Will There Be Swedish Speedway On Uk Tv? - Possible Bad Sign?

Recommended Posts

i dont know if it will be on British Eurosport but i cant see why not. All the racing they show on British eurosport with bikes they show on Eurosport. The only thing is at weekends with WSBK or BSB they show live on British eurosport but on Eurosport they show it normaly on a Sun or mon. They sometimes show the WSBK live. I hope they do show Swedish league on British Eurosport even tho i get Eurosport i will always support British Eurosport. With also Moto GP going to BT then British Eurosport have lost that so they might show the speedway.

However the rights are separate-Europe(previously Orange Sport.pl) and UK (previously Premier Sports) If Eurosport had purchased both surely they would have trumpeted the fact that British viewers will be able to watch the coverage.

Have any of you actually asked Eurosport about the matter?

Taken from the GoSpeed website

'Formed in the year 2000 the Polish Extraliga is arguably now the toughest speedway league in the World and certainly the most popular in terms of live audiences. The fervour in which fans support their teams is a sight to behold with speedway being the most popular sport in the country. GSI hold the International Media rights for this league and are looking to propel this property onto the world stage over the next few years.'

Is this last bit just rubbish? Do they just buy rights to stop others showing it?

Basically - YES!

Let's face it, the Russell's (i.e. GoSport) had a product to protect - EL coverage on SkySports. They were too scared that "their" product would appear too inferior if they went out with Polish speedway on a Sunday and EL on the Monday. A bit like World of Sport's wrestling with Mick McManus & Big Daddy was made to look very silly by WWF wrestling being shown on Sky.

I guess this also depends on how the rights agreement is set up, Perhaps some original rights holder might have it put into the contract that

the buyer needs to broadcast a certain amount of meetings for the agreement to be valid.

I THINK you will find that Sky, for one, weren't interested in showing Polish speedway - or any speedway come to that - on a Sunday afternoon or evening. And, of course, they would have had to add an English commentary, etc.

A real problem with these 'international feeds' is that you get a heck of a lot of static long-shots from cameras while the host broadcaster features interviews and analysis by the presenters in their own language. Dave Goddard did a remarkable job for Premier Sports in trying to fill these gaps but it is a real problem for the more professional broadcasters such as BT or Sky.

Perhaps if either carried Swedish or Polish Speedway their budget could stretch to proper studio coverage and use that instead of a guy talking over unchanging pictures, often for several minutes? There's only so much you can fill with highlights of the previous week's match as Premier did.

On the other hand the action's so well worth watching. With Sweden running at 6 pm on Tuesdays perhaps an edited programme showing all the races but cutting out the gaps later in the evening would work better, but then you have to have an editing budget. A one hour slot for 15 races would do fine.

Either way I do hope to see the Swedish racing but then I do prefer their more technical tracks than the Polish full-throttle ones. Perhaps it's also a case of happy memories of speedway in the forests too?

Like you I really hope Swedish speedway is not lost to our screens-I`m hoping it`s good news that Premier are not showing it in 2014,as I`m sure they would have carried on-so I can only think someone has outbid them-Could Darren Fletcher have put in a good word for Speedway with his BT bosses ? Much prefer live coverage personally, and I always enjoy the streamed N sport(Poland) and C more Swedish coverage.I have always been happy to subscribe to the companies who have paid for the rights-SKY,Premier,Speedway TV. However with the quality of the streams so good these days I`m sure we would be able to find a Swedish stream ok-one streamer now has 55 channels available-and is actually showing 55 different live sporting events today. I've emailed both Tony Olsson (Svemo) and Cmore.

Tony replied that he didn't know and that the rights were owned by a different company.

C-more haven't replied yet. I would guess that Svemo sold the rights to company X who then re-sells the rights

for the international market to any company that is interested, So I think that we'll just have to wait and see.

Thank you so much for what you have done-just had a quick look at the line-ups and think title will definitely be between Piraterna and Vetlanda with obviously Smederna not too far behind !!

Nice defence of GoSpeed there. The thing is, by GoSpeed acquiring the rights, NOBODY else could show Polish Speedway. That was always the intention. Stifle the opposition. Hide the better product from public view. Preserve the illusion that British is best. PROTECT THE RUSSELL'S COMMISSION EARNINGS. That bit about Sky not being interested is nothing more than a smoke screen.

  • 3 weeks later...

Has anyone heard rumours of the faint possibility of Eurosport taking up the broadcasting of the Swedish League, at least for UK viewers? I only ask because a couple of us have written to Premier Sports and i think i've also seen them quote on the internet somewhere when queried on the Swedish coverage that "It appears that Euro Sport will cover the Speedway as from this year and moving forward." Key word being what speedway 'the' refers to.

All this said despite the fact that he went to the extent of streaming live coverage of the Polish Playoffs in 2013. If he really didn't want it shown why would he do that? The FACT is that no broadcaster has been interested in the Sunday afternoon slot. Once again, please don't allow facts to get in the way of your hatred of all things Russell

Will sadly not be back with #premiersports for #speedway this season, #thanksforwatching everyone.

Here is another tweet from Dave that confirms that Premier sports will not show any speedway this season:

Thanks for sharing that-we are still no nearer finding out who has purchased the uk rights(if anyone) If it`s British Eurosport why didn`t they announce it at the same time as European Eurosport.(presumably they have announced they have taken the rights off (Orange sport.pl)

if members of the public want to see Swedish speedway why dont they buy a motorized dish and watch the Swedish as well as Polish speedway for about £16 a month. That way you can watch all the best action live. Im shocked that British Eurosport wont show the Swedish Speedway but for £16 a month if people want to watch it then buy a motorized dish.
