Speedway Star Toothless Pussycat

Recommended Posts

Can someone who has links to the speedway star please tell me why they never actually report on anything worthwhile?

It seems to me it's not what you know but who you know and they never seem to want to disagree with anyone or anything that might upset certain members of the Scb, Bspa or others within a very tight speedway circle!!

It's the same in general with the letters page as I know various people myself included that have written in over various subjects and issues but they never get published or contacted etc etc.

They will always publish letters though along the lines of "we had nice fish and chips at Rye House in 1987" but never if anyone disagreeing with the partly line!!!

I think they probably have to have a "don't bite the hand that feeds you" approach. It certainly pays to be on good terms with any potential sources of information. I'm enjoying my on line version to be honest. I think if it tried to become a scandal mag. Or something other than what it is, it would probably decline in it's appeal. It might be interesting to read Philip Rising's reaction.

I'll keep it short:-

The last thing Speedway needs is published negativity

But why?98% of those who read the Star will be fans who know basically what goes on.Surely giving them a "worthwhile story" won't do much damage if any to the sport.Of course it might upset some within the sport, but as Phil has said on many occasions the Star aren't quite the darlings of the promoters that some believe. They have had their run ins and threats of bans selling the mag at tracks.I doubt the Star could ever harm speedway as much as tv coverage of poorly attended meetings on tracks that the riders find it hard to stay on their bikes.

That's why it's never in the news... even Speedway Star struggles to fill its pages and resorts to vintage write-ups (best thing in the mag) to fill pages... when it's not acting as a insert for James Easter's travel mag.

Only joking, Mr Raising.

I have written several letters over the years complaining at the lack of passing, poor view and facilities, track state, state of the bogs and burgers, lack of atmosphere ,no proper dress code, cold weather, and admission costs at Blunsdon, none are ever published.

I don't think anyone's asking for a scandal mag, but a bit of in-depth questioning of things like television deals, the SGP arrangements, what Go-Speed do, and so on... The type of thing the press used to do.

In john berrys book he observed that ss used to be quite unafraid to challenge the establishment. However, once mr rising was part ofcthe group which purchased the star and went from being just editor to psrt owner, the star became much less wiling to be out spoken.

Would be interested if phil thinks there is any truth to this.

I agree, Humph.

You don't have to descend to the depths of the gutter press, but equally you don't have to be completely passive in the face of corruption, awful track surfaces, poor treatment of fans, inadequate facilities and more.

Speedway Star used to be (some years ago admittedly)a magazine that wasn't scared to be critical when it was due and I don't see why it can't be again.

In defence of Phil Rising, some of the best articles I have read raising points of concern were written by him.

Another week , another pop at the Speedway Star . Just accept it for what it is , a well published , professional , well written and entertaining magazine . If you want contraversy and negativity , there's always the BSF .

Agree with that Paulco, the staff at the SS do an excellent job in getting a comprehensive speedway news magazine out every week, including all the results from Europe and beyond....

It's not a criticism of the SS and the service they provide, but it would be good for someone to do some in-depth analysis of contentious events such as BV Vs Poole last season
