Joe Jacobs And Pl

Recommended Posts

With all the talk of young Brits getting a fairer crack of the whip in 2014 with opportunities at reserve in EL, I just wonder how many promoters of PL would be interested in JJ who has come on in leaps and bounds in the last 2 years especially. He completed the whole of last season in NL at no 1 at Coventry, and held the track record. I have always sung this lads praises because he has the right approach to Speedway, and a more amiable and likeable rider you could not wish to meet. And I know that he desperately wants to secure a PL place for next year. Promoters please take note - you won't go far wrong signing Joe!

JJ was awful at Ashfield last year other than 2 decent matches in April. Couldn't seem to bridge the gap between NL and PL. He did seem to do well on the bigger tracks so Sheffield may suit him better. Would be very surprised to see him back at Glasgow, the fans are owed a decent home team and JJ wouldn't fit that. No issues with his attitude, we appreciate he travelled much further than his own doorstep unlike some British youngsters.

Bit harsh in my opinion.

Joe started off doing the job that was expected, but like always, a young rider pops out has the ride of his life and beats an opposing teams heat leader, and from there on in Glasgow fans expect him to be doing it every week.

Ps

6+3 against Ipswich in August

5+3 against Plymouth in September

10+2 against Somerset in August

8+3 against Berwick in June

7+1 against Workington in June

5+1 against Leicester in May

5 against Scunthorpe in May

8+1 against Newcastle in May

I don't know what you deem a decent performance for a young rider starting on a 3 point average, but it looks to me that he had many more than the 2 in April you stated.

If I was a PL promoter, I would be very keen to sign a couple of these riders that are riding EL. Joe Jacobs, for example, may find it tough going for Wolves but he is going to learn so much that it must be a certainty that he will add significantly to his PL average.

or it may knock there confidence that much they are lost to the sport before they reach anywhere near there potential

To be fair JJ has never been given the opportunities like one or two others over the years and that goes for a lot of these lads. Those who can remember JJ at 15, will remember how undeveloped his body was. The lad looked about 12, body weight was no more than about 6.5 stone if that and rode a bike especially adjusted for him. So was he a Lambert-no his lack of body development wouldn't have been possible! At 16 he was runner up in the British U18s and beat the likes of Howarth and Garrity and unlike the other four in that final JJ has had to wait a further 3 years to get that opportunity. I for one am glad to see these lads finally get given an opportunity. I hope JJ and other young lads go on and improve each year as we need a future if speedway is to survive.

To be fair, I think from reading some of the comments, some people have perhaps not followed Joes career to date. He has made improvement with every season, and he is 20 years old - hardly over the hill!!! To make comparisons to Lambert is ludicrous - how many Robert Lamberts do you know aged 15?

Trust me, there is much more to come yet from Joe and I just got a feeling that 2014 could be his breakthrough year.
