I'm just going to sit back and enjoy it as a Sunday meeting with some good names riding. I won't bother to keep a scorecard because it's meaningless who actually "wins" As long as you have riders plying their trade in different leagues any talk of a "European Champions League" is moot. I've seen all sorts of challenge 4 team tournaments over the years with all sorts of odd ball combinations put together just to get a meeting on and entertain the crowd. The only ironic thing with this one will be if someone starts claiming afterwards that they are European Champions., which I very much doubt. I hope they get a good crowd- I think they will and I hope we get some entertaining speedway. Just out of interest, did Emil ever ride AT Poole when he rode for the Bees (his only UK club)? Regards. Alan.

Few thoughts before tapes go up.

Meeting is well promoted in Polish media, I'm pretty sure 7-10k Zielona Gora supporters will come to watch it.

As much as I hate Falubaz :D , I need to admit that it is probably best run speedway club in the world (from marketing/PR/financial perspective).

In summary, we will probably see some nice speedway event and if they prepare track with some dirt on it, it will be good. Hopefully weather will be kind as it is boring as hell in Zielona Gora when it's slick.

Some ideas for the future? There must be some rules preventing guest apperances. Guests make whole story a bit of a joke but it doesn't have to be like that.

Let's say it is similar format with 5 riders/team. SImple rule that all riders declared for WSL have to ride in minimum 25% of meetings in local leagues would do the trick.

Or maybe 1 guest for each team allowed? Even field and rules the same for everyone.

Any opinions guys?

The FIM - whatever people think of them - are keen to get this tournament established and clearly want all teams to be competitive, presumably why its being made a 4/5 man team tournament!!

If it ever develops to each club hosting one round of it in future years, then maybe it will be full teams, but there could still be the issue of 'shared' riders depending on which clubs qualify?! There was also talk of a couple of other countries entering next year so expect the format to change whatever.

Fair play to Matt Ford. He's still giving this event the big'un. "I've always made it clear this tournament is the Holy Grail for me. This is something special"

Well the Poole team reminds me a bit of that knight who keeps gettng bts lopped off him in the Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie.

No Pawlicki - no problem we'll use his brother

No Holder - no problem we'll use another top quality rider who has no discernible link to the club.

No Ward - no problem we'll use another rider who used to ride for us but we binned.

As long as we call them the Pirates nobody will care.

"What a chance for this beautiful, sleepy little town on the South Coast to become world champons. In 5 or 10 years time, no-one looks at the team line -up's - just the team that won it."

Hats off to the Speedway Star. Apart from the mithering from Ford they have given this ground breaking event the coverage it deserves - diddly squat. Well done!!

I'd like to see some sort of European competition introduced to speedway. Unfortunately because of the way speedway is run with riders competing for teams in up to four or five countries it looks like being very difficult to implement.

Football has the Champions League, an unbelievably lucrative competition, look at the new TV deal signed with BT Sport.

Rugby union has the Heineken Cup, or whatever the new competition is called. Again a very lucrative competition for the teams involved.

In both sports these competitions are seen as a natural stepping stone between domestic leagues and international competitions.

Any competition which brings TV exposure and money into speedway gets my backing. Just needs a bit of well thought through planning.

Remember English football league clubs turned their noses up at the original European Cup back in 1956. Now it's the holy grail.
