The Pedaler
Only marginally more than 16 riders and 2 reserves for a very boring individual or testimonial meeting...Surely a TEAM meeting and an international all star team meeting at that will attract a bumper crowd, big sponsorship, television coverage, merchandise sales etc etc that would make it all VERY worthwhile...in anywhere other than a territory ruled over by the BSPA. Then no doubt one of the other clubs will step in and hold the meeting if Poole can't make the figures add up The other clubs are also in BSPA controlled territory. PHILIPRISING
MAYBE not quite that far ... grapevine suggests the meeting (involving four champions from Denmark, GB, Poland and Sweden) might be held in Poland... where else! Lots of discussions and dis-agreements currently taking place.

manchesterpaul
Apologies to those who want to see this competition become a reality but until it is assured that no rider would ride for more than one team i 'pray' daily it doesn't. It can only be very damaging to the sport to have the equivalent of Manchester United and Barcelona swapping players over two legs depending on where the tie is staged or any of the other scenarios that have been proposed. Even if only one club gets to use a rider the fact that he also rides for the opposing team (consisting of only seven riders) will look and be so bad. Also of course we have the very large difference in team strengths prevalent over most ties that's not going to provide any exciting racing. Outsiders will view a Champions league as being the best the sport has to offer however it certainly won't provide four riders battling in close quarters. The Pedaler
MAYBE not quite that far ... grapevine suggests the meeting (involving four champions from Denmark, GB, Poland and Sweden) might be held in Poland... where else! Lots of discussions and dis-agreements currently taking place. The date has been set for 31 August 2014, and the venue will be Zielona Gora. No news yet about participants other than of course the hosts. Three TV stations are apparently competing for the rights to broadcast the event, SkySports NOT included. Would anyone care to speculate whether the BSPA will send the EL Champions to take part? National League reserves in the in a "Champions League" team! Should be interesting. With it being the Poles taking the initiative again no doubt one person in particular will be telling them where they can Shovlar this competition, if the BSPA don't do it for him. I'm assuming that Speedway Star will be providing us with all the updates and information about this tournament so that we won't have to rely on Google's translation of the Sportowefakty site all the time? http://www.sportowefakty.pl/zuzel/417543/trzy-telewizje-chca-pokazac-zuzlowa-lige-mistrzow
SteveLyric2
Whats the betting it will be a 4-team, 4-rider tournament!!? If its to be on 31st August that'll make it a good SGP/Euro Cup weekend!!!!? When this competition was being talked about a couple of years ago, the question of 'who rides for whom' if certain riders represent more than one team, was going to be sorted by initially, 1. rider nationality; 2. Continuous length of club service. So, taking Poole as an example (assuming they will be taking part?) Darcy Ward would ride for Poole and not Piraterna!! Rico
Three TV stations are apparently competing for the rights to broadcast the event, SkySports NOT included. The article is talking in terms of Polish TV coverage, therefore your comment about SkySports isn't relevant.

SteveLyric2
IS that the Poole team of 2013 (Holder, Ward, et al) or 2014? I would think Holder, Ward, Pawlicki, Janowski!! They're all Poole contracted or Poole domiciled!!
Bavarian
Or maybe they invite some guest riders to represent Poole Pirates - who cares - this is how it is done in British speedway anyway

So all confirmed for 31st August at Zielona Gora as a 4-team, 4-rider competition. Poole to represent the BSPA with a team of Ward, Pawlicki, Janowski and 1 other(awaiting approval - likely to be Holder, subject to fitness!!) DutchGrasstrack
That's awesome, first Gorzow SGP and Zielona Gora on the day after. Perfect weekend

This why CL won't work since both Ward and Holder also rides for Piraterna. For Piraterna they only have Greg and Bjarne left as well as two lower string Swedish riders.
