Brooksy
Well said! Very moving. Brought it all back - what a truly horrendous meeting that was. Good luck to Gary and his family.

teddy2706
It is a good article, but one that left a huge question mark in my mind.

Hodgy
Very interesting and emotional article. The separate piece from Gary on the bonus points pages regarding the concern about NL riders instant elevation into the EL, I totally agree with. Mixing experienced riders with lesser experienced youngsters has dangers that the BSPA haven't given enough thought to. Even if only riding against fellow reserves and second strings it's a jump too soon.
bellevueace
An excellent article and i have to admit i didnt realise the actual severity of his injuries, the seperate article where he speaks about elevating NL riders straight into the EL is spot on. I hope gary gets a position within the sport, i think hes a lot to offer.
teddy2706
That being? Why hasn't any promoter taken advantage of his experience and given him a position on their staff? Someone told me (although I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the statement) that he had indeed been offered a team manager place, but that he had turned it down. This, less than a week before the SS article. Undoubtedly, given suitable facilities, finances and assistance, Gary would be an immense asset to youth training should he choose to accept such a role? Hence the huge question mark in my mind.

Hence the huge question mark in my mind. Garry has possibly (although I don't know) decided to put all his efforts into the GK Racing merchandise/Racing equipment venture, rather than get involved with one club or the youth set up. Who knows, it may be something he can get involved with in the future? Whatever his decisions are, I hope he makes a success out of it. He deserves it after all he's been through, and a top bloke too.

SCB
A really powerful article. Makes you realise what riders families go though quite often. And Garry, if you're reading this, you're not forgotten by the fans.
oldace
Why hasn't any promoter taken advantage of his experience and given him a position on their staff? Without wanting to sound harsh a person in a wheelchair through a racing accident is probably not what a rider wants to see just before he goes out for each race.
StevePark
Without wanting to sound harsh a person in a wheelchair through a racing accident is probably not what a rider wants to see just before he goes out for each race. Newcastle had Joe Owen as manager in 1987. So it wouldn't be the first time it's happened.
oldace
Newcastle had Joe Owen as manager in 1987. So it wouldn't be the first time it's happened. Indeed they did, and Steve Weatherley is also a regular in the pits at Eastbourne. From a riders perspective though, they are trying to put the risk to the back of their mind and the last thing they see before they go out to race is someone paralysed from a racing accident.
Vince
Without wanting to sound harsh a person in a wheelchair through a racing accident is probably not what a rider wants to see just before he goes out for each race. I can't agree with that at all, riders are well aware of the risks but think it's something that happens to other people. The day you start to worry about getting hurt is the day you should give it away. The old saying still holds true: Riders aren't scared of racing they are scared of not racing well.

Yes I agree with that. They are able to push it to the back of their mind or, like you say, dismiss it as something that happens to someone else. However when that risk is right under your nose just before you go out it is a bit harder to dismiss it.
