The Pedaler
Does anyone still use the "09066" telephone information services these days? If so, why, and what benefit did you get from it? If not, why not? If you did in the past and have stopped, what caused the change in heart?
KEITH M
I stopped using it when it went to £1:50 a minute and my wife caught me..... Oh hang on that was 0898
AndyJ
I've never used it nor, in this internet age with widespread social media usage ideal for spreading any messages that such a service might offer, would I ever consider paying for a premium rate call. If not, why not? If you did in the past and have stopped, what caused the change in heart? Interesting - what's the speedway link? The "09066" number used to be the Speedway Club Call, which was an information line (when clubs could be bothered to update it) concerning the individual clubs (each club had their own number). Has to be at least 20 years since used such a number, maybe more and that would have been the results line.
Vincent Vega
Bryn used to do the Hammer Line and the London Speedway Hotline which were the 0898 numbers maybe he may know.
Guest
Interesting - what's the speedway link? some of the people who reply on here with no sense of humour are big t*ts I was quite serious with my query about the phone number and have no idea what is for. Keith M - is that really a serious description of yourself? Or were you being offensive to me? The "09066" number used to be the Speedway Club Call, which was an information line (when clubs could be bothered to update it) concerning the individual clubs (each club had their own number). Thank you very much for a serious response. Bryn used to do the Hammer Line and the London Speedway Hotline which were the 0898 numbers maybe he may know. Also many thanks for a worthwhile explanation. It does make sense to me - I remember now that the late Ernie Hancock used to be involved in something like this? Mike.Butler
during the 80's i used to ring the results line from 10.00 (from work on evening shift)...i always wonder what response I would get from replying to ads in progs of that era....for instance who now occupies the old Speedway Star office in Cuffley? SteveLyric2
The late Tony Millard was mainly responsible for introducing them across many sports, local radio and newspapers etc. They were a decent revenue earner for clubs and the other organisations that used them (and Tony Millard's company!!) but have been mainly overtaken by social media - Except if you are entering a competition on a TV programme!!!!!!! Ben91
The growth of the internet, especially mobile internet, rendered these redundant really as their main use was people calling to check if meetings were on or not. Where you had to call to find out if meetings where on before you set out in dodgy weather you can just check online now and do so again en route from your mobile if the conditions aren't clearing. Vincent Vega
They also used to drag the call out as long as possible to get more money from you. Bryn used to cough a lot probably after puffing on his fag in between giving the individual scores out!!!
A ORLOV
They also used to drag the call out as long as possible to get more money from you. Bryn used to cough a lot probably after puffing on his fag in between giving the individual scores out!!! Was that because the club supplied Bryn with fags to drag the call out. Only joking Bryn Edited January 7, 2014 by A ORLOV
RobMcCaffery
They also used to drag the call out as long as possible to get more money from you. Certainly not with any I operated - always aimed to get the info out fast, headlines to get the main points out then a longer, in-depth call for those who wanted to stick around for more. . To me it was all about informing the customers. Better to have plenty of repeat short calls than one long call and a customer feeling ripped-off. Needless to say I wasn't that popular with those in charge but what's new there? Edited January 7, 2014 by rmc

Bryn used to cough a lot probably after puffing on his fag in between giving the individual scores out!!! Definitely. You were charged so much a minute and had to listen to Peter York rabbiting on about how you've called the Speedway Hotline, which I already knew. I timed his introduction once. It was one minute and one second long. So you'd already paid for one minute before they even started to give any information.
The Pedaler
The growth of the internet, especially mobile internet, rendered these redundant In that case why do speedway clubs and the BSPA still continue with these premium rate phone numbers instead of developing mobile friendly web sites or even Apps for iPhones and Android? Guest
In that case why do speedway clubs and the BSPA still continue with these premium rate phone numbers instead of developing mobile friendly web sites or even Apps for iPhones and Android? Perhaps because there are people who do not have internet facilities, possibly just a phone or an old-style pay-as-you-go mobile?
The Pedaler
Perhaps because there are people who do not have internet facilities, possibly just a phone or an old-style pay-as-you-go mobile? And that is a reason to NOT provide APPS to those who do? Maybe if speedway gets a new deal on television, it should be in the old square screen format, and in black and white only, just to appease those who don't have internet facilities, as they probably don't have HD/3D widescreen TV's either?
