The Stags Ride Again!

To be fair, Tom, that's the weak point in my argument.

Its a bit of a long shot, but if there is another Tai in there (or something like) people will be queuing up to see them. If there isn't, they could be a burden to the rest of the league.

My point being HT is that folk like Proud Panther state that due to the weakness of the Scunny team he wont turn up to Mildenhall when they visit

Yet,look through the last two years and this years NL teams--how many of them started out as total rookies at Scunny,??? to take an attitude like his, will only damage his poxy team in the long run,as they need rider who have started somewhere

I will never forget some fool from Dudley saying they wouldnt go watch the saints of 2011---who then completely smoked his team

My advice to anyone is go see these kids race---you might just enjoy it--and your team may just benefit in the next couple of year

I like to think of it as adding to the product on show but I hppe the Scorpion supporters give them the support. My experience is the Scorpion sipporters leave the stadium after the main event which is sad.

The best way to support these youngsters is pay to go in--that way then team will continue---even if you decide to leave!!!

I cannot wait to see the next 3 or 4 Seasons of NL Scunthorpe's development at Monmore Wood! I can see in 2016 ish they will be either Champions or spread around the NL as Second Strings or Heat Leaders or in the PL/EL as has happened in the last 10 years. Well done and good luck to all at Scorpions/Stags/Saints HQ.

I don't think its sad, some of these Sunday afternoon double header meetings go on for over 4 hours with all the track grading.

Montie, my attitude towards British riders is probably better than yours. I have sponsored one rider for the last 4 years, & helped a few others with driving etc. My team is Peterborough,( the clue is in my user name lol ), but I go to a lot of other tracks including Mildenhall. To call them poxy because you dont agree with my opinion, is a bit childish. My honest opinion is that the Saints team should be in the MDL, but thats all it is, my opinion.

This completly is missing the point of the STAGS.

The MDL and NJL have lots of riders riding in them but where do they go from here!!! nowhere as too many teams in the NL are more bothered about splashing the cash on established riders

The stags are the next step up giving these riders a chance to progress onto the next level.

Lets go through the team

1. Steve jones - no point riding below NL level as he has shown to be high standard at this level ad will be a match for most riders in this league

2. Ryan MacDonald - Spent the last couple of years riding in the NJL as one of the best riders so surely now is the time to be given a chance. Lack of northern NL teams means he is travelling along way to take this chance

3. Reece downs - Old enough to now ride NL and already has the youth 500 under his belt last year finishing just behind Nathan greaves who holds his own in the NL so surely is ready to ride especially at reserve (also clocks the EWR at sub 60 seconds which is heat winning level at NL level)

4. Arron Mogridge - Would cost him a fortune to ride in the MDL or NJL. would probably have jumped at the chance to ride in the SDL.......................oh wait there isnt one (there is the AJL but dont seem to have anywhere near as many meetings as the more northern leagues). Has shown all winter that he can battle with the likes of Oliver greenwood, max clegg, Nathan Greaves so a full spread of NL level riders so again surely good eough

well thats 4/7 that should comfortably hold thier own and should have a place at any team in the league but i bet only 1 had multiple offers

So that leaves 3 raw rookies

5. Liam Sanderson - Been on a bike less than a year but developing fast. Will also be riding in the NJL ad MDL as the likes of Dany phillips and Max clegg have which is the intermediate stage riding in both. Beat Adam extance in a round of the winter amateur series who is riding for buxton so will not be miles off other riders in the league to start with

6 & 7 the 2 raw rookies. These are probably the only 2 at the start of the season that will be slightly off the pace but again the rate of progression will be quick and likely they will also look for team places in the MDL ad NJL. Its all about meetings and track time for them.

So on reflection yes they will likely lose meetings to start with but we are not aiming to win the league but they will be a team determined to improve and give 100% and will be a completely different prospect both at home and late in the season

As i said earlier not all teams should go down the STAGS route butmore needs to be done to get these riders into the NL from the NJL otherwise whats the point of the league you just end up with a bunch of riders travelling around racing for free losing money with nowhere to progress to.......so then what happens....................they quit the sport

Maybe a draft should be done similar to the EL where you build your top end 5 to a limit then each team has to draft 2 riders from the junior leagues who did not race regularly at NL the season before at reserve

Rant over cant wait for 2 weeks to watch them race for first time and hopefully surprise alot of people especially those moaning who probably know nothing about half the riders

Over the last couple of years the Heathens have been putting 60 + points on the board pretty regularly. It's not done too much harm to their crowds, has it ?

The Stags will only be making a single visit to the other tracks this year, so I think the negative posts are a bit OTT.

Scunthorpe are doing this right, there can be no doubt about it and any argument saying that they should build a stronger side so that other club's gates don't suffer when they are in town is incredibly flimsy.

Scunthorpe have proven by developing lots of raw riders into PL standard or higher over the last few seasons that they are on the right track. I hope the Stags cause a few shocks this season and make people sit up and take notice. I've not seen any of the young riders in this side so far race except Mogridge, however I would not be surprised to see at least one or two in the Premier League in 2015/6 if Scunthorpe's track record is anything to go by.

I'd say you are right, which is the one reason all meetings are doubled up.

It'll depend on just how competitive they are.

If they are very weak, proud panther has a point. There's every possibility that people will overlook the development side and see them as nothing but an MDL team in the NL, unable to provide entertainment or value for money.

This completly is missing the point of the STAGS.

The MDL and NJL have lots of riders riding in them but where do they go from here!!! nowhere as too many teams in the NL are more bothered about splashing the cash on established riders

Established riders ?

The two teams that have been criticised here are Dudley & Mildenhall. I'd say Dudley have two riders who might be seen as established, Mildenhall have one. As do Scunthorpe.

It is ridiculous to even hint that Scunthorpe have a monopoly on developing riders because quite clearly they don't.

Over the last couple of years the Heathens have been putting 60 + points on the board pretty regularly. It's not done too much harm to their crowds, has it ?

The Stags will only be making a single visit to the other tracks this year, so I think the negative posts are a bit OTT.

Ask Rob Godfrey what happened to his gates when his CL team were humping teams week in, week out.

I also think there's a great deal of difference between hammering competitive opposition and hammering a team of rookies.

As I say, it depends just how good they are. There's no question that attractive opposition pull in bigger gates than those who are unattractive. If they are very weak, there's every chance people simply will not go.

It all comes down to the eternal question of "stand alones" and "second teams" co-existing in this league.

You just cannot please all of the people all of the time.

Richard Hollingsworth quoted in today's SStar;

"Discussions are still taking place. We had an agreement with a pair of riders 6 weeks ago but sadly things changed last week and now we are having to explore our options."

...

"We are in discussion with a couple and hopefully we can sort out our line-up for our opening fixture by the weekend."

Thanks for that don't see much of the star in winter due to lack of outlets in Scunthorpe selling them.

Second part of my post might be right then turn up to the meeting and see who they are!

They'll have 7 by Sunday. I'm sure they have 7 now infact. The last 2 will be unveiled on Thursday to co-inside with the Speedway Star no doubt.

I hope we have 7 otherwise my team picture will look a bit odd like just like the scorpions one if ryan doesnt get here by sunday!!

Scunthorpe must have a Tesco or ask your local news agent to order it.
