I am entitled to my opinion. flagrag
With regards to time delays on tv broadcasts currently there is a 1.8 -4.6 second time delay on Sky sports live sport epending on location if the pictures are sent from the event along BT broadcast fibre links usually 1.4 gig dedicated connection to a main exchange then down to the tower in London then to the broadcaster who uplink to satellite. If the event does not have BT broadcast fibre link it will be uplinked by satellite truck which will make the time delay about 6 seconds depending on encoders used and which orbital position they use for uplink as some are in inclined orbits. For this new betting project neither of these options will be used its far too costly instead the pictures will be sent over a standard Internet connection or a leased line if available and up to standard as far as I am aware this should be fine at the following tracks Coventry,Belle Vue,Poole,Swindon,Birmingham and Wolverhampton all of which have good connections. I expect delays of around 20 seconds as has to travel over Internet to the server it will be hosted on who will then send it to the betting companies Leicester,Lakeside,Kings Lynnand Eastbourne will be the problematic tracks as they will be using 4G and even 3G mobile connections to get the footage to the servers and will add quite a bit of delay as slower connection and also has to travel all the way around the mobile companies infrastructure first before even hitting the Internet so expect 60-90 second delays. The technology being used is different to what is used for greyhounds as most tracks have fixed SIS satellite links or SIS fibre boxes both of which would have less than 10 sec delay. BWitcher
The delay wouldn't cause an issue at all, betting would be closed at the press of a button at the appropriate time at the track, not based upon where the live feed is at. There isn't going to be 'in-running' bets on a particular race!
philfromcov
now we are talking techy this is my subject! the idea that an optical 3G/4G network would delay the service by 60/90 seconds is just not correct. any significant delay, and by that im talking above milliseconds, will be due to the company processing the data, not the delivery at all, so if its going to be a raw stream, and i guess it would and wouldn't expect more than a couple of seconds. as it has been stated this latency would have to be confirmed before any betting agency agreed to it, or as you say we can all get the correct result this time next year we will be millionaires rodney

flagrag
PhilfromCov- When we trialled the LiveU system at Sky we found on average a 64sec delay over a 3G HSPA connection. The delay did drop down when on 4G which should be a lot better this year as will now have access to Vodafone and O2 4G networks.
pugwash
I wasn't. Betting in Speedway as envisaged on here WILL bring further Corruption in to the Sport. What do you mean by FURTHER corruption? For there to be further corruption there must be existing corruption.

There is - and I think you know what I meant. The Fiddling, Conniving and Contrivance of the Results. That, in itself, is a form of corruption. You DID ask. You must be a fan of the chsnge to double point from yhe old tac sub then, seeing as it resultd in far fewer contrived results. And much prefer gps over the old one off finals, as there is a greatly reduced likelihood of collusion or fixed results. This will be sending much lower quality content to be used on smaller screens and computers. The quality is nowhere near as important so the data being sent will be much smaller, thus quicker. SpeedwayTShirts
Just watched tonight's meeting between Wolves and Birmingham on Bet 365, great picture and commentary and didn't cost a penny. Needed to place £5 into account first then withdrew it after the match finished

Picture was very clear and Wolves -6 was a steal
